THE POWER OF IMAGINATION.
Tailor-made solutions achieved
through multifunctionality
The darmstadtium science and congress centre offers
numerous possibilities for combining and figuring its various
rooms to exactly suit your own particular event .
❙ The “Spectrum” congress hall with a maximum capacity of
1,677 seats can be divided into two or three smaller halls;
elevating platforms in the seating areas allow the hall to be
transformed quickly from a smooth dance floor into an
ascending auditorium.
❙ The surrounding foyer areas can be used in a multitude of
ways, e.g. for exhibitions accompanying the main events.
❙ The 18 conference rooms can be combined flexibly and offer
seating for a total of up to 1,300 persons.
Wissenschaftskonferenz Falling Walls in Berlin forsch − symbolträchtig
November
Die „Winds of change“ wehen
auch deshalb der Veranstaltungswirtschaft
und dem German Convention
Bureau kräftig um die Nase.
Sie wirbeln hier Staub auf, erfrischen
dort Denken und Haltung.
Das kann dem deutschen Meetingwesen
nur gut tun, das seine welt-
und europaweite Spitzenstellung halten
will. Da kommt der junge GCB-
Geschäftsführer Matthias Schultze
gerade recht. Er genießt das Vertrauen
der Branche, die ihm manchen
Durchbruch zutraut. Ob es um valide
Marktdaten, eine Kompetenzfeldstrategie
oder Netzwerke in den
wichtigsten Branchen geht – Wandel
verlangt auch Geduld und Beharrungsvermögen.
Das Motto muss
jetzt lauten: Durchhalten, bis die
nächsten Mauern fallen!
Walls fall, demands grow
n “What scientific breakthroughs lie
ahead of us?” perkily asks the
scientific conference “Falling Walls” in
Berlin. It will be held on the heavily
symbolic anniversary on 9 November
2011 of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In
this way the organisers connect with
the exhilarating atmosphere 22 years
ago, recalling the emotions then of
almost unlimited confidence and
awakening. Chancellor Angela Merkel
and President Christian Wulff gave the
event their highest political blessings.
Many people similarly wish for the
highest political backing and a new
breakthrough in the struggle against
climate change. Without sacrifice and
loss this change will not come about.
This is what weather presenter at the
ZDF TV network Gunther Tiersch
reminds us of, which is why he is
engaged on the experts’ committee of
“green meetings and events conference”.
The committee helps win the
necessary acceptance in the industry
EDITORIAL
for sustainability standards. The media
professional knows though, that “the
demands on the transmission of
knowledge have risen intensely in the
last few years and they will become
increasingly stronger.”
The “winds of change” are blowing
strongly for the event industry and the
German Convention Bureau. They stir
up dust in some places, freshen up
ideas and attitudes in others. This can
only be good for the German meetings
industry, if it wants to remain at the
top among destinations in the world
and in Europe. The young GCB
Managing Director Matthias Schultze
is just the person the industry needs.
He enjoys the trust of the industry,
which is confident he can achieve
breakthroughs. Whether valid market
data, a competence field strategy or
networks in the most important
industries – change requires patience
and determination. The motto now has
to be: Persevere, till the next walls fall!
Made
in Jena.“ 2009 präsentiert sich Oldenburg
als „Übermorgen-Stadt“. Nach einem Jahr
Wettbewerbs-Pause soll 2011 nun Mainz
ähnlich positive Effekte verbuchen. Der
Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft,
der den Wettbewerb für 2011 zum
sechsten Mal ausgerichtet hat, verleiht
den Titel exklusiv für ein Jahr. Er ist mit
einem Preisgeld von 250.000 Euro dotiert.
Eine vergleichende Studie über die Wettbewerbsteilnehmer
kommt zu dem Ergeb-
nis, dass vor allem Städte mittlerer Größe
profitieren, die sich mithilfe ihrer Teilnahme
als „Wissensstadt neu aufstellen
wollen“. Die Arbeit von Professor Stefanie
Hohn, Fachhochschule Osnabrück, hebt
insbesondere auf die positiven Effekte der
Netzwerkbildung ab. Stefanie Hohn analysiert:
„Viele Netzwerke zwischen Wissenschaft,
Wirtschaft, Stadt und Kultur,
die im Zuge der Bewerbung erst etabliert
wurden oder deren Arbeit sich intensiviert
hat, sind danach dauerhaft im städtischen
Umfeld verankert.“
Diese netzwerke können dann für die
gemeinsame Einwerbung von Kongressen
ebenso genutzt werden wie für eine koordinierte
Beantragung von Fördermitteln
für andere stadtweite Projekte. Professor
Georg Krausch, Präsident der Universität
Mainz und Sprecher der Mainzer Wissenschaftsallianz,
verspricht sich reichen Ertrag
aus 2011 für Mainz: „Wir wollen das
Wissen, das in den Mainzer Hochschulen
und Wissenschaftseinrichtungen generiert
wird, zum Nutzen der Stadt und der
Bevölkerung in die Wissenspraxis überführen
– im Sinne einer nachhaltigen,
wissensbasierten Stadtentwicklung.“ Die
rheinland-pfälzische Bildungsministerin
Doris Ahnen ergänzt: „Der Titel ,Stadt
der Wissenschaft‘ spiegelt in idealer Weise
die Dynamik wider, die seit einiger Zeit
in der Mainzer Wissenschafts- und Forschungslandschaft
herrscht.“ Sie bezieht
sich damit auf Neugründungen von Forschungsinstituten
wie dem Institut für
Molekulare Biologie, dem Helmholtz-In-
zum Ziel setzte. Welche Erkenntnisse
daraus nun in Mainz eine Rolle
spielen, wird in der „Stadt der Wissenschaft
Build the knowledge city
GCB GERMAnY
Knowledge-based economic development is catching on.
municipalities are actively triggering the domino effect
of networks building, conferences and growth.
n Breakthroughs. Knowledge, its exchange and dissemination at conferences
are the fuel for future innovations and economic development. This principle proved
itself in the “Science Cities”: in 2008 Jena presented itself and its Science Year
under the banner of “Knowledge and Growth. Made in Jena”, in 2009 Oldenburg
followed suit and chose as its motto “The City of Tomorrow”.
After a pause of one year in the competition Mainz wants to chalk up similar
positive effects in 2011. The Association of German Science, which is holding the
competition for the sixth time in 2011, lends the title exclusively for a year. It comes
with 250,000 Euros in prize money. A comparative study of the participants in the
competition has come to the conclusion that cities of medium size profit most from
the contest; by taking part in the competition they “reposition themselves as
knowledge cities”.
The study authored by Professor Stefanie Hohn, Osnabrück Technical College,
emphasises especially the positive effects of building networks. As she explains,
“many networks between science, business, the city and culture, which were first
established or whose work was intensified during the course of the bid, have
afterwards become permanently anchored in the urban structure.”
These networks can then be used for a joint bid for congresses just as much
as for a coordinated application for funding for other city-wide projects. Professor
Georg Krausch, President of Mainz University and spokesman for the Mainz Alliance
of Science, believes 2011 will bring a rich harvest for Mainz: “We want to transfer
the knowledge that is generated in Mainz’ colleges, university and science institutes
into scientific practice, in order to benefit the city and its inhabitants, in the form of
a sustainable, knowledge-based urban development. “ The Minister for Education of
Rhineland-Palatinate, Doris Ahnen, adds that “the title ‘City of Science’ reflects in an
ideal manner the dynamic character that abounds in Mainz’ science and research
landscape.” She points out the foundation of new research institutes, such as the
Institute for Molecular Biology, the Helmholtz Institute or the Centre for Transnational
Oncology.
The exciting programme of the city-wide action year includes the second “Green
Meetings & Events Conference” on 1 and 2 March 2011 in the Congress Centrum
Mainz (CCM). The event is organised by the German Convention Bureau (GCB) and
the European Association of Event Centres (EVVC). The conference’s premiere was
in 2009 at the World Conference Center Bonn. It produced a working group with the
goal of establishing a unified certificate for sustainability in the conference industry.
Which results from this process will now play a role in Mainz are eagerly expected in
the “City of Science 2011”.
Thanks to a science summer 2003 Mainz already has amassed experience
in city-wide cooperation and network building. A “Long Night of Science“ was
already on the programme at that time. Similar events in 2001 in other German
cities will stimulate curiosity among a broad public for top-level research in a
stimulating event arrangement – and possibly be harbingers of future “Cities of
Science”.
Build the knowledge city
The Science Summer in Chemnitz between 1 and 8 July is one of these events. Due
to a lack of waterways Chemnitz however will have to do without the “MS Science”,
the 200 metre long exhibition ship from the “Science in Dialogue” initiative funded
by the German Federal Ministry for Research. It will instead dock in Rostock and
there function as the display window for Chemnitz’s Science Summer. Bielefeld will
hold its Science Summer from 26 August to 4 September. Over 400 events at
approximately 50 venues will be presented by Bielefeld Marketing GmbH in
cooperation with six Bielefeld colleges and over 40 further cultural and leisure
institutions under the banner “INGENIOUS - Get Clever”.
On 28 May Magdeburg will switch on the spotlights for its sixth, “Long Night of
Science” focussed on health in its laboratories and in the backrooms of research.
Also on 28 May Potsdam and Berlin will focus the spots at an early hour on local
scientists and their achievements. After more than ten years the “Long Night of
Science” has become an established highlight in the event calendar of the capital
and its surroundings. After the lights and colours of summer have faded away in the
German capital researchers at the event centre “Radialsystem V” will look into the
future. On 9 November 2011 they will demonstrate “which walls will fall next” at the
former pump station directly on the Spree river. The “Falling Walls Conference” will
convene an expected more than 600 participants from 60 countries. On this
historically significant date in German history – also the anniversary of the fall of the
Berlin Wall in 1989 – leading international researchers will introduce in 15 minute
presentations the “coming scientific breakthroughs”.
Chancellor Angela Merkel probably attend again. Her government has fixed as a
matter of priority the goal of ensuring the conditions for further top achievements
from researchers with three support programmes. They include the “Excellence
Initiative”, the “College and University Pact 2020” and the “Pact for Research and
Innovation”. When the public and politicians are ready to help local researchers to
new breakthroughs with recognition and support, then they can result in economic
impulses just as much as in completely new cities of knowledge.
Ähnliche Veranstaltungen werden
2011 auch in anderen deutschen Städten
bei einem breiten Publikum die Neugierde
auf Spitzen-Forschung in einer anregenden
Event-Kulisse wecken – und vielleicht
Vorboten sein von künftigen „Städten
Dazu gehört der Wissenschaftssommer
Zwar muss Chemnitz mangels Gewässer
vor Ort auf die „MS Wissenschaft“ verzichten.
9. November 2011 im ehemaligen Berliner
„welche Mauern als nächste fallen“.
So versammelt die „Falling Walls Conference“
voraussichtlich mehr als 600
Teilnehmer aus 60 Ländern. An dem
für Deutschland geschichtsträchtigen
Datum – 1989 fiel an diesem Tag die
Berliner Mauer – stellen internationale
Spitzenforscher in jeweils 15 Minuten
„kommende wissenschaftliche Durchbrüche“
vor.
Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel
dürfte ebenfalls wieder dabei sein. Ihre
Regierung zielt vorrangig mit drei Förderprogrammen
darauf ab, in Deutschland
die Bedingungen für weitere Spitzenleistungen
der Forscher zu sichern:
Dazu gehören die „Exzellenzinitiative“,
der „Hochschulpakt 2020“ und der
„Pakt für Forschung und Innovation“.
Wenn Öffentlichkeit und Politik bereit
sind, den Forschern vor Ort mittels entsprechender
Anerkennung und Förderung
zu neuen Durchbrüchen zu verhelfen,
können daraus ebenso Wirtschaftsimpulse
entstehen wie ganze neue Wissensstädte.
Veranstaltern erforderlich“
gunther Tiersch: Ich bin Meteorologe geworden,
weil mich das Wetter schon als
Kind und Jugendlicher fasziniert hat. Die
Emotionen, z.B. beim Betrachten einer Gewitterwolke,
weckten bei mir die Neugier,
zu verstehen, was in einer solchen Wolke
wirklich passiert, welche Energien freigesetzt
werden.
Der Klimawandel ist für mich zunächst
eher abstrakt.
jede gesellschaftliche gruppe definiert
werden. Wie?
Nachhaltigkeit ist ein schönes Wort und
kann in der praktischen Umsetzung sehr
teuer werden. Eine Gesellschaft muss bereit
sein diese Kosten zu tragen. Aber sind wir
dazu bereit?
Nachhaltigkeit
bei Konferenzen fängt schon beim einzelnen
potentiellen Teilnehmer an: ist die
Teilnahme unbedingt erforderlich? Der persönliche
Fußabdruck lässt sich bei einer
Teilnahme einigermaßen klein halten, zum
Beispiel wenn öffentliche Verkehrsmittel,
möglichst die Bahn, benutzt werden.
“Courage is also necessary
from organisers”
Gunther tiersch, zdF weather presenter, calls on us to
change our consumer behaviour at conferences and criticises
co 2 consumption as only comforting consciences.
n CIM: Dr. Tiersch, do the changes in the climate caused by humans
raise your emotions?
gunther Tiersch: I became a meteorologist because the weather fascinated me as a
child and adolescent. The emotions triggered by watching a storm cloud stimulated my
curiosity to know what really occurred in such a cloud, what energies were set free. For me
the climate change is first of all abstract. I do not experience it directly. But because of my
knowledge of the meteorological and climatic conditions on earth it is clear to me that the
climate change exists. The emotions come into play when I research the worldwide effects
and realise how higher temperatures will influence our lives in the future. And these effects
will be on the whole damaging for civilisation.
How would you make it clear to conference organisers that we
have to stop the climate change here too in Central Europe?
10 cim 1/2011 Germany
The climate change will be controllable in Germany. We are still a
wealthy nation that can handle the negative consequences. Still, we will
have to make sacrifices. Pressure will be massive, however, from the
outside: Other states in the world will remain less stable, insecurities
are spreading, and due to the effects of the climate change many
countries will become ungovernable. This will also influence us to a
great degree. How we should we be able to deal with the high number
of climate refugees when today we are not ready to accept a few
hundred thousand from abroad?
you say that sustainability has to be defined
for each social group. How?
Sustainability is a beautiful word but can be very expensive in its
practical implementation. A society has to be willing to assume these
costs. But are we willing to do this? I am of the opinion that we have to
start small, and get accustomed to the fact that our daily life cannot be
had so cheaply. Consumption yes, but not with throw-away products.
When we think of the coming generations, who also have the right to
live as well as we do, then we have to change our consumer behaviour.
This applies to events and conferences too.
Where do you see as the essential starting points for a concept
towards sustainable international large congresses?
Events and conferences satisfy our need for communication,
information and recognition. Sustainability at conferences already
starts with individual potential participants: Is their participation
absolutely necessary? The personal carbon footprint can be relatively
limited as regards participation when, for example, public transport is
used, best of all the train. A call to participants to consume energy in
a more responsible manner during an event is a small step towards
sustainability. But this also requires the courage of organisers. There
are hotels that have a favourable CO 2 balance. Organisers too can
show their commitment. They can ensure a tight programme, so that
the event is as short as possible. This entails speakers who talk and
explain well.
What do you think of contributions equivalent to the
CO 2 emissions caused by travelling to a conference?
Financial CO 2 compensation primarily serves to comfort bad consciences
and to provide the organiser with the obligatory environmental
image. There are projects that are useful and worthy of being supported.
But you should inform yourself carefully of where the money
is going.
If you had to make political decisions related to the
climate change – what would they be?
GERMAnY GCB
Auch ein Appell an die Teilnehmer verantwortlich
mit Energie während der Veranstaltung
umzugehen, ist ein kleiner Schritt zur
Nachhaltigkeit.
Was halten Sie von Spenden entsprechend
dem durch die Anreise verursachten
CO 2 -Ausstoß?
Ein finanzieller CO 2 -Ausgleich beruhigt in
erster Linie das schlechte Gewissen und
gibt dem Veranstalter das nötige Umweltimage.
Es gibt Projekte, die sinnvoll und unterstützungswürdig
sind. Aber man sollte
sich informieren, wohin das Geld fließt.
Wenn Sie politische Entscheidungen
in Bezug auf Klimawandel treffen
müssten – welche wären das?
Energie müsste bei uns teurer werden, mit
entsprechender Unterstützung sozial
Schwacher.
teil. Spreche ich die Veranstalter auf Konzepte
zur Nachhaltigkeit an, treffe ich immer
auf offene Ohren: Das Thema Nachhaltigkeit
ist angekommen.
Wie würden Sie denn dem typischen
TV-Publikum, das Ihnen allabendlich
vor den Bildschirmen zusieht, den
“Courage is also necessary from organisers”
Energy should be more expensive in Germany, with the corresponding
support for the weaker. The transformation of the energy industry
requires a different kind of political culture. Stronger involvement of
citizens, but also a clear change of course in favour of renewable
Es müssten fesselnde Vorträge sein, mit charismatischen
Wir brauchen Menschen, die gut vermitteln
können, denn wir leben in Zeiten
der schnelllebigen Unterhaltung, die wir sofort
wechseln können, wenn es uns nicht
mehr gefällt. Die Ansprüche an die Vermittlung
stark gestiegen und sie werden immer größer
energies. We do not have a lot of time left! We cannot prevent
the climate change, but we still can limit its effects.
What is your experience with measures for
sustainability at conferences?
I take part in many different events as a speaker. When I talk
to the organisers about concepts for sustainability I always
find them very receptive. The issue of sustainability is in.
How would you explain to your typical TV audience
the climate change at a conference?
They would have to be riveting talks, with charismatic speakers
who are seldom heard. But we still have to work on that. We
need people who can transmit well, since we live in times of
short-lived entertainment, which we can switch off immediately.
The demands on the transmission of knowledge have risen
intensely in the last few years and they will become increasingly
stronger. Controversial opinions should also be argued,
speakers should be chosen according to this criteria. FW
GCB-Pressesprecherin Ute Stegmann.
Der Schulterschluss der Branche ist
popular platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Xing and
LinkedIn.
The german meetings industry will have two
opportunities in its own country to prove its strengths
face-to-face in 2011. From 13 to 15 February 2011 the
CCD Congress Center Düsseldorf will be the venue of the
“European Meetings and Events Conference” (EMEC),
organised by the association Meeting Professionals
International. Between 22 and 26 October 2011 Leipzig will
hold the 50th World Congress of the ICCA. The annual ICCA
congress gathers together leading providers with international
conference organisers and industry experts from over 50
countries and all the continents. Leipzig was able to win out
over Dubai/Abu Dhabi and Pittsburgh USA in an arduous
bidding process. When it became necessary, the German
national meetings industry, with help from the GCB, closed
ranks and presented itself firmly behind the Saxon
exhibition city. An important role in the bidding process was
played by the use of testimonials, supplied by among others
the German Convention Bureau. “It was important to us that
the bid came from all of Germany,” emphasises GCB
spokeswoman Ute Stegmann.
The solidarity of the industry can likewise be observed at
annual meetings fairs or customer networking events on site
such as the “London Bierfest”. After its successful customer
events in the Mercedes Benz World near London and in
Wembley Stadium the GCB will import the hearty Oktoberfest
atmosphere, bringing not just dates and facts but also
emotional sales arguments to the British metropolis.
Two new international formats in the USA will challenge all
of the GCB’s organisational experience. The AIBTM from 21
to 23 June 2011 in Baltimore and the IMEX America
between 11 and 13 October 2011 in Las Vegas. Back home
in Frankfurt the German stand at the 2010 IMEX in Frankfurt
drew 190 exhibitors. For the 2011 edition of the meetings
fair scheduled between 24 and 26 May 2011 a small
increase is expected. “I think we will break through the
magic limit of 200 exhibitors this year,” emphasises Ute
Stegmann. The strong innovation power of German providers
will also be featured at the IMEX. Schultze regards them as
“foremost in the areas of green meetings and sustainability.
The high standards that Germany has to offer in this field
are a tangible sales argument that – as our studies
demonstrate – will carry more weight in the future,” states
Schultze. Frank Wewoda
„Strategische neuausrichtung“
Matthias Schultze: Durch meine berufliche
Daher
ist die Kommunikation und Informati-
“Strategic realignment“
matthias Schultze is setting a new course for the German convention bureau: the young
executive seeks a dialogue with politicians and wants to collect valid data on the market.
n CIM: Mr. Schultze, what surprised you most in your first
year at the gCB?
Matthias Schultze: Thanks to my professional activity and of course
as Vice President of EVVC I have been connected with the industry and
also with the GCB for a long time. I thus knew beforehand exactly what
to expect – accepted this new task gladly because of this reason. What
was completely new for me was working solely with women. A very
positive experience of course.
you want to strengthen the political perception of the
german meeting industry – how exactly?
One of the fundamental tasks of the GCB as the umbrella organisation
of the meeting and conference industry is to defend the interests of the
industry before the political authorities and to increase the political
onspolitik gegenüber politischen Gremien,
Ausschüssen und anderer Organe ein wichtiger
Pfeiler unserer strategischen Neuausrichtung.
Hier ist zuallererst der EVVC, der
Europäische Verband der Veranstaltungs-
Centren e.V., zu nennen. Aber auch mit weiteren
Verbänden wie der ICCA, International
Congress and Convention Association,
MPI, Meeting Professionals International,
und der Vereinigung Deutscher Veranstaltungsorganisatoren
e.V. werden wir in Zukunft
stärker zusammenarbeiten.
Ganz konkret werden wir gemeinsam mit
dem EVVC am 13. April 2011 im Rahmen
einer Anhörung im deutschen Bundestag
die Belange der deutschen Tagungs- und
Kongresswirtschaft darlegen.
Partnerverbänden in Berlin.
Green Meetings, Social Me-
dia, Meeting Architecture etc. immer stärker
nach außen in Erscheinung treten. Die
Organisation der Konferenz „greenmeetings
und events“ in Zusammenarbeit mit dem
EVVC vom 1. bis 2. März 2011 in Mainz ist
hier ein wichtiger Schritt.
Was führen Sie fort an Projekten Ihrer
Vorgänger, was werden Sie entschieden
anders machen?
Drei
Schwerpunkte bilden die Grundlagen aller
Aktivitäten: Das GCB soll Impulsgeber für
perception of the industry. For this reason communication and
information policy via-à-vis political boards, committees and other
organs represents an important pillar of our strategic realignment. At
the top of the list is the EVVC, the European Association of Event
Centres. We will likewise work together more intensely with other
associations too, such as ICCA (International Congress and Convention
Association), Meeting Professionals International and the Association of
German Event Organisers (veranstaltungsplaner.de).
To be specific, on 13 April 2011 we will present together with the EVVC
the needs of the German meetings and conference industry during a
hearing at the German Parliament. The issues are the competitiveness
as well as the general conditions of the industry. To promote the
dialogue with politicians we are planning an information event in Berlin
scheduled for June 2012 together with our partner associations. In
wichtigen Branchen Netzwerke zu etablieren
und Plattformen zu schaffen, die das Interesse
an Deutschland als Veranstaltungsort
erhöhen.
Welche Haltung nimmt das gCB unter
Ihnen zu „grünen“ Standardisierungs-
Aktivitäten wie green globe, ISO und
regionalen Zertifikaten ein?
addition, we will increasingly make our presence felt externally in the
future by acting as initiators of issues such as green meetings, social
media, meeting architecture, etc. The organisation of the conference
“greenmeetings and events” in cooperation with the EVVC in Mainz
between 1 and 2 March 2011 is a crucial first step.
Which of your predecessor’s projects will you continue,
which ones will you change decisively?
Our strategic realignment is built on the successes of my predecessors
and of the entire GCB team. We will go a step further, in order to remain
fit for the future, to ensure the competitiveness of the association of the
Germany meeting and conference industry in the long term, as well as to
expand its leading position among the internationally active convention
bureaus. Our focus is on the structure of the organisation, on finances,
but also on our products and services. Three focal points form the basis
of all our activities: the GCB should be an initiator for the industry,
collecting valid market data, and making available the GCB’s staff.
Moreover we want to develop a strategy of fields of competences, with
the goal of establishing and creating networks and platforms in the key
industries, which will stimulate interest in Germany as an event location.
Standardisierungen sind wichtige Mittel,
damit alle an einem Strang ziehen. Nur so
kann Deutschland auch im Bereich Green
Meetings führend bleiben. Zurzeit sind unterschiedliche
Zertifizierungen im Umlauf
mit unterschiedlichen Zielen und Aussagen.
Diese Vielfalt kann für Anbieter und Kunden
verwirrend sein. Ich sehe es als Aufgabe
der Verbände an, hier Aufklärungsarbeit zu
leisten und ihre Mitglieder zu informieren,
damit diese qualifizierte Entscheidungen
treffen können, welches Zertifikat für ihre
Situation das passende ist.
Matthias Schultze has been the new managing
Was setzen Sie an mittel- und langfristigen
Innovationsthemen. Gut vernetzt in
allen wichtigen Branchen und mit einer soliden
entsprechender Wahrnehmung im politischen
What is your and the gCB’s position on “green” standardisation
activities such as green globe, ISO and regional
certificates?
Standardisation is a key means so that we all pull together in the same
direction. This is the only way that Germany can remain a leader in the
area of green meetings, too. At present various certifications are being
used, each with different goals and meanings. This variety could be
confusing for providers and customers. I see it as the duty of the
associations to provide information and inform their members, so that
they can make qualified decisions on which certificate is the most
suitable for their situation.
What have you set as mid-term and long-term objectives?
Where do you want to lead the gCB by 2015?
In 2015 I see the GCB as an initiator for the meting and conference
industry as well as a competence centre for industry-specific
innovation issues. Well-networked in all the key industries and with a
solid financial basis, an excellent anchoring in international
structures and enjoying the corresponding perception from the
political scene. Frank Wewoda
at the “green meetings and events conference”
experts will develop recommendations
for environmentally-friendly meetings.
n Mainz. How can a conference be organised in a more
sustainable manner? This question will be raised once more at
the “greenmeetings and events Conference”. For the second time
the German Convention Bureau (GCB) and the European
Association of Event Centres (EVVC) will bring together experts
from the most varied fields on 1 and 2 March 2011, in order to
discuss and define the issue of sustainability for conferences.
Specific recommendations for action and solutions are to be
developed at the Congress Centrum Mainz (CCM); they will
become standards for the industry.
We will have to talk straight, summed up Matthias Schultze at the
first sustainability conference in March 2009. At that time he was
still Managing Director of the World Conference Centre. Today he
heads the GCB and insists that “in Mainz the most important
representatives from the conference industry should work out
standards for sustainability and practical solutions together with
scientists and experts valid for the organisation of events.” In his
opinion there is a lack of comprehensive platforms for social,
ecological and economic approaches.
The two-day conference will be under the aegis of Jürgen Trittin,
parliamentary party leader of the Green Party, who will also deliver
the keynote speech. Existing standards and certificates will be
explained during the event in talks, discussion groups and
workshops using examples from the practice. The issue of “Green
Meetings − What is really behind them?” for example will be
presented by Dr. Markus Große Ophoff from the German Federal
Environmental Foundation. An expert’s council with nine members
was created for the conference that includes Dr. Gunther Tiersch,
the chief weatherman at ZDF TV channel. “Sustainability is a
concept that has to be defined and filled with content for each
social group. The efforts of the conference industry in this area are
obvious. But we are still at the beginning of changes,” he explains
his engagement in the expert’s council.
The eyes of the industry will be looking with expectation towards
Mainz at the beginning of March
and then afterwards appraise
whether specific recommendations
for action and standards
for conferences and events have
been developed. Julia Hof
more and more congress cities are taking business and
science on board in order to generate conferences. clusters
and luminaries ensure that there is water beneath the keel.
n Competence. Leipzig is the home of renowned research institutes. These include
several institutes from the Max Planck Society as well as from other research societies,
such as the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the Helmholtz Gemeinschaft and the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft,
the University and the Medical Faculty of the University Hospital of Leipzig.
According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), the links
between science and business function as multiplicators and stimulants for conferences.
And also a reason why the ICCA board chose the Saxon city for its 50th annual congress
between 22 and 26 October 2011. The selection committee attested Leipzig a high
potential in innovation, which attracts global players such as BMW, Porsche or DHL.
That local science activity provides a fertile soil for conferences is something that not just
the capital Berlin and large metropolises such as Munich and Düsseldorf have
discovered, but also smaller cities. In Bremen for example research institutes and
universities are forging alliances. Under the name of “Bremen Brain” the city holds
meetings with professors who give interdisciplinary talks at changing locations once or
twice a year. Networking and getting to know the meetings venues is the objective. “We
have already been able to win various congresses for the city of Bremen,” confirms
Andrea Hess, head of Conference and Event Services at the Bremen Tourism Office. The
combined efforts of the municipal government and the Centre for Applied Space Travel
and Microgravitation (ZARM) landed the 2nd International Space Travel Congress, which
in July 2010 drew approximately 3,600 visitors from around the world to the city.
Companies located in Bremen likewise make their contribution to conferences. Such as
Europe’s largest aviation and space corporation, EADS (European Aeronautic Defence
and Space Company), where during a tour visitors from the Space Travel Congress were
able to see a model of the Columbus module of the ISS.
The TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe describes itself as a science, research and high tech
metropolis. Aside from the highest court in Germany the city is home to three Fraunhofer
institutes as well as international firms such as Bosch, Daimler and Siemens. Experts are
also concentrated in the Research Centre Karlsruhe, where research institutes and major
technical facilities are located. The latter include “TOSKA”, a large facility for testing
superconducting magnets for nuclear fusion, or “ANKA”, microprocessing and material
analysis with synchronous radiation. They are ideal for technical tours for many
technology conferences.
Hamburg is known this year as the “Green Capital Europe“. “As environmental capital
we want to serve as a platform for the exchange across Europe between experts and
citizens on environmental issues, involving the entire city,” explained Environmental
Senator Anja Hajduk after the title was publicly announced in spring 2009. The city,
business people and scientists cooperated during the bid. Last September representatives
from business and science in Hamburg founded the “Association to Support the
Cluster Renewable Energies in Hamburg” (EEHH), a network for renewable energies.
The new cluster focuses on marketing Hamburg more strongly as an attractive international
location for the sales and administration departments of firms in this industry.
How high must the dikes be?
Moreover, together with colleges and universities the association aims to intensify
selected areas of research of renewable energies and environmental issues. It is no
wonder that the city on the Elbe river hosted the “acqua alta” conference in October
2011. It is the only conference in the world dedicated to expert discussion on the
issues of climate change and protection, as well as on its effects in catastrophe
areas. Politicians, scientists, business experts and representatives from municipalities
and countries from all over Europe all sit together at one table, inform
themselves about innovative products and services and discuss the newest
developments and strategies.
How high should dikes be in the future? How do rotating ship propellers in low tide
affect navigable channels? How can rivers be regulated? These are all questions
that scientists discussed at “River Flow 2010” in Braunschweig. The Leichtweiß
Institute Hydraulic Engineering at the Technical University in Braunschweig drew a
good 300 experts from over 32 countries to Lower Saxony and its conference, held
from 8 to 10 September 2010. The hydraulic engineers see the danger of floods
and limiting the consequences as one of their most urgent tasks. The most recent
floods on the Mosel and Rhine rivers demonstrate how pressing the exchange of
ideas is. “We expect that in Europe too there will be an increase in high flooding as
well as in longer droughts,” says organiser Prof. Andreas Dittrich to make the
problem clear − and the demand for conferences. Julia Hof
Im Fokus des neuen Clusters steht eine
stärkere Vermarktung Hamburgs als attraktiver
internationaler Vertriebs- und Verwaltungssitz
für Betriebe der Branche. Außerdem
soll mit den Hochschulen eine intensivere
Fokussierung in ausgewählten Teilbereichen
der Forschung für Erneuerbare
Energien und Umweltthemen erreicht
werden.
Kein Wunder, dass die Stadt an der
Elbe die „acqua alta“ im Oktober 2011 zu
Gast hat. Es ist weltweit der einzige Kongress,
der den fachlichen Austausch zu
den Themen Klimawandel und -schutz
sowie deren Auswirkungen im Katastrophenbereich
fokussiert. Politiker, Wissenschaftler,
Wirtschaftsexperten sowie Vertreter
von Kommunen und Ländern aus
ganz Europa sitzen zusammen an einem
Tisch, informieren sich über innovative
Produkte und Dienstleistungen und diskutieren
über neueste Entwicklungen
und Strategien.
Wie hoch müssen Deiche sein? Wie verändern
rotierende Schiffspropeller bei
Niedrigwasser die Fahrrinnen von Wasserläufen?
Wie können Flüsse reguliert werden?
Das sind Fragen, die Wissenschaftler
beim „River Flow 2010“ in Braunschweig
diskutiert haben. Das Leichtweiß-Institut
für Wasserbau der TU Braunschweig hat
mit der Stadt durch den Kongress vom 8.
bis 10. September 2010 gut 300 Experten
aus über 32 Ländern nach Niedersachen
gelockt. Die Gefahr von Überschwemmungen
und ihre Folgen zu mindern sehen
die Wasserbauingenieure als eine ihrer
vordringlichsten Aufgaben. Die jüngsten
Überschwemmungen an Mosel und Rhein
zeigen, wie notwendig hier der Austausch
ist. „Wir rechnen auch in Europa mit einer
Zunahme heftiger Hochwasser ebenso wie
mit längeren Trockenperioden“, verdeutlicht
Organisator Prof. Andreas Dittrich die
Problemstellung – und die Nachfrage nach
Kongressen. Julia Hof
n rückenwind. Wenn von 2014 bis
2016 das Internationale Congress Centrum
Berlin seine Tore schließt, hat das
gute Gründe: Die Hauptstadt saniert
ihr ICC für einen niedrigen dreistelligen
Millionenbetrag komplett. Als Ersatz
entsteht bis Ende 2013 auf dem Gelände
der ehemaligen Deutschlandhalle eine
Multifunktionshalle für 65 Mio. Euro.
„Wir werden die Fläche und die Kapazität
für Kongresse verdoppeln. Die Nachfrage
dafür besteht“, kommentiert Raimund
Hosch, Vorsitzender der Geschäftsführung
der Messe Berlin. Die Entscheidung,
eine Ersatzhalle für Tagungen zu bauen,
„bietet Planungssicherheit, die wir für
das Berliner Kongressgeschäft brauchen“,
kommentiert Burkhard Kieker, Geschäftsführer
von visitBerlin erleichtert.
Der International Congress and Convention
Kongress-Standorte mitzumischen“,
ist Kieker überzeugt.
Ein neues Kongresszentrum plant auch
Wiesbaden. Nach langem Hin und Her
haben sich die Politiker in der Kurstadt
für den Neubau der Rhein-Main-Hallen
auf einem nahe gelegenen Gelände
entschlossen. „Die mehr als 50 Jahre alte
Hallenstruktur entspricht nicht mehr
den Anforderungen an ein modernes
Kongress- und Messezentrum und kann
in dieser Form auf Dauer nicht mehr im
Wettbewerb bestehen“, erläutert Wiesbadens
Wirtschaftsdezernent Detlev Bendel.
n Tail wind. When the Internationale Congress Centrum (ICC) Berlin
closes its doors from 2014 to 2016 it will be for a good reason. The
German capital will completely renovate its ICC for a low three digit million
Euro sum. As a temporary replacement a multifunctional hall will be
constructed for 65 million Euros till the end of 2013 on the grounds of the
former Deutschlandhalle. “We will double our space and capacity for
conferences. Demand exists for it,” comments Raimund Hosch, Managing
Director of Messe Berlin. The decision to build a replacement hall for
conferences “offers the planning security that we require for the Berlin
conference industry,” adds Burkhard Kieker, Managing Director of
visitBerlin, with relief.
According to the International Congress and Convention Association
(ICCA), Berlin ranks fourth on the world list of conference destinations after
Vienna, Barcelona and Paris. “After the construction of the conference and
exhibition hall and the subsequent renovation of the ICC we will be able to
remain among the top five international conference venues in the future
too,” says a convinced Kieker.
A new conference centre is likewise being planned by Wiesbaden.
After a long period of flip-flopping, politicians in the spa city finally decided
to build a new Rhein Main Hallen exhibition centre at a nearby property.
“The more than 50 year-old halls do no fulfil the demands of a modern
conference and exhibition centre and in this form cannot remain in
competition in the long-term,” explains Wiesbaden’s business department
head Detlev Bendel. The new hall, however, will not go into operation before
2016. Till then the old Rhein Main Hallen centre will still be available. Maximilian
Broglie, Managing Director of the German Society for Inner Medicine
(DGIM), welcomes this. The medical professional association has held its
internist congress in Wiesbaden for decades. The congress is considered
the largest and most important training event in the field of internal
medicine and draws approximately 8,500 participants to the capital of
Hesse every year. “We need planning security,” says Broglie with a view to
the several years of preparation necessary for the major congress.
The Science and Congress Centre Darmstadtium is the name of the new
conference centre in Darmstadt. Its name expresses its aim, since the
element Darmstadtium was discovered in the city and thus expresses the
link with science. After all the former President of the Technical University
Darmstadt (TUD), Johann-Dietrich Wörner, backed the project and helped
to convince the municipal government of the necessity of a new venue.
Having the TUD as building client guarantees a certain contingent of
scientific conferences and university events. Two international congresses
on crystallography in August for example convened about 1,400 scientists
from 50 countries.
The new conference centre ICS in Stuttgart has already proven itself. On
the exhibition fairground located it offers plenary space for up to 5,000
people. This benefits the two global firms Daimler and Porsche as well as
the many research institutes in the regional capital occupied with the issue
of mobility in the future. No wonder that an event such as “auto motor and
sport − Congress 2011, Environment and Technology” on 14 April 2011
was held by the Motor Presse Stuttgart GmbH in the ICS. The conference
centre next to Stuttgart’s airport has also established itself for medical congresses.
Between 12 and 14 May 2010 for example the German Diabetes
Society (DDG) held its annual assembly here.
The German Society for Thorax, Heart and Vascular Surgery (DGTHG)
convened its annual assembly in February 2010 for the second time in a
row at the ICS and has already reserved for 2012. Regular guests such as
DGTHG confirm for Stefan Lohnert, Head of Business Area ICS and Guest
Events at Messe Stuttgart, that “we are particularly well-equipped for
international events in the fields of medicine and pharmaceutics and have
made a name for ourselves among the major conference organisers,
thanks to our size, flexibility and service.”
Lohnert and his team are now directly approaching organisers of larger
formats. “The proximity of the ICS to the Landesmesse Stuttgart exhibition
fairground has proven to be ideal, since we can combine conferences
together with extensive programmes – including exhibitions – held
simultaneously and in this way fulfil almost any wish for space.” Julia Hof
ICS in Stuttgart.
Do you believe that conference centres will have to work
more closely with universities and research institutes in
the future to win more conferences?
Absolutely. The extension and maintenance of networks will become
increasingly important, especially as regards conferences with
international scope. Competition for conferences remains fierce, that
is why especially those locations do better that maintain long term
contacts with regional universities, research institutes and corporate
decision makers, as well as develop joint projects together with them.
Not a few hotels use the chance to “cash in” when a
convention bureau or a conference centre can acquire a
conference for a destination. More and more hotel executives
at least are understanding that sales and marketing can
mean more than simply filling beds. That together with the
city and the organisers they have to all pull together in one
conferences to their hotels.
long. For this reason the Managing Director of the Rosengarten
with local hotel directors to make his destination more
attractive. Maugé has forged a general framework agreement
with 15 hotels, including the GCB member Dorint Kongresshotel
Winning congresses for his hotel long ago became a daily activity for Stefan Fischer,
Director of Sales and Marketing of the Dolce Bad Nauheim. “Conferences with wellknown
scientists and pharmaceutical companies are normal here.” As member of the
advisory committee of the spa town in the Taunus region near Frankfurt, the hotel works
together with institutions in the health and research sector as well as the city. And this
has borne fruit: “The highlight till now was the live transmission of an operation with open
heart surgery from the operating room in the Kerkhoff clinic to our conference hall. Next
time we will broadcast live from the Charité hospital in Berlin,” says Fischer proudly. The
Bad Nauheim Hotel uses the opportunities generated by the fact that 17 special clinics
and rehabilitation centres, as well as the famous sport clinic, are located nearby. Here
the eminent authority Dr. Johannes Peil treats international tennis and football stars as
n Expansion. The congress of the German Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy
(DGPPN) from 24 to 27 November 2010 at the ICC Berlin was attended by 9,500 delegates,
a new record. “Delegate numbers have virtually quadrupled since 2003 thanks to an improved
programme with 40 parallel events and 2,500 papers. We’ve managed to sell it well,” reports
CPO Hanser managing director Hermann Hanser. The congress’s regular venue is the ICC
Berlin, where exhibitors had 1,200 sqm in which to present themselves, and CPO Hanser
created 300 sqm adventure world for delegates’ children. “We will be staying in Berlin, where,
as a client of many years’ standing, we get very good terms and conditions. And our familiarity
with the venue means we are able to adapt things to suit the client – down to the last detail,”
asserts Hanser. With its proliferation of attractive offerings, eliminating the need for a typical
accompanying programme of events, the city plays a large part in the success of the congress.
“The DGPPN’s networking has really brought results,” continues Hanser. Societies and
associations in neighbouring countries with which the DGPPN works have mobilised their
members to such an extent that 20 percent of the delegates came from abroad in 2010. New
specialist fields have generated numerous satellite conferences. From a standing start, the 1st
International Congress on Borderline Personality Disorder, initiated by the Mannheim-based
Central Institute of Mental Health, attracted 1,000 delegates to Berlin from 1 to 3 July 2010.
Intercongress, which specialises in medical conventions, also
organises the German Congress of Orthopaedics and Trauma
been held at the ICC Berlin for the last seven years. “We need
15 auditoriums so that papers can be delivered concurrently,
keeping it there, although we will be moving to a different part
of the Messe Berlin site from 2013,” reveals Schröder.
Intercongress now processes all registrations online and is
committed to promoting of “green” medical conventions.
The many group enquiries received, not just from neighbouring
Volkswagen, are fielded by two members of staff in the events
department, who also organise interactive accompanying
programmes. There has been a very big response to the current
exhibition on mirrors, which is set to become a permanent
fixture at phaeno. “We can place up to 300 guests between the
exhibits, and we have standing room for up to 500 people at
FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will also be played at VfL
Wolfsburg’s stadium, a show called “Move and Play” will be
staged with interactive stations focusing on movement and
skills. Large numbers of visitors are expected for this too,
thanks also to the proximity of Wolfsburg’s station for ICE
high-speed trains.
“The ICE link is a very important sales argument. The station is
literally just around the corner,” says Alexandra Schütz, a project
manager at the Rhein-Sieg-Halle in Siegburg, which opened in
Fünf Fragen an Dr. Christian Tidona
Five questions for Dr. Christian Tidona
n Why did the “The Technopolicy
network” conference take place in
Heidelberg 2010 and who came?
After the conference in Wageningen, which
impressed us strongly, we bid to hold the
next one and were immediately accepted.
The participants and speakers included the
leading regional developers and brought
together various cluster actors from the
fields of business, science and politics.
Why did you choose the Print Media
Academy as the venue?
For up to 150 participants the Print Media
Academy in Heidelberg offers a modern
setting and good technical equipment, at a
good price-quality relationship. For events
above this number of participants we go to
the Kongresszentrum Rosengarten in
Mannheim, which of course offers
completely different dimensions.
What are the key factors necessary
to establish a cluster?
What distinguishes a cluster is first of all an
accumulation of excellent research at a
certain critical mass and density. Here this
is provided by the European Laboratory for
Molecular Biology (EMBL) and the German
Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) for
example. Secondly, an absolutely outstand-
Photo: BioRN Cluster Management
n Wieso fand die Konferenz „The Technopolicy network“ Ende 2010 in Heidelberg
herausragende akademische Wissenschaft
ing academic science institute is crucial at
the centre for a high technology cluster
such as biotechnology, such as the elite
university Heidelberg. It is the highest
ranking German university in the QS World
University Ranking 2010.
How do you present science and
business at excursions?
We have drawn up an “Innovation Tour”
booklet solely for such excursions. It
contains a tour with stops in Neuheimer
Feld and in the university campus at
Heidelberg, in order to show what excellent
research exists here.
What can other regions that want
to develop clusters in a similar way
learn from the Biorn Cluster?
The commitment of a certain group of key
personalities is decisive – for us that was
not more than a dozen persons. This
includes CEOs from major firms, the heads
of the large research institutes, lord mayors
and university rectors. They have to unconditionally
support the change processes
necessary for cluster development.
Dr. Christian Tidona is Managing
Director of the Biorn Cluster
Management gmbH. www.biorn.org
ausschlaggebend wie bei uns die Eliteuniversität
Heidelberg als höchstplatzierte
deutsche Universität im QS World University
Ranking 2010.
sitzt. Besuche der Firma
Roche sind ebenfalls naheliegend.
n Was können andere regionen, die
netzwerke und Cluster entwickeln
wollen, von der Biorn lernen?
Entscheidend ist das Engagement einer bestimmten
Gruppe an Schlüsselpersönlichkeiten
– bei uns nicht mehr als ein Dutzend.
Dazu gehören CEOs der Großunternehmen,
die Chefs der großen Forschungseinrichtungen,
Oberbürgermeister und die
Universitätsrektoren. Diese müssen die für
die Clusterentwicklung notwendigen Change-Prozesse
vorbehaltlos unterstützen.
Christian Tidona, geschäftsführer Biotech-Cluster
rhein-neckar (Biorn),
das mit 40 Mio. Euro Bundesmitteln
gefördert wird. www.biorn.org
