first studies on psychotherapy with videophone are promising. But all studies open up
many more questions: Which groups of patients are suitable for a screen-to-screen
therapy? Which personality factors are conducive to both the therapist and the patient?
Where are the limits of psychotherapy with videophone? For whom does that therapy
work? Is a patient still willing after an unsuccessful screen-to-screen treatment to use a
conventional presence therapy treatment? The research of psychotherapy is being
confronted with a rapidly expanding medium which has just started and which extends
the communication possibilities. The Internet and its possibilities is an exciting, new
and promising opportunity to expand the psychotherapeutic care.
Today, I look back on half a year of intensive work with the subject of psychotherapy
with videophone. I was supported by the rapid and non-bureaucratic assistance of
Stephan Bouchard, Thomas Berger and Horst Mitmansgruber which led my intensive
research to competent colleagues and interlocutors around the world. I want to thank
especially for their willingness to have spoken with me and for their interviews. With
their experience, ideas, their attitudes and values they contributed significantly to the
success of this work. I personally must admit that meeting all these experts, either in
person, by mail or via Skype has been a great enrichment in my life. New goals in my
life have opened up.
