Strömung wie die des New Urbanism, in «Old Europe»
normalerweise kein Thema des architektonischen
Diskurses, wird unvoreingenommen und unabhängig
von stilistischen Vorlieben betrachtet und beurteilt.
Schliesslich wird versucht, aus den untersuchten Beispielen
Konstanten und Gemeinsamkeiten zu isolieren,
die jenseits von funktionalen und technischen Fragen zum
Wohnkomfort einer Siedlung beitragen. Das Ziel
von Midcomfort bleibt dabei, einfache und im besten
Fall kostenneutrale Anregungen zu formulieren, wie
in der architektonischen Praxis eine Verbesserung der
Wohnqualität zu erreichen wäre.

Anonymität im architektonischen wie im sozialen

wenn es unscheinbar sein mag und ohne «Denkmalwert»,
sind Faktoren, die als Ergebnisse unserer Analyse von
«funktionierenden» Orten formuliert wurden und die zugleich
als Prüfkriterien auf einige neuere Arbeiten angewandt
wurden. So stellt das Heft auch Projekte vor,
etwa die in der Schweiz kaum beachtete Stadterweiterung
«De Grienden» des holländischen Architektenteams «biq».
Zum ersten Mal enthält «Midcomfort» No. 3 auch
Texte verschiedener Autoren: Von Miroslav Sik und Petra
Röthlisberger stammen die Texte «Wie man Ensembles
baut» beziehungsweise eine Studie über Sitzbänke, die
wir in ihrer Funktion als Teil des öffentlichen Raums und
damit des Siedlungsbaus betrachten.

earlier under conditions that were in some respects similar.
In this case, we have focused not on the intentions
behind the respective designs but on how these housing
developments are today and the relationship the residents
have with them. This, we hoped, would give us information
about whether the urban design concept in question
has withstood the test of time and reality. Even an
urban design movement such as New Urbanism, which
normally not does not feature in architectural debate
in old Europe, is viewed and judged without bias and
independently of stylistic preference.
Finally, we attempt to isolate constants and commonalities
from the examples considered that, beyond
functional and technical considerations, contribute to
the living comfort of a housing development. Midcomfort’s
aim remains to formulate simple and, in a bestcase
scenario, cost-neutral ideas about how better living
quality might be achieved in architectural practice.

Avoidance of uniformity, monotony or anonymity in
the architectural and social sense, elevating the atmosphere,
permitting a certain degree of stylistic and spatial
diversity, paying attention to the relationship between
harmony and contrast, and the conservation and integration
of existing buildings, even if they may seem
nondescript and without any ‘value as a historic monument’:
these are some of the factors that we identified
as the results of our analysis of ‘places that work’ and that
we also applied as benchmarks to a number of more
recent works. This brochure therefore also presents more
recent projects, such as ‘De Grienden’, a town extension
by the Dutch team of architects ‘biq’ that has received
very little attention in Switzerland.
For the first time, this third edition of ‘Midcomfort’
includes texts by different authors: ‘How to build
ensembles’ was authored by Miroslav Sik and Petra
Röthlisberger is responsible for a study of benches,
in which we examine their function as a component of
the public realm and therefore, of housing developments.
