The President of the Technion, Professor
Peretz Lavie, opens the symposium and
welcomes everybody to the talks – the
lecture hall is fully filled. Then Professor
Amit Meller (both Technion) and
Professor Claus Scheidereit (MDC) give
their encouraging words to open this
symposium and so foster further the
collaboration between our institutes.

Professor Clemens Schmitt (MDC/
Charité) gives a talk on metabolic
targeting of senescent cancer cells.
He came with us to Haifa just for this
half-a-day and has to leave immediately
after his talk for another meeting. But
even during this short visit he manages
to exchange some words and ideas
with Professor Batsheva Kerem from
the Hebrew University, and invite her
for a visit to Berlin to discuss joint
projects. To me it proves how excited

and dedicated the scientists behind
this project are, and how important it
is to meet in person, even for a brief
moment.

Professor Aaron Ciechanover gives a talk
as usual, so passionate and intense,
conveying his latest unpublished results.
The room is full and it is quite hot, but
everybody follows Prof. Ciechanover’s
every word. Technion prides itself on
its three Nobel Prize winners (Aaron
Ciechanover and Avram Hershko got it
for Chemistry in 2004), and it was only
a few months ago that another Technion
researcher, Professor Dan Shechtmann,
was awarded this most prestigious prize.
It must be in the air here!

During the break, I get a chance to
talk to Professor Ciechanover about his
forthcoming visit to Berlin. He has just
been awarded the Humboldt Research
Award upon the MDC’s nomination.
He plans to come to Berlin more often
throughout the year, and will be
going on a lecture tour to a few other
German institutes and universities. Prof.
Ciechanover is very enthusiastic and says
he looks forward to coming to Berlin in
April, when our team is going to present
the joint PhD program’s proposal to the
Helmholtz Association funding panel.
Then a student approaches me,
asking about our International PhD
programme. She is going to apply to the
currently opened call for applications.
This, I feel, is a good sign for our plans
for the joint PhD programme!
