Why do some regions become vital centers of entrepreneurial activity while
others languish? The importance of entrepreneurship as a factor in the
creation of both individual and regional wealth has recently generated
considerable interest. Successful regions were not transformed overnight
just due to a single breakthrough idea. The transformation has often been
possible only because a blend of intangibles – novel ideas, enterprising
individuals, networks, a culture of risk taking – have come together with
tangibles such as seed capital to produce transformative business ideas.
The seminar covers topics to research exactly these soft and hard factors
which determine the specific intensity of business start-ups among regions.
The seminar is organized as a block seminar. At the beginning of the
semester a list of topics can be found on the homepage. Each topic shall
be assigned to one student. All presentations in the seminar are based on
specific publications. Those presenting should introduce the question or
issue, bring it in line with the state of research, explain the method applied
and carry out a critical appraisal of the findings. The presenters are
expected to use secondary literature. Each subject shall be assigned to
one student. Every topic will be discussed in class.
Subject-related competences:
The students are able to understand different aspects of entrepreneurship
from a regional perspective. As the seminar also addresses central factors
in regional economic development, the students comprehend
entrepreneurial vitality and innovation as local and regional phenomena.
Methodological competences:
The students are able to analyse to which extent regional peculiarities and
disparities influence new business formation processes. Furthermore, the
students are able to evaluate entrepreneurial success, employment affects
of new firms, the importance of social capital and the network structures as
well as entrepreneurial education provided in the regions.
Additionally, the students are able to develop presentation and
communication skills by leading a conversation in class after presenting
their results.
Presentation in class (15%), seminar paper (85%), Consistent attendance
and active participation in class
