The seminar will cover topics in International Trade and Regional
Integration. The aim is to give the students an overview of a broad range of
topics currently discussed in both academia and policy circles. Since each
student will write a seminar paper and hold a presentation on one of the
topics, they will also require an in-depth knowledge of their chosen topic.
Among the topics discussed in this course are questions such as: Why did
international trade contract so much during the recent recession? Does the
European Union’s trade policy harm developing countries? What are the
implications of the recent spread of regional trade agreements for the world
trading system? Please see the course outline for the full list of topics.
Participating students get an overview of current topics in international
trade and regional integration. They gain an in-depth understanding of the
topic of their individual seminar paper and presentation. More generally, the
preparation of the seminar paper will involve surveying the relevant
literature, and to collect, evaluate and interpret the information relevant for
the chosen topic. A key element of this evaluation and interpretation is the
application of knowledge and skills acquired in the prerequisite courses to
the topic of choice. This allows students to broaden their general
knowledge of economics, and to train their ability to deepen their
knowledge independently. The presentation of the seminar paper, and the
related discussion and debate, further improve the students‘
communication and presentation skills. It also provides an opportunity to
formulate and defend the position and approach to problem solving
embodied in their written work.
