Abstract: "The linkages between religion and electoral behaviour are undoubtedly
complex in most European countries and the German case is no exception. We can
use three different approaches and themes in analysing the questions that inevitably
arise. Each of these may be considered to be relevant to the key question of secularisation,
and each is relevant to the linkage between religion and electoral behaviour.
First, it can be hypothesised that, if society itself is becoming more secularised, then
elections and the behaviour of electors will also be more secularised. The example
developed below, of the German Democratic Republic, bears this out to some degree.
Second, independent of whether society itself is becoming more secularised, if the
political agenda is more secular than before, then it is likely that voting decisions will
be taken less on the basis of denomination or religion, and more on other grounds.
Third, the electorate itself in its predispositions may be more secular. Independent of
whether voters attend church regularly, independent even of the political agenda, past
party loyality or links between parties and the churches, voters may be inclined increasingly
to make their voting decision on other than religious grounds: 'rational'
voting, or class- or regional-based voting decisions or the images of party leaders
may well be acquiring more significance for the structure of voting patterns. It is
important to note of course that any or all of these three factors may be overlapping

frauen- und entwicklungspolitischer NRO vor, die den nationalen Umsetzungsprozess
der Aktionsplattform von Peking reflektiert und mit konkreten politischen Empfehlungen
zu einer konstruktiven und kooperativen Weiterführung des Überprüfungsprozesses
anregen möchte. Darüber hinaus sollte sie als Beitrag für eine besseren
Zusammenarbeit und einen transparenten und vor allem regelmäßig stattfindenden
Dialog zwischen Regierung und Nichtregierungsorganisationen im Bereich von
Frauenpolitik und zu Genderfragen verstanden werden." Die Einstellung der Bundesdeutschen
Bevölkerung zum Thema Abtreibung wurde anhand des ALLBUS
1996 ermittelt.
