Diese Prismen werden aus Kalkspat in Standardqualität
hergestellt. Das Löschungsvermögen ist etwa 10 -5 für das
geradeaus durchgehende Bündel, die Ebenheit der
Stirnflächen ist besser als 1 λ, die Deformation einer
durchgehenden ebenen Welle ist kleiner als 2 λ und die
prismatische Ablenkung beträgt bis zu 5'.
Usable aperture angles of Glan prisms
αe und αo sind die Grenzwinkel der Totalreflexion. Innerhalb
dieser Grenzwinkel ist das durchgehende Licht polarisiert.
Licht mit Einfallswinkeln |α| > |αe| wird am Luftspalt total
reflektiert. Licht (beide Polarisationsrichtungen) mit |α| > |αo|
wird durchgelassen und daher nicht mehr polarisiert, der
nutzbare Öffnungswinkel ist überschritten.
αe and αo are the critical angles for total internal reflection at
the inner surface. The transmitted light is polarized when the
incidence angle lies between these two limits. All rays with
angles of incidence |α| > |αe| are totally reflected at the air gap.
All rays (both polarization directions) with |α| > |αo| will be
transmitted and be superimposed to the polarized light: the
usable acceptance angle of the prism is exceeded.
These prisms are produced from standard grade calcite. The
extinction ratio is about 10 -5 for the undeviated ray. Flatness
of the outer surfaces is better than 1 λ. Deformation of a
transmitted plane wave is less than 2 λ and prismatic
deviation is a maximum of 5'.
