Gruppen und entwickeln eine allgemeine Teststatistik zum Vergleich von Mittelwerten.
Darauf aufbauend wird das Verfahren für den Vergleich beliebig vieler Gruppen
erweitert (einfaktorielle ANOVA). Schließlich betrachten wir den Fall multipler unabhängiger
Variablen (mehrfaktorielle ANOVA) sowie die Kontrolle von kontinuierlichen
Kovariaten (Kovarianzanalyse). Vor allem den Voraussetzungen zur Durchführung
der Varianz- und Kovarianzanalyse soll dabei ein besonderer Stellenwert
eingeräumt werden. Der erste Teil endet mit einer Einführung in die Effektstärkenberechnung
und die darauf basierende Berechnung der Teststärke. Der zweite Teil 'mathematisch-statistische
Grundlagen' richtet sich an den methodisch interessierten Leser.
In diesem Abschnitt wird die Varianz- und Kovarianzanalyse aus dem Blickwinkel
des Allgemeinen Linearen Modells (ALM) betrachtet. Es wird gezeigt, wie mittels
der Dummy- bzw. Effektkodierung klassische varianzanalytische Fragestellungen
im Rahmen des ALMs analysiert werden können. Der Schwerpunkt dieses Abschnitts
liegt auf den Vorteilen des ALM gegenüber der klassischen AN(C)OVA. Im
dritten Teil illustrieren wir alle vorgestellten Analysemöglichkeiten anhand mehrerer
Beispiele auf Basis der Allgemeinen Bevölkerungsumfrage der Sozialwissenschaften
(ALLBUS). Das Kapitel endet mit einer kurzen Checkliste zur Durchführung der
Varianz- und Kovarianzanalyse und zur Vermeidung häufig gemachter Fehler."

Abstract: "The transformation of social democratic parties can only be understood
from a perspective that takes both social transformations 'external' to the party and
discussion processes within the party into account. It is shown that social democracy
in Britain and Germany can neither act independently from their social bases nor do
the social bases entirely determine the fortunes of both parties. The internal transformations
of Labour in Britain and the SPD in Germany are conceived of as a series
of attempts to revise the current party agenda resulting in decisions that resolve these
debates. The causes of a revisionist attempt are located outside the party in terms of
social, economical, cultural and political developments that result in a transformation
of attitudes in the electorate. Revisionism seeks to bring the party into line with these
changes, and the electoral appeal of a party resulting from revisionism along with the
attitude dispositions within the electorate decide about the electoral fortunes of social
democratic parties. This argument is outlined and tested with respect to the cases
Germany and Britain. The transformation of both parties and the relation to their
social bases are accounted for through a contextual analysis of debates within the
party along with the according social, attitudinal and institutional change. The attitudinal
changes in the electorate, their relation to the social structure of a society and
the electoral fortunes of both social democratic parties are explored through an analysis
