The plane has finally taken off.
The captain tells us we are getting
breakfast as soon as the plane reaches
its designated height – I am starting to
feel hungry, so this is good news. Well,

In January, a group of MDC scientists met with colleagues
from the Hebrew University and the Technion
– Israel Institute of Technology, in Haifa. On January
25-27, the third joint scientific symposium “Frontiers in
Cell Signaling and Gene Regulation: From Single Cells to
Networks“, took place. The two previous German-Israeli
symposia were held in 2009 at the Weizmann Institute
of Science and in 2010 at the MDC.

at 6:00 am. I am not an early bird
(although after the birth of my two
daughters, I am learning to be one),
and a cup of coffee in Frankfurt, where
we had to change planes, was certainly
welcome!
It feels a bit like an adventure – we
are travelling to Haifa in Israel to meet
colleagues from the Technion – Israel
Institute of Technology and Hebrew
University of Jerusalem. Professor Claus
Scheidereit, Professor Walter Birchmeier
and Professor Clemens Schmitt, the
junior group leaders Dr. Alexander
Loewer and Dr. Oliver Rocks, the PhD
students Julia Schulz, Ekaterina Perets,
Julian Heuberger and Daniel Heinze,
and I are attending the third joint
scientific symposium between the MDC
and our Israeli partners. We are also on
a mission to work out the fine details
of a proposal for a joint German-
Israeli PhD program between the MDC,
Humboldt University, Charité – Universitätsmedizin
Berlin and two of Israel’s
oldest and finest universities, the
Hebrew University and the Technion.
