Prof. Dr. Andreas Tönnesmann Vorsteher 151 In the fourth decade of its existence, the gta still firmly holds to its dual goals – conducting research into the historical and theoretical aspects of architecture at the highest level of scholarship, and presenting the results of such research in a consistently fresh way for debate in today’s world. History and theory – the combination implies both the subject itself and its scholarly discussion. Recording and securing facts, identifying and interpreting source materials, are concerns for us just as much as transmitting the corresponding knowledge through undergraduate teaching, and the support and encouragement of younger scholars. Wherever teaching and research are conducted at the gta, this dual orientation is present and enriches the work of the Institute, which is interdisciplinary in the best sense. The history of art and architecture, the history of urban planning, and architectural theory – these core subjects at the gta are in no sense restricted to their traditional fields of research interest, but are placed in the context of the productive range and variety of today’s architecture, which shapes the department’s range of activities in general. The same applies to the divisions responsible for the Archives, Exhibitions and Publishers, as well as to the post-graduate curriculum, which represent indispensable supplements to, and platforms for, the Institute’s scholarly and scientific work. The gta has long since achieved international recognition through its special approach – a humanities-oriented institute within a department of architecture – and through the implications it derives from this context for its everyday work.
