Fitness trail for generations –
In the “Bajuwarenpark”
housing project in Munich
Outdoor fitness trail and exercising space for young
and old on your doorstep.
Everyone knows what it’s like: You arrive home after a long
day at work. Your back is hurting, head and legs are tired.
“Now off to the gym still, or going out with the family – or
simply staying at home!?” The 4Fcircle fitness trail offers
planners, architects and building contractors an exercising
idea that will remedy this dilemma.
The 4Fcircle fitness trail is an innovative, integrative exercising concept
for public spaces. Designed for communal greens and city parks, this
30-station equipment system, developed by the Munich Technical University
and the Munich Department of Sport in cooperation with the
Playparc GmbH, is also ideally suited for urban development landscape
architects’ project planning.
Spending as much time as possible outdoors remains a popular way of
leaving the daily stress behind and ridding the body of unhealthy environmental
influences. The objective of the project partners in developing
the 4Fcircle fitness trail was to put the weary limbs into motion in order
to enhance balance, strength, flexibility and reaction speed.
Bajuwarenpark housing project
The result of this development has been admired and experienced in the
Trudering suburb of Munich since the summer of 2008: This renowned
“Bajuwarenpark” housing project now boasts the port of call for exercise
and outdoor enthusiasts (Marianne-Plehn-Straße, 81825 Munich). This
equipment system, designed for public places, was created there by the
property developer “Bayerische Hausbau” and the responsible landscape
architect Werner Franz from Munich. 15 stations have been individually
created here as an “outdoor fitness trail” for the residents near and visitors
to the facility.
The 4 “f’s” which stand for “fit, free, fun, function” are to be taken literally:
Children, juveniles, adults and senior citizens can train their basic
motor abilities here on coordination and strength equipment, improving
flexibility, coordination and strength/stamina in an entertaining and fun
environment. As a meeting point for young and old in the immediate
home environment of the user, the 4Fcircle trail intends to do away with
the “compulsory” character of exercising and sport activities and to emphasise
the fun of it.
Health care is important to all generations. Together with nutrition, outdoor
exercise is one of the most important prerequisites for a healthy, long
and self-sufficient life. The demographic change to an older and leisureoriented
society presents new challenges for public area design. Public
spaces generally offer too little in the way of generation-spanning exercising
options based on sports science, especially around large housing
complexes.
Under the “Bajuwarenpark fitness trail” pilot project, important
demands for open spaces around housing complexes, serving as meaningful
leisure and exercising areas, were harmonised with the fitness
requirements of an active, but also ageing population.
