TTS-Gründer und Geschäftsführer Gerd Schröder begrüßte
beim 7.
TTS Founder and Chief Executive Gerd Schröder welcomed
220 guests from around the world to the seventh TTS Knowledge
Transfer Forum 2012 in the Heidelberg Print Media
Academy – and looked back on a successful year: 164 employees
from 21 countries delivered revenues of € 20.1 million.
ttS Founder and Chief executive gerd Schröder welcomed 220
participants to the ttS knowledge transfer Forum in the Heidelberg
Print Media Academy. “Compared with our first customer
information day with 16 attendees in a country winery, that’s not a
bad result.” the attentive guests had traveled from 23 countries.
two of them had come a particularly long way: they had traveled
from robert-bosch-engineering in india!
Behind the scenes at TTS
under the headings, “behind the scenes, on the stage, in the
rehearsal room” Schröder presented the developments over the
intervening years. First, he explained the changes in the company
structure. all of the ttS companies are now united under
one roof, ttS gmbH. the partners gerd Schröder, ulrich ude,
Harald Weingartner and Dr. rolf Zajonc are the exclusive and
equal shareholders in ttS gmbH. “in this way we have achieved
a focus on a common objective and initiated a generation change
to ensure that ttS will remain an independent company, managed
by the owners,” Schröder said.

in sechs ländern (Deutschland, österreich, Schweiz,
mit dem Stuttgarter e-learning-Spezialisten know How! ag sei
„So konnten beim
weltweiten Schulungsprojekt von bosch rexroth 900 anwender
in 30 ländern in neun Wochen geschult werden!“
Im Proberaum
kein erfolgreiches unternehmen besteht ohne innovationen und
Visionen.
in 2012. tt knowledge nuggets, kleinste, rund sechsminütige
gefragt.
zusammenwachsen, die entscheidungen On Premise versus On
Demand und SaP-erP versus SaP business by Design würden
die Nutzung einzelner Komponenten „on premise“ und „on demand“
„Davon bin
ich restlos überzeugt!“
The human factor
Qualified professionals from around the world are the guarantors
of TTS’ good reputation. In the past year, 48 new experts “refreshed”
the now 164-member team from 21 nations. “We speak
15 different languages at TTS,” Schröder stated, adding with a
chuckle, “although we are not yet at the point where everybody
understands all of those 15 languages!” Recruitment has been
easy: 25 percent of new recruits came on the personal recommendation
of present employees. this creates a good climate
within the company. “the feelgood factor is very strong.”
Prestigious HQ
new employees need space to think and work creatively. in
2010 and 2011, TTS obtained altogether 2,800 square meters
of new office space – including an old town villa in Cologne and
an industrial conversion in berlin. this provides room for further
growth. In 2010, TTS moved its Heidelberg HQ into a prestigious
building on the banks of the river neckar. around 100 employees
are working in the former property of the Heidelberg university
at the edge of the old town.
the leader in talent management & corporate learning is active
in europe, asia and america and has subsidiaries in six countries
(germany, austria, Switzerland, Spain, the netherlands and
great britain). “We have invested massively in our expansion
abroad.” in 2011, ttS opened its subsidiary in london. in 2012,
France should follow. “ttS is becoming more and more international.
this is also visible in the newly designed internet presence
of our ambitious company, which already achieved its objective
soon after the start: search engine optimization put ttS at number
1 with google on the important search terms (keywords)
while the number of virtual visitors increased 25 percent, and the
dwelling time on the homepage increased by 30 percent.
On the stage
the enlarged complement of employees came about for a very
good reason: TTS revenues increased 46 percent in 2011 to
€20.1 million. This profitable growth strengthened the shareholder
equity, which now amounts to €4 million. In 2012 too,
the figures point to success: in the first quarter, revenues grew
once more, by 36 percent. broken down into its constituent parts,
35 percent of revenues are driven by software, 29 percent by
talent management, 20 percent by training and 16 percent by
e-learning. Moreover, as a result of the collaboration with the
Stuttgart-based e-learning specialist know-How! ag, ttS has
not only become the largest reseller of Know How-Office 2010
(from a standing start!) but has also opened up new business
activities with its customers. being able to follow the waves in the
training business, and in a flexible manner, has also proved to be
an astute business strategy. “as a result of this approach, bosch
rexroth could train 900 users in 30 countries in just nine weeks
as part of a global project.”
In the rehearsal room
a successful company needs innovation and vision. ttS always
keeps its finger on the pulse, to identify market trends and requirements.
the latest software products include rollout Manager,
Design Manager, assessment analyzer and tt guide. the
newly developed iPad Publisher and ttS own knowledge app
are, according to Schröder, solutions that precisely match the
challenges for ttS customers in 2012. tt knowledge nuggets,
the smallest, around six-minute duration learning objects and
modules for the iPad, simplify intercultural communication. For
example, what is the correct way to greet a Chinese business
partner? What is the dress code? Users find the answers quickly
and conveniently with a look at the iPad. these short solutions
are especially in demand from management. they want to be
taught the most important factors. the upcoming keynote from
Professor Wim Veen would confirm to Schröder that this was the
right strategy.
Under the cloud
another exciting topic that has been wafting over everybody’s
heads for some time is, of course, the “cloud”. With cloud computing,
data and software is made available directly over the internet.
based on his many years of experience, Schröder dared
to glimpse into the future and commented on the acquisition of
the american cloud-computing specialist SuccessFactors by the
Walldorf-based software company SaP: on the surface, the acquisition
means that SaP has created competition on its own
doorstep, at least in the talent management sphere. However,
with business byDesign the company also offered an on demand
solution for the first time outside of SAP. In future, these offerings
will grow together and the stark choice of either on premise
or on demand and either SaP erP or SaP business byDesign
will not have to be made. ultimately, SaP will offer an it architecture
that will flexibly allow the use of individual on premise
and on demand components, providing an answer to the permanent
changes in the business and organizational structure of its
customers. a look back at the development history of SaP r/3
shows that the strategy is not completely new. ttS has, in any
case, equipped itself, trained its employees in the new technologies,
and concluded a reseller agreement with SuccessFactors.
Moreover, users can from now on discuss these and many other
topics in the newly developed ttS business Content Community.
in this, Schröder sees a fantastic platform for customers to
interact and exchange ideas with each other. “i am utterly convinced
of this!”
“Every type of communication means learning!”
WIM VEEN
Was „Digital Natives“ antreibt
ganz anderen bedingungen ins leben.
– 36 Stunden nonstop, ohne Schlaf, kaum essen. Was sie fes-
the digital age is changing the way we learn in business
The generation that has grown up in the digital age is changing
learning behavior in business. In his keynote, Professor
Wim Veen from the Technical University of Delft shed some
light on how this has happened.
Provocative, trenchant, humorous and futuristic. around 220 listeners
were held spellbound by the sharp-witted answers that
Professor Wim Veens gave to the question, “How will the upcoming
generation change learning in the workplace?” His opening
lecture at the ttS knowledge transfer Forum 2012 initiated a
passionate plenary discussion.
What motivates “Digital Natives”?
The Net-Generation – today’s 13 to 24 year olds – is making
its start in life under entirely different circumstances. the “Digital
Native’s” first view of the world is through Windows, not windows.
even a 16-month child can recognize the symbols for photos
or videos on an iPhone. “Children learn very quickly that they
can master and influence streams of information.” Play looks
quite different these days. the Professor provoked astonishment
with his report, delivered in a charming Dutch accent, of an experiment
in the 1990s: 15 students went online via the oversized
computers still typical at that time for 36 hours nonstop, without
sleep and with hardly anything else to eat. What kept them going
was the computer game, “World of Warcraft”. the participation
of more than 100 12 to 16 year-olds, who have collectively built
11
12
selte, war das Computerspiel „World of Warcraft“. Ebenso leidenschaftlich:
Raumschiff „zusammenbauen“. Jeder mit einer eigenen Internetidentität,
einer speziellen aufgabe. Was treibt diese generation
an?
also vom lernen, ab? Diese eltern-Sorgen wischte der Professor
vom Tisch: „Keineswegs!“. Denn jeder Mausklick, jeder Kontakt
Hausaufgaben machen, chatten, Musik hören, telefonieren, alles
laufe parallel.
Dabei untersuchte Veen deren Zapp-Verhalten.
zusammengefasst. Das sehe man später in Aktionen. „Schalten
selbst organisiertes, informelles „Lernen“, will man es denn so
bedeute Vertrauen. Ein Mitarbeiter eines Unternehmens
habe beispielsweise seinen kollegen in aller Welt via internet
3.404 Fragen beantwortet. Darauf habe er 304 Feedbacks, also
Reputationen, erhalten. Wissensmanagement mal anders! „Dieser
Mitarbeiter ist unkündbar!“
Kernkompetenzen besser nutzen!
müsse also ganz neu durchdacht werden.
Wirtschaft voranzubringen.
a spaceship in the current online game “eve”, has been equally
passionate. each with a unique internet identity and a particular
task. What motivates this generation? According to Veen, there
are three factors at play:
1. i determine my own strategy
2. in this environment, i make decisions, i create something
3. games and playmaking are fun
Communication means learning
Do all those trips through the World Wide Web isolate children
and cause concentration deficits? Does this all mean that schoolchildren
can barely follow a traditional lesson? is all this time
spent online a useless waste of time, keeping them away from
reality and therefore from learning? the Professor wiped away
these typical parent worries: “no way!“ because every mouseclick,
every contact via the internet is learning: it means communication
with the world at large. “there is no learning without
communication!” even six-year-olds are able to make contact
with children the same age in Japan. they often conduct seven
to ten conversations in parallel. Doing homework, chatting, listening
to music, speaking on the phone, all at the same time. “this
is multitasking in anyone’s book!” isolation? “they are communicating
together with a thousand friends!” learning from books
is, by contrast, antiquated. need an example? “before you have
found page 3 of the instructions manual, your child has already
configured your mobile phone!” The Net Generation has capabilities
that are called upon all too rarely in traditional lessons, or for
that matter in business, even if they are employed at all.
Strategic zapping
another study by the university of Delft is interesting: “i have
watched television with children for months on end. it’s fun!”
Veen studied their way of zapping channels. He let them switch
from one program to another. What he observed was not arbitrary
behavior, but rather a complex strategy. “Children approach
subjects in a nonlinear way and can, in this way, digest three
times as much information as adults,” according to Veen. They
are in a position to assimilate fragments of information. they paid
attention to TV soaps only at specific points in the drama. The
script is uninteresting. “When the actors start to speak, they zap
them away!” the really important parts, so the children tell him,
are in any case summarized at the end. You can see that later, in
actions. “Switch the sound off, and you understand what children
really see,” Veen challenged his audience.
The new ethics of learning
“Homo Zappiens” has thereby developed a new ethic: you learn
from passionate interest, not from duty, and in a quite personal
learning environment. but, how can you validate and certify such
self-organized and informal “learning” (if you want to call it that)?
From Veen’s point of view, it is quite easy: via virtual reputations.
according to the Professor’s thesis, this depends on the activities
of an internet user. reputation means trust. For example,
supposing a company employee has answered 3404 questions
from his colleagues around the world, via the internet. He has
received 304 feedbacks for these questions, i.e. credits to his
reputation. a quite different approach to knowledge management!
“this employee is irreplaceable!”
Use core competences better!
until now, learning in business has all too often been regarded
as a cost factor. at the same time, it is the most important thing
of all. “Our expertise is all ‘upstairs’ – in the head.” now, modern
technology makes it possible to nullify the limitations of information
and communication. With modern media, communication
is possible, and easy, anytime, anywhere. the only limits are
biological, Veen declared with a chuckle. As a result, knowledge
transfer, whether at school or in a company, must be rethought.
“incredibly, there are still companies that don’t allow employees
to access the internet.”
Born in 1949, Professor Dr. Wim Veen has held the Chair
in education and technology at the technical university of
Delft since 2011. today the Dutch educational scientist is advising
companies and governments on the setup and structuring
of knowledge in organizations. in his current research
activities, he focuses on technology and methods for learning
with new media as well as their impact on future learning
and work behavior. Since 2010 he has been a member of
the european learning industry group (elig), which has
set itself the objective of promoting forward-looking learning
content and methods.
Nichts geht ohne IT
Umso wichtiger seien hilfreiche Informationstechniken. „Wo liegen
IT“, so Weingartner.
talent management - an important factor in human resources (hr)
Talent management has evolved to become an important
factor within the human resources (HR) sector. For this reason,
the TTS Knowledge Transfer Forum dedicated a presentation
stream to this topic, opened by TTS Executive Director
Harald Weingartner.
“Back in 2006 at the first TTS Forum the subject of talent management
was still wearing short pants,” Weingartner stated. Yet
today, personnel-political measures to ensure the long-term retention
of professionals in key functions are becoming increasingly
significant. “When I googled yesterday, the term talent management
registered 119 million hits! the topic has arrived in the
corporate world, in fact, it’s already establishment. and now as
ever, it is a process topic.”
Nothing works without IT
Helpful IT is more important than ever. “So where are the 50,000
master data records that i need? i hope they are all in the same
systems. i hope they are in the same tables, without transmutations
or duplicates, and i hope they are linked to the global userid.
For all this, we need it,” Weingartner said. He said that many
are active in the recruitment of specialists and the positioning of
their companies as attractive employers (“employer branding”).
at the same time, there is a strong tendency towards simplifying
structures and processes. Simplicity, and preferably on the
move, is the keyword.
15

Prozesse längst etabliert, talent Management sei etabliert.
neue Schritte anzugehen.
On-premise vs. on-demand
einer dieser Schritte sei die
„Wolke“, die gerade hereinschwebe.
Mit der Übernahme
von SuccessFactors durch SaP
wachsen die Welten von erP
(on premise) und Cloud (on demand)
zusammen. „SAP möchte
in den nächsten drei Jahren
20 Milliarden euro umsatz mit
Cloud-Software machen. aktuell
sind es 800 Millionen.“ Die
Cloud sei für viele Firmen möglicherweise
eine kostengünstige,
einfach zugängliche und leicht
zu implementierende lösung.
Cloud: Nicht für alle ideal
Die Schattenseite: „Zahlreiche
Prozesse müssen dazu harmonisiert
werden. ich muss mich
loslösen vom gedanken, dass
meine Daten bei mir zu Hause
stehen. und daraus ergeben
sich viele Fragen.“ eine Frage
könnte sein, wie man die Daten,
die man in die Cloud packt, jemals
bekommt. „Und wenn alle
erP-anbieter Prozesse in die
Cloud setzen, was bedeutet das
Man habe frühzeitig Mitarbeiter
was der kunde wirklich benötigt.“
Neue Vortragsabfolge
Management weiterzugeben“, so Weingartner.
Processes are mainstream
Supporting applications assist with performance management,
i.e. with the measurement, governance and control of performance,
with succession planning and management of upcoming
talent, as well as with employee qualification (learning). “I used
to think that learning is a soft topic. Yet it is a very hard topic. the
question is no longer whether you learn, but how!” the basic processes
are now mainstream in this area. talent management is
mainstream. “On the other hand, there is still a lot of movement!”
it’s time to take new steps forward.
On premise vs. on demand
One of these steps is the “cloud”,
which has recently drifted in.
With SaP’s acquisition of SuccessFactors,
the worlds of erP
(on premise) and cloud (on demand)
are converging. ”SaP
would like to make € 20 billion
revenue with cloud software over
the next three years. at present,
it is € 800 million. For many companies,
the cloud could be a costeffective
and easily accessible
solution that can be implemented
quickly.
Cloud: not ideal for everyone
the other side of the coin: “Many
processes must be harmonized.
i must let go of the idea that my
data must reside in my house.
and this gives rise to many questions.”
One question could be
how you get back the data that
you put in the cloud. “and if all
erP vendors put processes in
the cloud, what does that mean
for solutions that are already
there?” Much is still unclear;
much is still speculation. “but we
are ready,” Weingartner said, announcing
the forward-looking production planning at ttS. ttS
recruited employees who are familiar with cloud issues at an
early stage. ttS’ executive Director sees the best prospects for
success in a stable platform with cloud. “but we must always
consider what the customer really needs.”
Broader coverage of the issues
Weingartner concluded by announcing additional presentations.
“to cover all of these complex topical areas, ttS has invited
five instead of three speakers to share their knowledge of talent
management.” the presentations were therefore shorter, but no
less informative. the focus was on the banking sector, which has
achieved tremendous results in Hr, and what’s more during the
global financial crisis.

“The subject of succession planning for executive leadership
will become increasingly important over the coming years.”
Melina Giannis is responsible for personnel development
at the KfW Group. At the TTS Forum, she presented some
efficient ways to systematize and structure the search for
suitable executive leadership more powerfully than before,
and to be more transparent regarding the competences and
strengths of in-house employees. The objective: to fill vacant
positions quickly and without disruptive transitions.
Broad-ranging tasks
KfW Bank was set up in 1948 as a credit institution to support
the reconstruction of germany (kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau).
its historic mission: to distribute money provided via the Marshall
Plan. Over time, it acquired additional tasks as germany’s “promotional
bank”. The Federal Republic of Germany has an 80 percent
share in the institution, while the german länder (states) hold
the other 20 percent. With total assets of € 494.8 billion (as of December
31, 2011), the kfW is now one of germany’s third largest
banks. the group’s headquarters are in Frankfurt and it is represented
through offices in Berlin, Bonn and Cologne as well as
more than 70 offices and subsidiary branches around the world.
kfW supports the sustainable improvement of economic, social
and ecological living conditions at home and abroad, providing €
70.4 billion in pursuit of this aim in 2011. Key focus points of its
work include support for small and medium-sized enterprises and
the setting up of new businesses, programs for the housing industry,
environmental protection, educational assistance for private
customers, financial programs for municipalities and regional
investment banks, export and project finance, and assistance
for developing countries and countries going through periods of
transformation. Furthermore, the Federal republic can entrust
special tasks to the kfW within the framework of exceptional projects.
an example of this is the privatization of former nationalized
Geschäftsführung an.
unternehmensberaterin. Die überzeugenden argumente:
Führungskräfte können bei regelmäßigen gesprächen mit ihrem
Vorgesetzten (unabhängig von Mitarbeitergesprächen) ihre Entwicklungsvorstellungen
einbringen und erhalten ein Feedback
zur einschätzung ihrer Potenziale und kompetenzen. Das Mehraugenprinzip
erlaubt dabei objektivere bewertungen.
derzeitiger Hierarchiestufe geeignet).
spannender Punkt“, so giannis.
Führungskultur an.
Konkrete Ergebnisse erzielt
industries such as Deutsche Post and Deutsche telekom, as well
as the payment of the German contribution to the first EU rescue
package for greece in 2010-11.
Melina giannis summarizes the demands placed on the bank in
this way: “kfW has a broad range of tasks, but is committed to the
policy of sustainability in all its business affairs.” this also cascades
down to the bank’s employee profile. The Group, which has
the best Triple A ratings, had 4,763 employees as of May 2012.
Greater transparency on capabilities
Melina giannis outlined demographic developments over the
coming ten years and the resulting challenges for personnel recruitment
and development at kfW: between now and 2022 the
bank is expected to replace 150 employees at the team and departmental
leadership and senior executive levels. Almost 40 percent
of the leadership positions that become vacant will be filled
by candidates who bring no concrete career experience at the
desired level – and each successful executive can in turn require
two or three replacements. kfW manages the existing succession
processes in the bank via dedicated “Succession Management”.
“The process first ran in 2009 and in future Personnel Development
will run the process every two years,” giannis declared. “in
this way we accommodate demographic developments, achieve
greater transparency with regard to the available in-house potential
and minimize the risk of know-how walking out the door.”
Recognizing occupational shortages
Since 2009, the individual executive has benefited from succession
planning, as well as kfW as a whole. “People within the staff
council and among employees in general had doubts and concerns
about what the procedure could bring or couldn’t bring. but
we were able to put their minds at rest,” explained the former corporate
consultant. the persuasive arguments: by holding regular
conversations with their superiors, senior executives can (independently
of their meetings with colleagues) raise their development
expectations and get feedback, enabling them to judge their
competences and capabilities. based on the principle that several
viewpoints provide a more complete picture, they will get a more
objective evaluation. the goal is future-oriented personal career
planning. the various functions at kfW get more transparency
into the capabilities of their employees and, as a result, they can
more easily identify potential shortages in key positions and risks
arising from loss of expertise.
The process
the actual succession management process starts with a brief
self-profile, created by the employee himself. According to Giannis,
this raised many questions at first – above all, people wondered
how the self-appraisal affected their own chances for promotion
and their personal objectives. next, the superior gives his
assessment of the employee, with the opportunity to fill out various
fields, for example under the heading “Current competences
and capabilities” or “Possible future development”. employees’
responses to these questions vary in length. However, the fields
“Competence” and “Capability” are mandatory. Here, the superior
assesses competence on a scale from 1 (clear development
need) to 5 (remarkable strengths) and capability on a scale from
a (suitable for promotion in the short term) through b (suitable
for promotion in the medium term, i.e. two to three years) and
C (suited to tasks of equivalent value at the current level). the
result goes into a development matrix. “We invite the superiors
to give their recommendations on how the employees could be
deployed in future. For example, would the team leader in the
accounts department also make a good department manager?
in this way, the knowledge about individual areas is brought together
and flows into our database. Ideally, when an executive
leaves we get a list of potential successors, which we can then
review more extensively.
Objective: a personnel organigram
the Functional Succession Committee, representing functional
and departmental heads as well as personnel development and
personnel management, receives the final appraisal. To demonstrate
how this works in practice, let us take the example of a
team leader: after the self-appraisal and development matrix, all
of the other departmental leaders can give their own appraisal of
the team leader. The end result goes into the final development
matrix and a potential personnel organigram. “the resulting feedback
to the executive leadership from direct managers can be
fascinating,” giannis said, as the verdict of the Succession Committee
is not always in full agreement with the self-appraisal of the
employees or the assessment of the direct superiors. it comes
down to a good communication and leadership culture.
Concrete results
With succession management, each level of leadership in each
functional area of kfW has a high level of visibility over the capability
spread of the current leadership and gives a clear impression
of the succession situation and the gender and age profile.
building on this, various corrective measures can be taken, for
example to create more balanced structures in particular areas,
or to increase the number of women in leadership positions.
Outlook
“There is still a bit of fine-tuning to do over the coming years,”
giannis explained. “We’re asking ourselves: Where have we
been too open to suggestions? Where were there too many discussions?
in addition, we are generating a lot of interesting data
within the framework of succession management. We should
make even more positive use of this data in future.” this is now
a focus for improvement. kfW is also considering the extension
of succession management to other parts of the employee base,
since this is where the bank will find the potential junior management
of the future.
Manuel Hugentobler, Head Strategic HR & Projects,
die Schweizer Privatbank Julius Bär. Anschaulich legte er im
vollbesetzten Vortragsraum dar, was Julius Bär unter Leis-
betonte Manuel Hugentobler. „Aber auch für den Umgang
unter den Mitarbeitenden.“
Manuel Hugentobler, Head Strategic HR & Projects, presented
the Swiss private bank Julius Bär as a modern financial
services group with a long tradition. In a packed lecture
theater he vividly described Julius Bär’s understanding of
performance management and the instruments needed to
implement it concretely. The title of his presentation: “Performance
Management@Julius Bär”.
Founded in 1857 by Julius Bär and a family business until 2005,
the Swiss financial services group is today a globally active company
with 3,600 employees in 40 locations in 20 countries. The
company sees performance as the key factor within a corporate
culture which both nurtures and challenges talent. in dealing with
customers, investors and employees Julius bär always embraces
three corporate values:
• Care
• Passion
• Excellence
“these guiding principles form part of the day-to-day work of
each and every employer,” Manuel Hugentobler stressed. “they
likewise apply to the working environment among colleagues.”
“An employee who gets a positive assessment, but finds no opportunity for promotion over the long
term, can very easily become dissatisfied.”
Potenziale klar definieren
• Transparente, leistungsgerechte Entlohnung
• Leistungsmanagement
Capital Portfolio“ zusammengefasst. Die leistung wird mit den
Werten A++, A+, A, B, C (von „Erwartungen deutlich übertroffen“
Keine falschen Erwartungen wecken
funktionsfremden bereichen. Mitarbeiterführung betreffe nur 20
Prozent der Gesamtaufgabe eines Teamleiters. „80 Prozent des
arbeitsinhaltes ist Daily business“, so Hugentobler. in höheren
levels sei hingegen Führungsverantwortung statt fachlichen
Skills gefragt.
beurteilung falsche erwartungen wecken.
Defining capabilities clearly
With the review of the quality of processes and results for the
year 2011, Julius bär rewrote the objectives for employee assessments.
“For example, employees should become proactive,
in order to relieve the burden on management,” according to Hugentobler.
A new, simplified approach to assessments helps to
define the value of a capability and to make it more tangible for
both managers and employees. All of this would be reflected in
a simplified personnel development plan. Hugentobler identified
four elements that should define the parameters of day-to-day
work:
• Vision und guidelines
• Transparent, performance-related pay
• Performance management
• Employee leadership
The development plan
People management at Julius bär is based on performance
assessment and capability evaluation. these two pillars support
career planning. “We ask: what is an employee’s current
function? in which direction should he develop? based on the
juxtaposition of the current and target situation we can identify
the employee’s deficits and create a concrete support plan.” The
question that comes to the fore is whether the employee has
what it takes to reach the next level of management or if he is
just right in his current position. after the assessment, performance
and ability are summarized in the “Human Capital Matrix”.
Performance is judged on the scale of values a++, a+, a, b, C
(from “clearly exceeded expectations” to “did not meet requirements”.
the capability assessment ends with the recommenda-
tions “Move” (suited to the next level), “grow” (suited to more
complex jobs on the same level) and “Master” (perfectly suited to
the current position).
Set the right expectations
It is difficult to make the advance to the level of a team leader in
unfamiliar functional areas. employee leadership is required in
only 20 percent of a team leader’s total activity. “80 percent of
work content is daily routine,” Hugentobler said. by contrast, at
higher levels there is more emphasis on leadership responsibility
and less on technical skills. “Moreover it becomes awkward if we
create false expectations in our assessments. the employee can
easily become dissatisfied if no opportunities for promotion arise
over the long term.”
Appraisals by superiors only
in general, every employee at Julius bär can initiate a self-assessment
– or he can be invited to do so by his superior. However,
only the superior, and not the employee himself, can complete
the resulting evaluation of capabilities. “We deem it inappropriate
for an employee to judge his own potential.” On the other hand,
at the end of the assessment the employee can express his personal
opinion on how he sees his further development. also, in
the context of objective-setting discussions at the start of the
year, deficits are defined and the superior specifies the further
training that should be included in the development plan. “at the
moment we are discussing how we can measure the effectiveness
of this training, in other words, if the employee’s skills have
improved. this should clarify the current status quo, providing a
basis for reviewing the effectiveness of the training in the following
year.”
Die leichtigkeit des Kommunizierens
ease of communication
Head of HR Solutions der Heidelberger sovanta AG, in seinem
Vortrag verdeutlichte.
an traditionelle Geschäftsanwendungen kombinieren“,
so Egger.
Manuel egger
Any time, any place, anyone: tablet computers and smart
phones symbolize mobility and the new ease of communication.
This is exactly what makes their use attractive for HR
processes, as Manuel Egger, Head of HR solutions at the
Heidelberg company sovanta AG explained in his presentation.
“Business apps from sovanta stand for a new generation
of applications, which combine the ease of use of computer
apps with the tough demands placed on traditional
business applications,” Egger said.
Manuel egger used a picture of his young son to demonstrate
the childish simplicity of operating a tablet. not yet a year old,
the boy lay on a bed and managed to unlock the iPad with a
fingertip – fascinated by himself and his abilities. It is precisely
this ease of use that makes tablets, smart phones and other innovative
communications tools so attractive – also currently for
Hr processes. “it comes down to the question, how can we get
the right information to the end user easily?” egger said. in this
respect the expectations have grown enormously, and not just for
end users. “the reason is no secret: apps!” according to egger
there are currently more than 600,000 apps available in the app
Store, 140,000 alone for the iPad. “Nowadays apps can reach
ten or 20 million users within a few days.” What has become
“We must pick up the user where he is.”
Manuel egger
27
28
erreichen.“ Was fürs Private schon zum alltag gehöre, werde nun
Consumer
Apps seien einfach, aufgabenspezifisch, attraktiv, schnell und
administrationsfrei. bei traditionellen geschäftsanwendungen
hingegen stünden die themen Prozessintegration, Datenkonsis-
tenz, benutzer- und berechtigungsverwaltung, Datensicherheit
und Wartbarkeit im Vordergrund. „Wir müssen also zwei Welten
Add-on: Informationen vom PC
outine in daily use is crossing over into professional life. “People
are asking, why can’t i work that way?” Consequently the number
of business apps is increasing at an incredible rate. “the spread
of these business apps is unstoppable,” according to egger.
Bringing two worlds together
the time has come to extend the user-friendliness of apps to
business processes. Consumer apps are easy, task-oriented, attractive
and fast, and they require no maintenance. by contrast,
with traditional business applications the emphasis is on process
integration, data consistency, user and privilege management,
data security and maintainability. “We must therefore combine
the two,” egger declared, “and the crucial question is, how we
bring the two worlds together.” a business app as a mobile and/
or browser app must be as easy and attractive as a consumer
app. it would need to be based on a deep understanding of the
business, would have to be fully and cleanly integrated into the
backend system, would have to support current security standards,
and would have to be open to maintenance and upgrades.
“it’s important that the requirements should also derive from the
users themselves and that the applications should be dead simple
to use.”
Design is decisive
the primary design consideration for a business app that will
carry content must be ease of use. above all, it must be based
on the requirements of the end user, independent of the status
quo and with the involvement of the users themselves.”We must
pick up the user where he is, not where we would like him to be!”
is how egger expressed it. the development process must be
design-driven. “in this way you will be working with what you see,
that means with meaningful graphics, not with ambivalent concepts.”
You only start coding once you have finished defining the
functionality, navigation and graphical design. egger illustrated
this principle with actual applications for various Hr processes,
such as risk analysis around key positions and succession management
and with reference to sovanta business apps, which
present Hr kPis (key performance indicators).
Add-on: information from the PC
business apps are well suited to Hr processes where you have
to decide if mobile communications can be used in a more meaningful
way, combined with the PC. “Performance management is
a good example,” egger said. sovanta is exclusively focused on
the subject of business apps and offers these in the Hr, management
reporting and CrM. as an example of an Hr business app
egger mentioned sovanta iPeople, which supports executives in
their daily work and decision-making. embedded in this system
are among other things 25 field-tested, predefined HR KPIs, an
organization and regional view, top and bottom lists for quick
identification of variances, functions for prompting birthdays and
company anniversaries, a function for sending mails from within
the application as well as an info channel, which can integrate
existing business applications into the app. the advantages in
brief: increased productivity via fact-based management, higher
levels of satisfaction among managers and employees, improved
quality of personnel leadership, increased levels of active system
usage and simultaneous elimination of training costs, the easiest
possible implementation with minimal integration costs, as well
as maintenance, including integration by sovanta.
Ob Business to Consumer (B2C) oder Business to Business
1. Die Schulung externer Mitarbeiter: Viele Unternehmen sind
rechtlich verpflichtet, ihre Auftragnehmer zu qualifizieren – in
Sicherheitsstandards sowie beim gesundheits- und arbeitsschutz,
etwa in der öl- und gasbranche.
2. Die Qualitätssicherung auf Partnerseite: in der automobilindustrie
können Servicetechniker beispielsweise in komplexe
Diagnosesysteme eingewiesen werden. Damit sichert das unternehmen
seine eigene hohe Servicequalität und kann Händ-
Whether Business to Consumer (B2C) or Business to Business
(B2B): with the extended SAP Learning Solution xLSO,
companies can, if they wish, integrate both their customers
and their partners into computer-supported training processes.
In the words of SAP product manager Thomas Jenewein,
this approach also enables the distribution of learning
content – via web shops and online catalogs.
the add-on has proved worthwhile for more than 1600 customers
who already use the SaP learning Solution and would now
like to extend it to external target groups, for example to integrate
partners, dealers, customers and suppliers. the extension
supports various learning methods such as classroom training
or e-learning. Jenewein named the four key objectives for the
deployment of the external training solution:
1. Training of external employees: Many companies in sectors
such as oil and gas are legally required to qualify their subcontractors
in security standards or in health and industrial safety.
2. Quality assurance for partners: in the automotive industry,
technical service personnel (for example) may need to be inducted
in complex diagnostic systems. in this way, the company
protects its own high service quality and transfers first class product
knowledge to its dealers. When this is applied to healthcare,
lern erstklassiges Produktwissen vermitteln.
will Werkstattmitarbeiter von Partnerunternehmen
Schulung aller Mitglieder seiner lieferkette.
bereits bestehenden Schulungsinfrastruktur gesenkt.

3. Customer retention: With xlSO companies in the consumer
4. New revenue streams/increased turnover: the media sector,
for example, can profit from the sales of presence and virtual
and cost-efficient.
Role allocation
next, Jenewein explained to his fascinated audience the various
roles involved in external learning: first, the company itself.
Here, the xlSO administrator manages training via training catalogs,
invoicing and payments, prices, reports etc. the learner
belongs to the extended learning community: he books and pays
for training, reviews his learning status, works with training material,
takes and passes online tests. He can be tied to a company
profile. The trainer tests the training information via a consultant
portal and supervises training and graduation. the learning
manager manages training activities on behalf of participants
and tracks learning progress. Finally, the company administrator
manages the company profile data as well as learner relationships
and oversees sales data.
A real-life demonstration
“as a concrete demonstration of a way xlSO can be deployed
i would like to introduce a b2b scenario, which we believe will
be in strong demand,” Jenewein explained: an automotive service
company wants to train the workshop employees of partner
companies in a new, compulsory course. First, the employees
have to register and get an overview of the courses they have
to complete, for example on the subject of emission management.
after the individual payment process, the learner receives
a personalized work list, learns about quality management (for
example) and answers questions on the topic. the success of
the training is then tested and confirmed by a trainer. “Ad hoc
instructions or audits can also be done in this way,” the SaP
product manager explained.
Advantages at a glance
rounding off his presentation, Jenewein summarized the benefits
of the Extended Learning Solution xLSO:
• The company ensures quality and compliance through the
training of all members of the delivery chain.
• New products and services can be introduced to sales partners
more rapidly.
• The sale of course content to external learners provides new
revenue streams.
• The company profits from SAP’s experience in e-commerce
and best-practice processes.
• Total company costs are reduced through usage of an already
existing training infrastructure.
• Seamless integration of the solution in the company’s own SAP
environment reduces support requirements and increases
data quality.
Ungeahnte Möglichkeiten auf dem Gebiet Talent Management
eröffnet die Übernahme des amerikanischen Cloud-
Software-Herstellers SuccessFactors durch Europas
größten Software-Anbieter SAP. Denn es ist nicht nur ein Zusammenschluss
zweier Firmen, sondern auch eine Fusion
von On-demand-(Cloud-) und On-premise-Lösungen. Tuty
Was Softwarelösungen für Personaladministration,
SaP-konzern dazu. Dazu zählen Softwarelösungen für alle
personalpolitischen Maßnahmen, um Mitarbeiter zu gewinnen,
produktiv einzusetzen und langfristig zu binden. Dabei verfügt
SuccessFactors über zehn Jahre erfahrung im SaaS-bereich
Das beste aus beiden Welten
the best of both worlds
The takeover of American cloud software maker Success-
Factors by Europe’s largest software vendor, SAP, opened
up unforeseen opportunities in the area of talent management.
For this is not just a merger of two companies, but
also a fusion of on-demand (cloud) and on-premise solutions.
Tuty Hady, account executive at SuccessFactors,
showed in her presentation at the TTS Knowledge Transfer
Forum the advantages of these two worlds coming together.
the sales specialist opened her remarks with the words, “i don’t
have to tell you that SaP is the worldwide number one in core Hr
software.” SAP can look back on 40 years’ experience in software
solutions for personnel administration, payroll and accounts
and time management. Today, SAP looks after around 15,000
customers and is represented in 51 countries around the world.
Hady said that with the acquisition of SuccessFactors at the end
of 2011, SaP added the world’s number one in the area of talent
management and business execution software to its portfolio.
this includes software solutions for all personnel-political measures
to recruit, productively deploy and retain employees for
the long term. SuccessFactors also offers more than ten years’
experience in the SaaS (software as a service) environment, in
which software programs and data are hosted in the so-called
arbeitet.
so Hady abschließend.
“cloud” and transferred via internet to PC, laptop or cell phone.
SuccessFactors has some 3,500 customers and 15 million users
in 168 countries.
BizX changes strategies
“Success = Strategy + execution.” Hady explained the Success-
Factors motto: the best strategy is useless if you cannot implement
it. the business execution Suite (bizX Suite) from SaP/
SuccessFactors enables customers to set the right priorities, find
and develop the right people to execute the tasks and improve
processes. the catchphrase here is align, optimize and accelerate.
“Both … and” solutions
the merger of SaP and SuccessFactors means that users no
longer have to choose “either … or”. they can have “both …
and”. SuccessFactors adds the cloud solution bizX to the SaP
on-premise software programs for core Hr, payroll and time
management. it tackles goals, performance, workforce, planning,
recruitment, compensation, learning, succession together with
jamming (improvization sessions) and analytics via the cloud
(SaaS deployments). “We have customers who first selected just
the learning or performance solution. Others even use them in
combination with on-premise solutions.”
Hybrid deployment
the best of cloud and on-premise solutions are combined in a
mixed format, called hybrid deployment. “this brings together
the best of both worlds,” Hady said. “Over the coming months
we would like to improve the status quo, further optimizing the
application for the user and making it even easier.” in the end
the customer won’t even know if he is using a cloud or an onpremise
solution.”the objective is a rapid deployment solution,
in other words a preconfigured technology and consulting solution.”
this applies not just to the data but also to the processintegration.
Why cloud?
the reasons for using cloud in the HCM market are pretty obvious:
according to market analysts, HCM is a fast-growing area
and customers are on the lookout for high quality, simple software
solutions. Here are the advantages of cloud integration at
a glance:
• Rapid implementation
• Faster innovations
• Proven configuration
• High level of security
• No infrastructure and administration necessary
• As a result:
• Simple use
• Low total cost of ownership (TCO)
• Fast return on investment (ROI)
“We would like to send the following signal to customers: whatever
direction your strategy takes, we offer the right solution. integrating
both worlds works will not only work, it will work well,”
Hady concluded.
“To be honest, the user is only interested in
whether the solution works, regardless of whether
it’s now a cloud or on-premise solution.”
Thomas Brückner, Manager Product Development and Professional
Services, and TTS Executive Director Ulrich Ude
opened the “Knowledge Technologies” stream at the TTS
Knowledge Transfer Forum. While Brückner addressed current
software developments at the company, Ude presented
“E-Learning à la TTS”.
Four key ttS product innovations took centerstage in the presentation
by tom brückner:
• The Rollout Manager, an add-on package for TT Knowledge
Force, enables an automated data structure, its populating
with training processes and the depiction of business
processes. brückner called it “a very powerful tool”.
• TT Guide has been on the market since February 2011 and
executes in live applications. it thus takes the pressure off
the helpdesk. It has now been extended to Microsoft Office
2010 guides.
• The iPad Publisher is an exciting new product release, which
allows you to put tt knowledge Force-generated content on
the iPad.
• The Knowledge App is currently in the ramp-up phase. With
the help of this app, you can move courses that are
available to logged-on users from the course catalogue onto
“My Courses” via a personalized content distribution
mechanism. You can then access individual learning
learning“, so brückner.
ttS-geschäftsführer ulrich ude erläuterte anschaulich, was ein
differenzierte inhaltsarten schaffen (informieren – lernen – motivieren),
an uns abgeben möchte“.
nuggets offline. In background, this app communicates with
the ttS infrastructure and synchronizes with the computer,
so that (for example) the course catalog is always up to
date.
Challenges for mobile learning
according to brückner, there are some conceptual and technical
challenges ahead in the area of mobile learning. the question of
which content is right for the mobile and how it must be treated
(end-user experience) is a conceptual one. is it simply a matter
of playing back content, or can the specific functions of a mobile
device perhaps be usefully deployed in learning situations? “We
have already been busy with the topic of mobile learning for the
past couple of years,” brückner said. He is still not sure if this is
“only” a case of dealing with a new technology, or if we’re already
dealing with a whole new culture.
technically speaking, the question that comes to the fore is how
to get the content onto the devices with minimum effort, taming
the smart phone and tablet “device zoo”, thereby enabling offline
learning on the move, for example in the train or on the plane.
“You have to be able to use the devices without a reliable internet
connection.”
The characteristics of good e-learning
ttS executive Director ulrich ude vividly described what constitutes
good e-learning. it should on the one hand solicit the learner’s
interest and motivate; on the other hand, it should facilitate
structured learning and of course make information available. For
each type of content, there are other quality criteria for the structuring
of e-learning. Motivational content should excite attention
and should have a clear core message for the target group, succinct
and coherent in language, form and composition. For learning
content, a clear structure is the most important consideration,
combined with a variety of approaches, a learning-friendly environment,
intelligent substance that encourages and trains the
user, and transparent expectations of the user performance. informational
content must also be easy to find, clearly structured,
current, understandable, succinct and relevant. “Our tt guide
is a paradigm for learning information, because the question is
answered directly within the software,” explained ude.
Competent partner
TTS‘ objectives in the area of e-learning are clearly defined: to
create differentiated types of content (inform – learn – motivate),
provide high-quality needs-based content and reduce learning
and production costs. to support its customers further, ttS is
offering a scalable cooperation model, whereby e-learning capacity
can be entrusted to competent ttS specialists, with full
transparency as and when needed. “Within any project, the customer
can choose how much he does himself and what he would
like to pass over to us.”

Kulturwandel bei lgT group
culture change at the lgt group
diesem Banking System sollten 1.400 Benutzer weltweit arbeiten
the lgt group installed a group-wide learning platform within the company, striking a path towards
autonomous learning. training manager christian nigg revealed how the liechtenstein-based
company implemented this strategy.
The LGT Group is the largest private banking and asset management
group in Europe in family ownership – the princely
family of Liechtenstein. It brings together successful services
for investment advice, wealth management, credit and
financial instruments together with advice in areas such
as philanthropy and art. The Group’s 1,700 employees are
distributed across 20 locations worldwide. However, all IT
services are based in Bendern in the Principality of Liechtenstein.
Implementation of the banking system Avaloq Smart Client
the implementation of avaloq Smart Client was the critical event
driving the culture change towards autonomous learning. Some
1,400 users worldwide would need to work with this banking system.
However, there were a few obstacles to overcome: many
language, numerous locations and little time. the central training
team at lgt consisted of two people. Presence training courses,
as had been held previously, could not be carried out within a
sensible timeframe. “We had offered a few e-learning courses
in the past,” Christian nigg reported. “However, our employees
experienced a kind of technophobia and the whole subject was
viewed negatively.” How could an e-learning campaign for avaloq
function under such inauspicious circumstances?
„Bei uns kann heute jeder e-learnings erstellen.“
Gruppenweite Lernplattform etabliert
Sign-Off vornimmt. Danach erfolgt die Veröffentlichung auf der
lMS-Plattform.
Group-wide learning platform in place
the answer was to set up a group-wide learning platform, with
content provided on the initiative of its employees. instead of
buying the e-learning courses, the individual functional departments
would create them. “today, everybody working for us can
create e-learning courses,” nigg stressed. this meant that the
lgt group avoided the cost of a training infrastructure and could
moreover reduce trainer recruitment and travel costs. trainers
were identified in LGT’s own departments and trained accordingly.
to build the learning platform, the company invested in a
learning management system (lMS) whose content was created
with tt knowledge Force (ttkF). the presence training courses
still on offer were also posted in the lMS.
A basic structure for e-learning
to ensure a consistent look and feel, lgt established a basic
structure and authoring guidelines for the set up of e-learning
courses. the learning objects are divided into various chapters:
the title page with the defined learning objectives followed by
theory, simulations (which are recorded with ttkF) and tests. On
completion of the course, the user gets a report telling him what
he has learned and where he can find further information.
texts are as compact as possible; a broad white edge provides
space for clarifications with mouse-over effects. Simulations
similarly run automatically in full screen; the user is accompa-
nied and does not have to enter anything. in the course creation
process, functional areas and the training team take part:
the functional area determines the e-learning requirement and
names an author from the functional department. the latter is
then trained by the training team so that he knows how to create
the e-learning. Following a review of the content, the training
team takes charge of a didactic review, before the functional
department signs off on content and the training team on the
didactics. this is followed by publication on the lMS platform.
Successful set-up of the learning platform
the learning platform has now been successfully established
within the lgt group and enjoys a high level of acceptance
across the company. the positive effect on learning is measurable
through the number of queries – “there are hardly any” – and
because it is created by the departments, the amount of content
offered via the platform is increasing all the time. “Of course, it
is not possible to eliminate all objections,” nigg admitted. “but
the rollout of avaloq Smart Client was a success.” Meanwhile
the complete course catalogue, including presence learning
courses, has gone online and employees take care of their own
registration via the platform. “We will use e-learning only to accompany
the groupside rollout of Windows 7 and Office 2010,”
nigg concluded.
neue Lernformen anzubieten. Martin Raske, Global Head of
E-Learning Solutions, stellte die erarbeitete Lösung „Learning
Anywhere“ vor.
Bei der Credit Suisse sind rund 50.000 Mitarbeiter an 550 Standorten
in 50 Ländern beschäftigt. Ständig gibt es neue Richtlinien,
an die sich die Mitarbeiter halten müssen. Jeder muss wissen,
was er darf und was nicht, und zwar in allen 50 Ländern. Für
einen schnellen Wissenstransfer sorgen unter anderem e-learnings,
die über ein hauseigenes learning Management System
(LMS) gesteuert werden. „Jährlich werden bei der Credit Suisse
600.000 e-learnings aufgerufen“, verdeutlichte Martin raske
den umfang.
The training requirement at Credit Suisse increases all the
time – as does the wish to learn not just at the workplace
but also at home or while traveling. Talent Development at
the global financial services company therefore faced the
challenge to offer new ways to learn. Martin Raske, Global
Head of e-Learning Solutions, presented the “Learning Anywhere”
solution developed by Credit Suisse.
Credit Suisse employs around 50,000 people at 550 locations
in 50 countries. There are always new guidelines that these employees
have to follow. everyone must know what he can and
cannot do – and this applies in all 50 countries. E-learning is
one of the ways the company ensures rapid knowledge transfer,
managed with a proprietary learning management system (lMS).
Martin raske indicated the scope of e-learning. “Credit Suisse
employees access e-learning 600,000 times annually,” he said.
Anforderungen an Trainings wachsen
abrufen. Die Credit Suisse möchte jedoch einen Überblick
darüber haben, was gelernt wurde. „Kurz gesagt: Wir wollen
tracken“, so raske.
Open Source System ILIAS musste gewisse Voraussetzungen
Growing demands on training
Demands on staff development and training grow all the time.
You can do a lot with presence training, but you can’t cover all
bases. Some content can only be transmitted via electronic media.
knowledge transfer via e-learning is a further option, but not
always the best. learning with multimedia programs on your PC
is not always ideal in an open plan environment – there is noise
and other distractions when what you really need is peace and
quiet! Consequently, many employees decided they would prefer
to learn at home rather than at the workplace.
Difficulties incorporating learning in the bank structure
Mobile learning also makes it possible for employees to learn
while they are traveling: for example while waiting for a flight in
the airport lounge or in the train on the way home; you can even
quickly call up the most important information while in the car on
the way to a client. However, Credit Suisse would like to have
an overview of what’s being learnt. “in short, we want to track
things,” raske said. this means that mobile learning would have
to be integrated within the bank’s structure – no easy undertaking.
In 2006 they started their first pilot project with a multimedia
advent Calendar for mobile phones. based on the experiences
acquired on this project, which did not require bank-relevant
content, the technical department analyzed what would be required
to integrate such applications into the bank’s structure.
“unfortunately, the necessary budget was not made available,”
raske reported. in spring 2011 they started another pilot project,
before the “learning anywhere” platform could be introduced a
year later.
Learning anywhere with Credit Suisse
in order to embrace the requirements of mobile learning and, at
the same time, to ensure compliance with the bank’s security
guidelines, Credit Suisse set up an LMS outside the firewall. The
ilaS open source software that they chose for this purpose had
to fulfill certain preconditions, such as the communication with
lMS (synchronization), mobile access to the platform and social
learning. the entire training catalog is now available to employees
on the “learning anywhere” mobile learning home page. all
e-learning programs are branded and the mobile applications are
color-coded. the synchronization of learning anywhere and the
corporate computer system means that nothing is lost: the catalogue
is always up-to-date. “With learning anywhere we have
also established social learning at Credit Suisse and enabled
employees to learn at home or while traveling.”
“Our learning nuggets are totally in the spirit of the times.”
in rund 60 Ländern. Inklusive seiner Vertriebspartner
Short and sweet:
an approach to e-learning production
Robert Bosch GmbH built its own production site for webbased
training (WBT) in Bangalore, India. The “educational
tour” to a virtual training platform continues. Jürgen Rentschler,
Divya Mishra und Henning Weber took the Forum audience
along for a part of the journey.
the bosch group is a leading international company focused on
automobile, industrial and construction technologies and consumer
durables. In its financial year 2011, more than 300,000
Bosch employees generated revenues of € 51.4 billion. The
company is active in three business divisions with more than
350 subsidiaries and regional companies in some 60 countries
worldwide. When you add in its sales partners, bosch is represented
in more than 150 countries. With such an international
presence, it is important that the company is on the spot, there,
where the partners are, and understands the customers and the
market.
A “one-stop-shop” for virtual training
At first, the intention was to develop and produce WBTs quickly
in order to acquire process and IT qualifications in a multinational
company like bosch. Consequently, bosch set up a Wbt production
site in india, which functions as a “one-stop-shop” for
virtual training. Herbert Weber, leader of the project at bosch,
stressed that “for a fast and agile development of Wbts, four factors
are of critical importance:
52
„wir verfügen über eine junge und erfahrene
Belegschaft.“
DIVYA MISHRA
„In Indien
ist zudem das größte entwicklungszentrum außerhalb Deutschlands
angesiedelt“, berichtet Jürgen rentschler, Head of Project
globale Lernplattform „Bosch Learning Space“ gelten: Weiterbildungen
Solution realisiert. „So können wir sicherstellen, dass die
Web-based trainings stets dem aktuellen Stand entsprechen“.
1. teamwork, as opposed to lone wolves – small learning
objects rather than long, boring training sessions
2. an agile approach – rough outline planning followed by quick,
small, frequent iterations; think in terms of target state and
versions
3. a global network tests the results rather than individual
experts
4. Don’t wait to show the finished product. Instead,
communicate transparently from planning to implementation
(“glasshouse production”… “coming soon”)
Challenges for training material
the training material offered globally for continuous professional
development initiatives should be available to all employees regardless
of time and place, in the language of the user. and it
should be up to date and affordable. the small learning objects
are there to impart basic knowledge, they are easy to understand
and include explanatory graphics. bosch chose india as
the central location for the development and production of Wbts
– a booming industrial nation producing more than 750,000 university
graduates each year and a good infrastructure. bosch
has been active in india since 1922. the number of employees
grew in the past 12 years to more than 24,000. This workforce
is young but at the same time experienced. “Moreover, india has
the largest development center outside germany,” according to
Jürgen rentschler, Head of automotive Project Standardization
Processes at bosch. bosch chose tt knowledge Force as its
technology platform.
Bosch Learning Space emerges from TTS Web Publisher
Following careful planning, bosch established some principles
for its global learning platform, “bosch learning Space”.
the training process starts with Wbt; this is a precondition for
participation in webinars, which then serve to reach a certain
level. Only when they reach this level can the employees visit
more advanced presence training. “bosch learning Space” can
be viewed from six perspectives: via language, role, process,
course, content and search. There are currently more than 1500
Wbts posted, all of them created with tt knowledge Force.
“and the same rules apply to all of them: we create short and
sweet learning objects, lasting a maximum of 15 minutes, we
separate descriptions of methods from it, split content up into
various levels, visualize a lot and we always aim for simplicity of
construction.” this is how Divya Mishra described the approach
to building WBTs, which, believe it or not, are available in 18 languages.
On average, the 150-member team creates, localizes
and updates up to 100 Wbts per month. the whole project will
run initially until 2014.
Always up to date
in the (further) development of Wbts, the team took account
of several factors. “bosch learning Space” functions as a onestop-shop
platform where the Wbts are published. users can
provide their feedback on individual learning objects, and this is
incorporated in later development. a glossary explains the most
important keywords. in future, it will also be possible to obtain
the number of hits on the learning platform together with data
analysis via web-trends. A link-checker verifies active hyperlinks.
later, the learning space will link to an SaP learning Solution. “in
this way we can make sure that the Wbts are always completely
up to date.”
“We have a young and experienced workforce.”
„and the WiT-award goes to...“
an f. hoffmann-la roche. ralph borer, head of iT Training solution, nahm den preis
stellvertretend für sein Team entgegen.
thorsten Schurig, key account manager at ttS, presented this year’s wit award to
f. hoffmann-laroche. ralph Borer, head of it training Solutions, accepted the prize on
behalf of his team.
65.000 Endanwender in zwölf Monaten
in ihrem unternehmen tun“, so Schurig zu ralph borer, Head of
Flankierend
waren informationsveranstaltungen, die nutzung von
e-learning nuggets und Change-Management-Maßnahmen geplant.
This year’s WiT Award went to F. Hoffmann-La Roche. With
this prize, TTS honors the company that has driven structured
knowledge transfer in an exceptional way. The distinction
was given for the fourth time at the TTS Knowledge
Transfer Forum: previous winners were Conrad Electronics,
E.ON and Novartis.
65,000 end-users in twelve months
“You are receiving the Wit award because you don’t lose sight
of your employees and do everything for knowledge transfer in
your company.” So said torsten Schuring to ralph borer, Head
of it training Solutions at F. Hoffmann-laroche, who accepted
the prize. F. Hoffmann-la roche has been a customer of ttS
since the year 2000. in 2010, the company planned the global
rollout of Windows 7/Office 2010 – for 65,000 employees in just
12 months. For this demanding project, the company required
some support from ttS. the idea was that tt knowledge Force
would be used as an employee performance support system and
the end-users would be able to get context-sensitive help within
the application via Quick Access. This would be accompanied by
information events, the use of e-learning content nuggets and
change-management initiatives.
55
56
„F. Hoffmann-La Roche forderte die TTS in allen
Business Units.“
E-Learning is Dead. Long live E-Learning!
82.000 Mitarbeiter erwirtschafteten
im letzten Jahr 42 Milliarden CHF Umsatz, über 21 Millionen
Patienten werden mit Produkten des Schweizer unternehmens
betreut. „Innovation treibt uns an“, so Borer.
‚read and understood’.“ Das Trainingsteam bei Roche umfasst
analyze – Design – Develop – implement – evaluate. besonderes
blogs, Wikis etc.
5. Mobil werden:
Bei Roche sind 15.000 iPads im Umlauf. Viele davon sind Einzelgeräte,
die Programme müssen also darauf laufen.
6. Trennung von Inhalt und Format:
kleine, wiederverwertbare Module.
7. Personalisierung:
Rolle und Lerninhalt in Verbindung setzen. Jeder soll das Training
bekommen, das er braucht.
“We had the challenge to get QuickAccess up and running for
65,000 end-users,” Thorsten Schurig reported. However, the entire
project ran very successfully. ttS is now working to set up
the SaP learning Solution globally for F. Hoffmann-la roche’s
global operations.
E-learning is dead. Long live e-learning!
ralph borer gave sincere thanks and then showed how e-learning
will be positioned at roche in future. F. Hoffmann-la roche
is a globally active pharma concern and a manufacturer of reagents
and medical diagnostic equipment. it is based in basel,
Switzerland. Last year, its 82,000 employees produced revenues
of CHF 42 billion and more than 21 million patients were treated
with the company’s products.
“innovation drives us forward,” borer said. in 2011, roche spent
CHF 116 million on employee development and an average of 26
training-hours per employee. “there are around 220,000 training
objects stored in our global learning management system,
the majority of them can be termed “read and understood”. the
roche training team has six employees, with borer the team
leader. this team develops all training materials and concepts.
“but we don’t deliver this training,” he stressed. the offer includes
presence and virtual training as well as e-learning. When
creating e-learning material, the company follows the aDDie
model: analyze-Design-Develop-implement-evaluate. Particular
attention is paid to the country-specifications in the implementation
and evaluation stages.
The eight steps to perfect e-learning
In order to configure e-learning appropriately, Borer and his team
have implemented an eight-step strategy, to be completed by the
first quarter of 2013.
1. Basic requirement:
Put in place a global training network. Pool resources, in order
to tackle topics together. utilize a learning management system
(lMS) and standard e-learning software. Develop guidelines and
best practices.
2. Motivate:
bring people on board where they are. end-users must be able
to use applications correctly, but the learning strategies can vary.
Weave a story into e-learning objects.
3. Results:
Manage context-sensitive portals on a shared lMS.
4. Interactive:
understand e-learning as a dialog. experience has showed that
the majority is generally right. Make use of social media such as
blogs, wikis etc.
5. Embrace mobility:
At Roche, there are 15,000 iPads in use. Many of them are stand-
alone devices. the programs therefore have to run on them. .
6. Separation of content and format:
Small, reusable modules.
7. Personalization:
Connect role and content. everyone should get the training s/
he needs.
8. Create an attractive learning architecture – otherwise you
won’t get Homo Zappiens on board:
Motivate, share knowledge and demand knowledge exchange.
borer and his team are currently engaged in the implementation.
they have great expectations that this strategy will allow them
to offer modern and appropriate e-learning in future. “and who
„ich bin schon sehr oft beim ttS knowledge transfer
forum gewesen. es ist sehr beeindruckend, wie
sich dieses forum von der teilnehmerstruktur her
entwickelt hat. mittlerweile ist es eine etablierte
veranstaltung in deutschland zum thema wissensmanagement
und zum thema Bildung und lernen,
von daher kommt mittlerweile die community aus
diesem Bereich hier in heidelberg zusammen, und
das zeichnet das forum aus.“
“I have already been to the TTS Knowledge Transfer
Forum many times. It is very impressive how this
Forum has developed in line with the participant
profile. By now it has become an established event
in Germany on the themes of knowledge transfer and
education and learning, which is why the community
working in this environment comes to Heidelberg – a
distinction for the Forum.”
Manuel Egger, Head of HR Solutions, sovanta AG
“I like the exchange with other people. I have noticed
that our concerns are not unique to us. I value the
discussions in the Forum very highly.”
Christan Nigg, IT Training Manager,
LGT Financial Services AG
“As someone who does not come from the learning
and development environment, I find it very exciting,
the way the topics are formulated and put into
an overall context with overarching themes from the
entire personnel function.”
Manuel Hugentobler, Executive Director/Head Strategic HR
“The Forum is a sector meeting-place with quite varied
fields of discussion. One aspect that I find good
is the knowledge transfer: best practices can be exchanged
here onsite between customers. The other
aspect is the networking: meeting customers and
partners. This what distinguishes the Forum here in
this delightful atmosphere in Heidelberg.”
Thomas Jenewein, Solution Owner KPS-SAP Education,
SAP AG
various companies and people who are interested in
similar topics”
Bereich.“
“Alongside the usual interesting presentations and
the knowledge-exchange I always find the keynote
fascinating, also this year’s lecture by Wim Veen. The
keynote provides a stimulus for mapping out the company’s
future directions in this area.”
“It is really pleasant exchanging ideas with other
companies and speaking with various personnel
development departments about current
trends and developments in talent management
and e-learning. These are all burning issues that
are keeping us very busy. The ambience in this
modern setting is very forward-looking, and this
is also precisely the direction in which we are
heading with the topical content of this forum.”
Matej Vonasek, Leiter Abteilung Ausbildung,
“I especially like the fact that I get a one-off view into
the civilian world and see how other large enterprises
deal with the challenges of e-learning. I hope to
draw many conclusions from this in my own work.”
“At this Forum, I am delighted to be able to engage
“I like to come to the Forum every year. On the one
hand, because I find the venue is great here, the right
setting for such an event. On the other hand, because I
can exchange ideas and views with like-minded people
and always get new input for my own work. On top of
that I always find out the latest news from TTS.”
