Playing with the
Deutsche Annington
Children have been playing in the large Kompan playground
since the year 2000. This playground was created by the
Deutsche Annington Immobilien Gruppe in the urban district
of Mengede, in Dortmund’s northwest.
The urban district of Mengede in Dortmund is characterised by single
to two family houses and small privately-owned old mining houses
from mining times past. Approx. 38 000 inhabitants of mixed age
groups and from different origins and social backgrounds live in this district.
Children and youngsters up to 15 years of age make up about
14.4%.
The high percentage of children and lack of public playing facilities in
the vicinity motivated the Deutsche Annington to have a playground
developed right here. With about 217 000 rented and administrated
apartments and a staff complement in excess of 1 000, the Deutsche
Annington Immobilien Group is one of Germany’s leading housing
companies ; managing approx. 1 200 units in the Mengede district.
The playground in the Walter-Schücking-Strasse was developed about
10 years ago, following Deutsche Annington‘s refurbishment programme
in the Hansemann residential area. Many children can play
together and enjoy the open air on this 7 000 m2 playground.
The Kompan playground has a very open layout and is accessible
and open to view from three sides. The playground
equipment is arranged according to the children’s age
profile, thus offering two playing areas. The area for
younger children has a seesaw, a small downhill
slide, a sand table and a rocking-spring animal.
The area for the older children and the juveniles
has climbing equipment, the supernova, a swinging
beam and a basketball hoop. There are a
few benches for children’s supervisors and for
the children themselves who need a break. In the
centre is a large green space for general play or
for picnics. A large container in the area for
smaller children contains various playing accessories
and also benches and tables which are sometimes
used for the suburb festival around the
playground. Trees and shrubs complete the playground.Toddlers
and juveniles use this playground,
predominantly over weekends. The
Mengender Ferienspaß e.V. sponsors this
playground and also uses it regularly, together
with the children. The children
from the nearby speech therapy
nursery school also play here regularly.
Overall, this playground with a
minimum of equipment offers a wide
age group exercise and play in the
open air, in an area with few alternatives.
The large area also enables
the grounds to be used for other activities
and for public events.
