GESIS Technical Report 2011|06 901
Abstract: "This paper reports some of the central findings of a cross-sectional analysis
of determinants of trade union membership in West-Germany. Representative
surveys are available for the periods 1976 to 1979 and 1980 to 1984. The results of a
logistic regression model are represented separatly for each period. Size of firm, union
membership of works councillors and employment in puplic services were found
to be important 'context variables' which influence an individual's propensity to join
the union. Other variables such as sex, education, and political partisanship (Green
Party) also have a significant influence on trade union membership and are disccussed
here in detail." Aus dem kumulierten ALLBUS 1980-1986 werden Daten der
Jahre 1980, 1982 und 1984 genutzt
Winkler, Jürgen R., (1999). Explaining Individual Racial Prejudice in Contemporary
Germany. S. 93- 136, in: Hagendoorn, Louk und Nekuee, Shervin (Hrsg.), Education
and Racism. A cross national inventory of positive effects of education on ethnic tolerance.
Abstract: "This paper proposes a structural explanation of racial attitudes, presents
the empirical evidence for it, explores racial prejudice and examines its causes. I assume
that the level of racial prejudice depends upon five main causes that are analysed
in the following sections. In the section 'Racial prejudice: measuring, development
and demography', I address the question how to measure racial prejudice, distinguishing
its various forms and levels. I then analyse the development of two of
these over the last decade, and give a summary of the socio-demography of intergroup
attitudes in contemporary Germany. Using factor analysis, I define a general
measure of racial prejudice and distinguish six dimensions of negative attitudes towards
ethnic minorities. Building upon previous empirical and theoretical work, several
determinants of racial prejudice are discussed and analysed in the section
'Determinants of racial prejudice'. I deal first with the influence of economic and
cultural variables and describe the perceived position of individuals in society. I then
examine the effects of more stable personality variables on racial prejudice, and I
suggest a new construct as a main determinant of racial attitudes. A brief investigation
into the contact hypotheses is followed by a discussion of the role of education.
In the section 'A model explaining racial prejudice' I develop a more explicit and
complete model of racial prejudice, and relate racial prejudice to measure of sociodemographic
variables including education, perceived socio-cultural circumstances, a
more stable personality pattern, contact intensity, and perception of outgroups. This
new view is offered as an alternative to existing methods of studying prejudice towards
ethnic groups. The data analysed here is based on the 1996 ALLBUS survey
