Rohrschneider, Robert, (1999). Learning Democracy. Democratic and Economic
Values in Unified Germany. Comparative European Politics. Oxford, New York:
Oxford University Press.
Abstract: "The book contributes to several debates. On a practical level, it documents
the difficulty of merging the two parts of Germany into one truly unified nation. Because
it is the first comprehensive study to examine several democratic values that
are vital to the operation of a democratic system and a market economy, the book
indicates where Germans drifted apart and where they actually converged over time.
Although western Germans dominate the vast majority of institutions in Germany,
the persisting East-West differences over ideological values have important consequences
for the political process. The debate over constitutional changes at the federal
and state levels displays these value differences, as does the success of the reformed
socialist party - the PDS - in eastern Germany." Rohrschneider verwendet für
seine Analysen neben selbst erhobenen Daten (MP-Survey) u.a. den ALLBUS 1991
und 1994 sowie das Eurobarometer
Rohrschneider, Robert, (2000). Transition Democracies: The East/West German
Model. Conference "Re-Thinking Democracy in the New Millenium": Houston, Texas.
Abstract: "Germany's division after 1945 and its unification in 1990 offer a fascinating
opportunity to study the formation of political values: to what extent are citizens'
democratic values affected by their authoritarian and democratic regime experience?[...]
Because it is difficult to insulate the net influence of regime experience
on democratic values in diverse national contexts, there is a great deal of uncertainty
about the degree to which socialist regimes shaped citizens' democratic values. By
using the quasi-laboratory conditions in Germany, we are able to shed light on this
issue in a twofold way. First, we examine the democratic views of eastern and western
Germans shortly after Germany's unification in 1990. This provides a baseline of
the long-term effects of the two different regimes on individuals' values. Further, by
analyzing how quickly eastern Germans' political views adapt to the new system, we
use the development of eastern citizens' democratic values since unification to analyze
whether the establishment of a new regime alters the political values of eastern
Germans.[...] Overall, this research points to the centrality of democratic values as
one important source of institutional legitimacy." Bei der Frage ob und wie verschiedenartige
demokratische Visionen einen Einfluss auf die Zufriedenheit der Bürger
mit ihrem institutionellen System haben greift Rohrschneider auf Daten des
ALLBUS 1998 zurück: "We also suggested that the different democratic visions
influence how satisfied citizens are with the existing institutional framework. But is
our explanation supported when other sources of ideological values and evaluations
of institutions are considered simultaniously, especially perceptions of economic
