Press-Release (Media-Info) After more than 20 years in Istanbul first congress for endoscopy and radiology in Cyprus (Nicosia) A German-Turkish doctor will open his first medical congress in Nicosia (Cyprus) with brand new topics such as Endobarrier for the obese, operations using natural body orifices, treatment of tumours during a gastro / coloscopy and other themes. The expansion of the congress initiative in the field of medicine had already begun towards the end of the nineties. At that time, the organiser of the German-Turkish Gastroenterological Congress in Istanbul, Dr. Deniz Uyak, established the Central Asian Congress Initiative (MAKI). In addition to this, 10 speakers from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan attended the 13 th German Turkish Gastro-intestinal Congress in Istanbul (2-day congress with supporting programme sponsored by Dr. Falk Pharma [Freiburg]). Apart from that, the Wilhelmshaven doctor (with Turkish roots) studied medicine in Istanbul together with Dr. Dervis Eroglu, the President of the Republic of North Cyprus. This is why Dr. Eroglu will be giving the opening speech of the congress. Dr. Uyak is supported by the management of the "Near East University Hospital” in matters of accommodation, transport and rooms for the congress. In addition, the topics of the Cyprus Congress are very modern even by German standards. They include the treatment of obesity (gastric balloon, Endobarrier), the endoscopic treatment of malignant tumours during a coloscopy or gastroscopy (Mucosektomie) and the endoscopic treatment using body orifices (NOTES). In the diagnostic field, there will be a lecture on the use of Magnetic Resonance Tomography (MRT) for stomach – intestine examinations and the ultra sonic examination using a contrast medium (particularly suitable in cases of liver cancer). "The congress topics complement those of our annual German – Turkish Gastroenterological Congress in Istanbul," mentioning Dr. Uyak. Speakers at the 1 st German Turkish-Cypriot Medical Congress in Nicosia (North Cyprus) will be PD Dr. Dirk Wilhelm from Munich, Prof. Dr. Georg Kähler from Mannheim, Dr. Stefan Schmidt from Ulm, Dr. Matthias Lang from Weinheim and Dr. Deniz Uyak from Wilhelmshaven. The Congress in Nicosia is financed by various sponsors (Acendis Trading, Kurt & Kurt, Pentax) who are spending several thousand Euros on advanced scientific training in the field of diagnostic and treatment. Accommodation (guesthouse), transport (Airport- shuttle), and sightseeing (Nicosia, Girne and the surrounding countryside) is organised by the Near East University (Nicosia). 45
