muss auch einen klaren Aktualitätsbezug besitzen. Im
Jahr 2007 wurde eine schon seit langem im Fachausschuss
der Norm verlangte Maßnahme in die DIN EN
1177 aufgenommen. Die Neuerung besagt, dass die
Prüfgeräte mindestens jährlich neu kalibriert werden
müssen, da sich in der Vergangenheit gezeigt hat, dass die
Ergebnisse verschiedener Prüfungen zueinander stark abgewichen
sind. Alle vor dem Jahre 2008 datierten Prüfergebnisse
sind also möglicherweise mit diesem Mangel
behaftet. Bei Zweifeln sollte der Anbieter dahingehend
befragt werden.
Herkunft und Lebensdauer hinterfragen
Nicht nur die Gültigkeit des Fallschutznachweises ist ein
wichtiges Qualitätsmerkmal fugenloser Fallschutzböden.
Wesentlich sind auch Material und Verarbeitung. Vor allem
sollte das gesamte Bodensystem eine Umweltverträglichkeitsprüfung
oder einen vergleichbaren Nachweis
über die Auswaschung von gesundheits- oder umweltgefährdenden
Stoffen besitzen. Denn die eingesetzten Materialien,
obwohl augenscheinlich gleich, können sich in
dieser Hinsicht stark voneinander unterscheiden. Die
Granulate der Basisschicht können unterschiedlicher
Herkunft sein, die bunten EPDM-Granulate der Nutzschicht
können aus unterschiedlichen Basismaterialien
bestehen und die verarbeiteten Bindemittel können
Emissionsgrenzen überschreiten – oder eben nicht.
Neben dem Umwelt- und Gesundheitsschutz ist das verwendete
Material wesentlich für die Belastungsfähigkeit
und Lebensdauer des Bodens. Leider lässt sich die Qualität
des Bodens in dieser Hinsicht vor dem Einbau nur
schwer überprüfen. Lediglich die Beschaffenheit des farbigen
EPDM-Materials gibt einen Hinweis. Es sollte voll
durchgefärbtes Neugummigranulat sein. Farbiges EPDM

Quality features of
seamless safety flooring
REPORT
At first glance, seamless fall-protection floorings, which
have enjoyed increasing popularity in the past few years, all
look the same. BSW, one of the leading suppliers, estimates
that for 2009, an area of around 50,000 square meters of
flooring was laid in Germany, trending upwards.
Appearances of new floorings can be deceptive however,
as among the suppliers of these products, some companies
have appeared who do not take quality as seriously as they
perhaps should. It is often not easy for planners and architects
to determine which quotes are worth the money and
which are not. So what are the criteria which characterise a
safe and sufficiently long-lasting seamless safety flooring?

The most important property of a seamless safety flooring is, logically,
its fall protection. Every flooring which lays a claim to this
description, should have a corresponding fall protection value. Or so
you would think. Unfortunately many cases prove just the opposite.
Every synthetic protective flooring requires a critical maximum fall
height confirmed by an independent testing institute as per the standard
DIN EN 1177:2008. Only those flooring systems with a fall
height test based on laboratory tests can be considered reliable, as only
these tests provide comparative values to other tests by the same or another
manufacturer. Instead, results from research tests or according
to out-of-date standards (e.g. DIN EN 1177:1997) are sometimes offered.
This is, however, not admissible and cannot be submitted as
proof for the fall height of a whole product range. In many cases, this
kind of test is included in test reports from test institutes as “evidence
of conformity”. They do not confirm compliance with fall protection
requirements of the flooring installed however, as the manufacturer is
not obliged to install the flooring in the same way as it was submitted
for testing. Later changes with regard to design, installation height and
material consistency do not need to be reported to the test laboratory.
In theory, therefore, seamless safety flooring could be installed, which
has fall protection values deviating from those shown in the research
tests. For this reason: Only test reports and certificates as per DIN EN
1177:2008, based on comparable laboratory tests are acceptable.
Testing is not always testing
Manufacturers who cannot provide this kind of test report for the
product offered, should be excluded as suppliers as they cannot provide
binding proof of the protective fall height of their product.
In the case of a legal dispute after an accident where damages can be
blamed on insufficient fall protection, it is possible that the architect,
planner or operator can be held liable along with the manufacturer or
distributor of the fall protection flooring.
But that’s not all: A test certificate as per DIN EN 1177:2008 must
also have a clear reference to the actual state. In 2007, a new measure,
demanded already for some time by the standards technical
committee, was incorporated into the standard DIN EN 1177.
