Innovative companies and especially start-ups, as potential drivers of
economic growth and regional development are the focus of interest for
science and politics. A number of impressive examples of extremely
successful providers of innovative products as well as the development of
power zones such as Silicon Valley trigger great expectations for such high
tech region: an improvement of the employment situation and the overall
competitiveness of the region. However, one fundamental precondition for
attracting drivers of innovation (and their success) is to secure financing for
such enterprises. In order to reduce funding gaps, Venture Capital
companies function as financial intermediaries, mostly in young and
innovative companies with substantial growth potential. The seminar covers
topics to research the relation between venture Capital and economic value
adding within regions. Furthermore, location factors which determine the
distribution of Venture Capital backed companies are discussed in detail. At
the beginning of the semester a list of subjects can be found on the
homepage. Each topic shall be assigned to one student. All presentations
in the seminar are based on specific publications. Those presenting should
introduce the question or issue, bring it in line with the state of research,
explain the method applied and carry out a critical appraisal of the findings.
The presenters are expected to use secondary literature. Each subject
shall be assigned to one student. Every topic will be discussed in class.
Subject-related competences:
The students are able to understand the theory of Venture Capital finance
from a geographical perspective. By analysing location patterns of venture
capital investment they can identify the uneven geographical distribution of
risk capital investments which arises from the combination of the clustering
in a relatively small number of cities, and the localised nature of Venture
Capital investing. The students are able to interpret these findings in a
regional economic context.
Methodological competences:
The students are able to recognise connections between regional
economic prosperity and sufficient supply of funding capital. Furthermore,
they can evaluate and calculate regional value adding. Additionally, the
students are able to develop presentation and communication skills by
