Forschung Research
Das Forschungsprojekt will «Stoffwechsel»
Aldo Rossi
Innerhalb des Seminars Architekturtheorie ss 2007 «Aldo
Rossi – Poetischer Rationalismus» wurde Rossis theoretisches
und architektonisches Werk einer erneuten Betrachtung
unterzogen. Einen wichtigen Aspekt bildete
Rossis bisher kaum dokumentierte, jedoch folgenreiche
Freizeit Freiheit.
Themes of Central European Architectural Theory
Whereas Viennese modernity has been thoroughly analyzed
in the context of architectural history, comparable
analyses of the architecture of our more easterly
neighbors have been largely neglected. The interaction
between individual centers and trends, and their
aesthetic positions and social programs, are the focal
points of this research.
Material Transformation – Between Art and Natural Science
Gottfried Semper made the concept of Stoffwechsel
a cornerstone of his theory of style. Stoffwechsel (literally,
‘material transference’) originally signified biological
metabolism, but Semper used the term to describe the
process whereby forms developed using one material
are transferred to another, for example, textile to brick,
or wood to stone. The research defines ‘Stoffwechsel’
in a wider context, using the term to describe interdisciplinary
exchanges between art, science and architecture.
Aldo Rossi
In the Theory of Architecture Seminar in ss 2007 entitled
‘Aldo Rossi – Poetical Realism’, Rossi’s theoretical
and architectural work was subjected to new scrutiny. An
important aspect was Rossi’s – until now – little documented
teaching activity at eth Zurich. Starting with a
more profound investigation of the circumstances
and consequences of his performance, we examine Rossi’s
impact as a teacher and as a source of inspiration for
contemporary Swiss architecture. A publication is planned
for Summer, 2009.
The Formation of Theory
The field of architectural knowledge is in constant motion
due to rapid transformations in culture and society;
in particular, new forms of pictorial or iconic knowledge
are constantly entering this framework. ‘TheorieBau’
is the title of a project, which examines selected aspects
of the architectural episteme, of its emergence and
its transformations. Following the first symposium Precisions
– Architecture between Sciences and Arts, the
series will be continued with a workshop on Experiments
this fall.
Leisure and Freedom. Escape from the Commonplace in the
Architecture of Eastern and Western Europe 1960–1980
In Europe’s politically charged atmosphere of the 60s
and 70s, leisure time offered the chance to be free.
A conference on 8th/9th November 2007 at eth Zurich
looked at the development of architectural and urban
construction of spaces in which the ‘free time’ of those
years was spent, with particular emphasis, beyond
political and ideological barriers, on the sway and correlation
between East and West.
