On the Swiss Federal Railway’s parcel at the corner of the
Langstrasse and Zollstrasse in Zurich, students were
asked to design a cinema complex and a building with
various galleries, an art hall, as well as a bistro and
bookshop. The focus was directed upon spaces that were
bright and spaces that could be darkened, furnished
and empty spaces, opulent and sober spaces, night use
and day use, the building’s presence by night and by
day, and the spaces’ perceptibility seen from cars and trains
and as seen by pedestrians; but primarily the orientation
and movement of visitors inside and outside the building.
The spaces to be designed – the cinema spaces and the
gallery spaces – serve perception themselves: the exhibition
spaces serve the perception of works of art, while
the cinema spaces serve the perception of films.
