The seminar gives an overview of theoretical and empirical research
related to economics of innovation and new technology. The aim of the
seminar is to introduce students to research published in top journals in this
field. The topics covered include incentives to innovate and returns to
innovation, organization and management of innovation, intellectual
property rights, knowledge spillovers, diffusion of new technology, financing
of innovation, technological change and growth, and related policy issues.
Students have learnt to read, understand and interpret specialized literature
published in top academic journals, to summarize key issues and to
critically evaluate the contributions. They have learnt to communicate
academic research in presentations and written summaries, as well as
provide comments and questions to other authors’ work. They developed a
critical understanding of some of the theories and empirical methods in
economic research on innovation and the skills to apply this knowledge to
new questions. They acquired knowledge of the English terminology in
economics, in particular the terminology related to empirical research, and
improved their communication skills.
