<strong>Gender</strong> Health Report Switzerland 7<br />
Health reports constitute a central basis for the planning of measures aimed at improving<br />
public health. In recent decades, it has emerged that health chances are unequally distributed<br />
among the population. Women and men have different life expectancies and<br />
mortality rates for instance; they are affected by diseases to different extents and thus<br />
display differing health profiles. Furthermore, they differ in their use of the health system<br />
and display differences in terms of health-relevant behaviour, so that we can also assume<br />
differing prevention potentials. Biological, social and societal factors influencing<br />
health and disease also differ between the genders, and these must also be taken into<br />
account in planning health-related measures.<br />
<strong>Gender</strong> mainstreaming is now a central strategy, which is intended to contribute to both<br />
equal health opportunities for men and women and to quality enhancements in health<br />
provisions for both genders. The <strong>Gender</strong> Health Report is written in line with the health<br />
targets 8 published by the Swiss Society for Public Health:<br />
