David Sedaris:
Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk.
A Wicked Bestiary. UK 2010, 163 pp.
illustrated, hardbound, € 13.20
If animals were more like
us, if mice kept pets
and toads could cuss, if
dogs had wives and chipmunks
dated, sheep sat
still and meditated, then
in the forest, field and
diary, you might find this
bestiary, read by storks,
but rats and kitties, skimmed
by cows with milkstained
titties. »I found the book to be most
droll«, might quip the bear, the owl, the mole.
Others, though, would be more coarse. »Bull«,
could say the pig and horse. As to the scribe,
they‘d quote the hen: »Trust me, he‘s no La Fontaine.«
- These poems by the most popular (and
gay - one might add) American humorist since
Woody Allen are strangely soothing eccentricities
with an impeccable comic timing - they are
illustrated by Ian Falconer - the illustrator of the
Olivia series of children‘s books.
Patrick Gale: Gentleman‘s Relish.
UK 2010, 264 pp., brochure, € 10.99
Patrick Gale‘s new collection
of stories combines
wit and poignancy to illuminate
experiences both
common and uncommon.
Love (and loathing)
within families are dissected:
a father makes
an unexpected discovery
about his son which is
too hard to cope with.
A son wreaks revenge through the power of
cookery. Three generations of the same family
gain freedom through the years in a once-despised
caravan. A bored wife finds happiness
when an old lad teaches her the art of angling.
A dog-training lesson with a puppy who hasn‘t
grasped the meaning of obedience leads to the
discovery of a murder. Here too are music and
silence: the sweetness and sadness of Festivals,
of the church, and of the control exercised
by those in charge in small communities. What
unites these stories, though, is their humour,
compassion, and hope.
Håkan Lindquist:
My Brother and His Brother.
Transl. by Håkan Lindquist.
D 2011, 173 S., Broschur, € 15.37
This is a novel about two
brothers. The story is told
by one of them, Jonas, an
18-year-old boy. Throughout
his teenage years
he has been trying to get
an image of Paul, the
brother he never met, a
brother who died at the
age of 16, the year before
Jonas himself was born.
The story is told like a crime story, with loose
ends, clues and cliffhangers. In his search for
his brother, Jonas soon finds out that Paul had
an intense love affair with another boy during
the last year of his life. This love affair is described
in a few chapters in the middle of the novel.
»My Brother and His Brother« received critical
acclaim when it first appeared in Sweden, and
soon new editions followed as well as several
translations into German, French, and Italian.
