Der herannahende Süden The Approaching South
Das Wasser im Überfluss einerseits und der Mangel daran
andererseits bildet eine Metapher für bevorstehende
Zeiten und den Ausdruck für zu überwindende Schwierigkeiten.
Der Akt des Bauens gründet daher eher im
Überleben als im wirtschaftlich spekulativen Anspruch.
Es galt, Rückschlüsse aus Beispielen vergangener
Kulturen zu ziehen – vom Orient bis zum Okzident, ohne
in die übliche Rhetorik von Romantik oder Neo-Traditionalismus
zu verfallen. Das Projekt verlangte nach der
Umsetzung eines kleinen Wasser-Forschungsinstituts mit
angegliederter Wohnnutzung und öffentlicher Nutzung.
Das Ziel lag darin, bewusst die Möglichkeiten auszuloten,
einen erkennbaren und nutzbaren öffentlichen
Raum zu schaffen. Dies auf einem Bauplatz, der von
verfallenen Strukturen geprägt ist, die von einer früheren
intensiven Industrietätigkeit zeugen.

The abundance of water on the one hand, and the lack of
it on the other, played as a metaphor for times to come –
it served as an expression of the difficulties to overcome –
throughout Europe at least – and addressed the viability
of construction as ‘survival’ rather than as commodity.
Drawing from examples of past cultures – from
the Orient to the Occident – without using the rhetoric
common to romanticism or the neo-vernacular, the
project called for the implementation of a small water
research institute with associated houses and public
functions.
The aim was to draw attention to the possibility of
creating a recognisable and usable public space, with
the lean tools of the program, on a site that hosted a
number of remaining derelict structures in evidence
of its previous, intensive industrial life.
