Report <strong>of</strong> the second International Conference<br />

on International Business in Chennai/India<br />

The MSc in International Business under<br />

the EU-India cross cultural Programme is<br />

a Southbank <strong>University</strong> London Project run<br />

jointly with Loyola College, Chennai, India<br />

and <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Applied</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>Mainz</strong>,<br />

Germany. On this behalf, the Second Conference<br />

took place from 7 th to 8 th <strong>of</strong> September<br />

2001 in Chennai.<br />

Loyola College Chennai was founded in 1924<br />

by the Loyola College Society to train young<br />

men an women <strong>of</strong> quality to be leaders in al<br />

ways <strong>of</strong> life. Loyola became an autonomous<br />

College in 1978. It has 6.000 students and<br />

more than 15 major departments <strong>of</strong>fering<br />

courses in science, humanities, arts, business<br />

and languages. The College is accredited<br />

as a five Star Institution by the National<br />

Accredited Committee.<br />

Southbank <strong>University</strong> in London was founded<br />

over 100 years ago to foster vocational<br />

training in the Southwark area <strong>of</strong> London.<br />

The Southbank Business School nowadays<br />

provides expertise in wide range <strong>of</strong> disciplines<br />

such as Management, Finance and<br />

Accounting, Law etc.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Applied</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> (<strong>Fachhochschule</strong>)<br />

<strong>Mainz</strong> was established 1976<br />

and provides a high quality pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

teaching and training in three faculties:<br />

Architecture, Design and Business Administration.<br />

The Business School has more than<br />

2.000 students.<br />

Conference themes were related to the Cross<br />

Cultural Management with the current perspectives<br />

and the future prospects. Therefore,<br />

the topics were<br />

- learning styles across cultures,<br />

- Culture and Communications,<br />

- Training for cross cultural programmes,<br />

- international Human Resources Management.<br />

The Conference objectives were<br />

- to produce high quality research resulting<br />

in a number <strong>of</strong> academic papers being<br />

presented at this international conference<br />

and seminar<br />

- to organise a conference which will bring<br />

together course participants as well as<br />

representatives from the EU commission,<br />

the Indian government, the India-German<br />

Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce, academics and the<br />

business community.<br />

The conference started on Friday the 7 th<br />

with the venue and welcome by the principal<br />

Fr. Joseph Xavier S.J. <strong>of</strong> Loyola College;<br />

the organisation and all the preparation for<br />

the conference were done by Dr. Joseph Jayaraj<br />

– the audience was<br />

impressed by his exact<br />

and very well work.<br />

They thanked him very<br />

much for his commitment.<br />

Papers were presented<br />

by Winston Prandziok,<br />

Principal Lecturer at<br />

Southbank <strong>University</strong><br />

to the topic <strong>of</strong> international education; his<br />

college Beate Wengler was Chairperson.<br />

Participants from <strong>Mainz</strong> were Pr<strong>of</strong>. Dr. Scharnbacher,<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Dr. Schüle, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Dr. Reich,<br />

Helen Bicknell M.A. and Dipl. Betriebswirtin<br />

(FH) Sabine Klebig M.A. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Schüle presented<br />

a paper to international relations especially<br />

the connections <strong>of</strong> India and Germany.<br />

Helen Bicknell and Sabine Klebig drew a comparsion<br />

<strong>of</strong> the different education systems<br />

in Great Britain and Germany. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Scharnbacher<br />

talked about international market<br />

research and was Chairperson. The german<br />

delegation had the chance, to get some<br />

impressions <strong>of</strong> the Indian business world<br />

when visiting some joint venture companies<br />

and the Chennai Harbour.<br />

From Loyola, the practical part was involved;<br />

there was a presentation from the Commissioner<br />

<strong>of</strong> Customs to international custom<br />

regulations; from Lintas Marketing to International<br />

Marketing Strategies.<br />

The conference was terminated on Saturday<br />

the 8 th in the British embassy were the<br />

participants had the chance to thank Dr.<br />

Jayaraj again for his excellent organisation.<br />
