in New York, London, Mailand, Istanbul, Sydney, Miami,
Felder Felder, Kavia Gauche, A.F.
gestalten.
Der Berliner Designer Kilian Kerner ist stolz.
Seine diesjährige Präsentation im Zelt der
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin ist die
Zehnte in Folge.
lachend. Eine Hass-Liebe, die der Marke offensichtlich
gut getan hat. Seit seinem Laufsteg-
Debüt in der Hauptstadt 2008 hat sich sein
Label zum festen Bestandteil der deutschen
Modeszene gemausert. Mehr noch: seine Premiumlinie
Kilian Kerner und die Zweit linie
Kilian Kerner Senses verkaufen sich in über
100 Läden in 14 Ländern.
„Ich habe viel Aufmerksamkeit bekommen,
weil ich auf der Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
Berlin zeige“, ist Kerner überzeugt. 2010 sagte
die Grande Dame des Modejournalismus',
Suzy Menkes, über ihn: „I (also) see Kilian
Kerner as very resourceful“.
„Erzähl mir wie Du heißt – A story
about sculpture and human being“.
400 Lagen Chiffon. Überhaupt sei alles skulpturaler
geworden und extremst aufwändig.
„Kilian Kerner eben – aber neu.“
Berlin designer Kilian Kerner is proud. His
show in January’s mercedes-Benz fashion
Week will be his tenth, a milestone he considers
a victory, given that there’s hardly a more
polarizing fashion figure around town. “There
are some real Kilian Kerner haters, as well as
people who absolutely love my work,” he says
with a laugh. a love-hate relationship that has
clearly done the brand good. Since the label’s
Berlin runway debut in 2008, it’s established
itself as a permanent player on the German
fashion scene. What’s more, his premium
Kilian Kerner line, along with the secondary
line Kilian Kerner Senses, are now sold in more
than 100 boutiques in 14 countries.
“i’ve gotten a lot of exposure from being part of
mercedes-Benz fashion Week Berlin,” Kerner
says confidently. in 2010, Suzy menkes, the
grande dame of fashion journalism, said of him,
“i (also) see Kilian Kerner as very resourceful.”
She is only one of many celebrity fans and
friends. His creations have been worn by model
Karolína Kurková, comedian anke Engelke,
and tokio Hotel’s Bill Kaulitz; tV host Joko
Winterscheidt partnered with Kerner to found
the t-shirt label “German Garment”; singer
tim Bendzko modeled for him.
Kerner, ever the lateral thinker, also takes pride
in his new fall / Winter 2013 / 14 collection and
his 10th runway show, titled “tell me your
name – a story about sculpture and human
being.” “it’s about being human, and the true
self,” says the philosophical designer. amongst
the collection are wearable knits and businessstyle
dresses, as well as showy pieces like a
400-layer chiffon gown, all of it highly sculptural
and completely extravagant. “The same
Doch
bereits zuvor machte der Designer international
auf sich aufmerksam, indem er den renommierten
„GenArt International Design“ Wettbewerb
im Big Apple gewann.
Der 33-jährige Modemacher aus Osaka kreiert
zwar klassische Entwürfe, die jedoch durch
ihre äußerst raffinierten Schnitte zu begeistern
wissen. „Ich konzentriere mich sehr auf die
Schnittführung, denn es ist mir wichtig, dass
meine Looks elegant wirken“, sagt Yu Amatsu
Patti Smith.
2009 gründet er in seiner Heimat A Degree
Fahrenheit. Der Label-Name ist Programm.
„Es geht bei meinen Kollektionen immer
um das Thema Temperatur. Ich habe daher
Fahrenheit und Celsius kombiniert“, erklärt
er. Seine Frühjahr / Sommer-Kollektion 2013
über zeugte erneut die Fachwelt, diesmal mit
aus schließlich weißen Entwürfen für luftige
Temperaturen. Nun präsentiert der Designer
seine Herbst / Winter-Kollektion 2013/ 14 im
Fashion Week Zelt am Brandenburger Tor.
„Ich glaube, Berlin wird eine der führenden
Mode-Metropolen Europas“, sagt er und hofft,
die deutschen Fashionistas ebenfalls im Sturm
zu erobern.
fashion fans in new York and tokyo bow down
at his feet. Since 2010, when Yu amatsu presented
his first collection at the fashion Week
in Japan’s capital, the industry has been keeping
a keen eye on this up-and-comer. Even prior
to that, however, amatsu had caught the notice
of an international audience after winning the
renowned Genart international design competition
in the Big apple.
The creations of the 33-year-old fashion designer
from osaka are classic pieces that make an
impact with highly sophisticated tailoring. “i
put a lot of energy into patterns, because it’s
important to me that my looks are elegant,”
says Yu amatsu of his style. He acquired the
necessary tools of the trade in new York in
2004, where he worked for the Jen Kao label as
a pattern maker. in addition, he also created
outfits for Patti Smith to wear on stage.
in 2009, he was back in his home country to
found his label a degree fahrenheit – a fitting
name. “my collections always have something to
do with the theme of temperature, and so i combined
fahrenheit and Celsius,” he explains. His
most recent Spring / Summer 2013 collection,
comprised solely of white, breezy creations perfect
for summer temperatures, was once again met
with buzz in the industry. next up: a show of his
fall / Winter 2013 / 14 collection in the fashion
Week tent at Branden burger tor. “i think Berlin
will become one of the leading fashion capitals of
Europe,” he says, and hopes he’ll soon be taking
Germany and its fashionistas by storm too.
11 Making Of
dessen Bilder etwa schon im Whitney Museum of American Art hängen,
www.mercedes-benz.de/fashion
“Just being an individual and having a mind of your own, and being
kind of original. and maybe even a little bit edgy and non-conformist,” is
how the exceptionally talented photographer ryan mcGinley describes
the idea behind the new autumn/Winter 2013 fashion key visual from
mercedes-Benz. Under the slogan “Untamed.”, the young new York photographer,
whose images have already been exhibited in a number of leading
galleries including the Whitney museum of american art, has
teamed up with Jefferson Hack, Creative director and co-founder of the
cult magazine dazed & Confused, to create a characterful setting which
reflects the lifestyle of his generation.
model Karlie Kloss, dressed in Chloé, and her two expressive and powerful
companions – a white horse and the eye catching mercedes-Benz
Concept Style Coupé are at the heart of the new key visual. The latest
model breathes fresh life into the dynamic coupé form and plays with
avant-garde details. a mercedes-Benz that consciously stands out from
the crowd.
The “Untamed.” key visual for autumn/Winter 2013 is the most recent
in a breathtaking series of productions celebrating the unique marriage
of design and style which the mercedes-Benz name represents. last
season the ClS Shooting Brake and Joan Smalls were captured on film by
the legendary photographer mario testino.

A CITY’s
fAshIon
meTAmor-
phosIs
Looks in hochwertigen Materialien überzeugt.
When it comes to Berlin and fashion, there are two stories that can be
told. first, that of the eternal pessimists and their long-known tale of the
unwanted, ugly stepsister. This version is quick to tell: Berlin, so grumble
the critics, simply doesn’t have the right stuff to be a fashion metropolis.
The actual story of the city’s fashion success, however, can’t be summed
up so simply. it’s a story containing many elements of a likable hero:
talent, an endearing candor, cleverness, and the tenacious spirit of an
underdog, who comes through in the end despite all expectations to the
contrary.
But back to the beginning. When anita tillmann and norbert tillmann
staged the very first PrEmiUm in January 2003, the same year that
Bread & Butter moved from Cologne to the capital city, Berlin was
known for its club scene and subculture, and any associations between
fashion and the capital city harked back to long-ago times, when the
area around Hausvogteiplatz was the epicenter of German fashion.
That this status quo could ever change is surely thanks to the fashion
trade shows and Berlin fashion Week that the city has given rise to. it’s
also due in no small part to Berlin’s unavoidable attraction for creative
types from around the world, who have discovered in this city’s raw
spaces the potential for growth and opportunity. With its broken history
and state of rawness, Berlin was and continues to be a city that provides
space for creativity, becoming fertile ground for young designers.
By 2004, Berlin was already home to two labels which were to become
trailblazers. one was lala Berlin by leyla Piedayesh, whose knitted
keffiyeh-style scarves became a downright must-have for Berlin’s mitte
scenesters, and continues to earn fans today with elegant yet relaxed
looks in premium materials. The other pathfinder label was Kaviar
Gauche, co-founded by alexandra fischer-roehler and Johanna Kühl,
to whom goes the credit for setting off the faint whisper of haute couture
that began to find its way down torstrasse. The label’s own unique style
swings somewhere between Grace Kelly-esque chic and the preferred
minimalism of the early 1990s, and has become so successful that the
duo has since designed accessories and capsule collections for other
brands.
Berlin
arbei tete zeitgleich Michael Michalsky.
made in Berlin.
Topshop designen durfte.
14
2006 was the year that Sabrina dehoff founded her jewelry label. Until
then, dehoff had worked as a fashion designer with Guy laroche and
lanvin, and had also run the Berlin fashion consulting agency Vonrot
along with two partners. after the closing of the agency and the arrival
of her first child, it came time to funnel her fashionable talents into a
new direction. What she decided on was brilliant in its simplicity: applying
her designer’s touch to the jewelry world. The first gemstone was
laid; her label was born. Success came quickly – her first season on the
market brought in orders from the departmentstore Quartier 206.
today, she sells her creations out of her own torstrasse boutique, as well
as around the world in locations like Colette in Paris or in the Henrik
Vibskov store in Copenhagen.
Berlin’s mitte district wasn’t the only spot in the city where the fashion
tide was swelling. Elsewhere, at his own typically Berlin headquarters,
michael michalsky was hard at work. in 2006, after leaving behind his
job as a creative head at adidas, michalsky made his way to Berlin to
strike out on his own. Since the beginning, he’s always had the savvy to
(loudly) make a name for himself with no small amount of grandeur – a
philosophy that doesn’t necess arily suit the tastes of everyone, but one
that nevertheless positioned michalsky and his brand so strongly that
successful collaborations of every imaginable sort continue to pile up.
fact is, his is a true “made in Berlin” fashion success story.
Sitting at the other end of the fashion spectrum are the works of Vladimir
Karaleev. Since the label’s founding in 2006, his skillfully deconstructed
designs have provided the proof that one needn’t come from either Japan
or Belgium in order to create clever fashion. little surprise, then, that
his first collection was enthusiastically received in the Japanese market,
or that he was commissioned to design a capsule collection for topshop
last year.
Berlin
Welle Berliner Designer etabliert.
Augustin Teboul beispielsweise.
Vogue, in Verzückung geraten.
lässt an Jil Sandersche Sternstunden denken.
16
By the time the very first Berlin fashion Week was staged in 2007, a
small handful of Berlin labels had already established themselves despite
the hindrances of their location, determined to stitch together a story of
fashion success. Since that landmark beginning, not only have nearly a
dozen fashion seasons come and gone in the capital, but a second wave
of Berlin designers have arrived on the scene.
augustin teboul, for example. The label from french designer odély
teboul and her German counterpart annelie augustin may have only
launched in 2010, but it’s already captured the admiration of Christiane
arp, editor-in-chief of German Vogue. The designs and presentations of
the augustin teboul duo are marked with a unique romanticism, each
of them self-contained works of art that stand confidently on their own.
not quite so far from the everyday and yet no less interesting are the
collections of Hien le. Since 2010, the label has been fulfilling its minimalistic
mission to perfection, reminiscent of the glory days of Jil Sander.
Even these select examples are enough to make it clear: Berlin has
awoken from its long slumber and slowly but surely established itself as
a fashion city with its own unique identity and fingerprint. This is a city
in the throes of a complete evolution, well on its way to becoming an
integral player in the global fashion industry. Just as it should be.
new thinking, new ways of doing. PrEmiUm has revolutionized Berlin’s
fashion landscape and given the city a fashionable new face. Though
anita tillmann and norbert tillmann, the two minds and makers
behind PrEmiUm, both come from a fashion background, their interests
have always spread far more broadly than that. Thanks to their
international vision, they’ve advanced Berlin’s position on the world
stage. Since 2003, the Berliners-by-choice have been channeling their
energetic zeal, innovative spirit, and visionary dedication into not only
making the city more fashionable, but also a better place to be. “trade
show organizers” would be too narrow a title for these two. really doing
justice to their accomplishments means going much bigger: anita
tillmann and norbert tillmann are urban designers. Their goal was
never flash-in-the-pan success, but rather a well-grounded, sustainable
future for the city. The backbone of their activities remains PrEmiUm,
however, and as the trade show marks its 10th anniversary, it’s time to
reflect back on a one-of-a-kind success story.

at the start of the 2000s, Berlin had style, but no professional fashion
lacking in style. anita tillmann and norbert tillmann pulled off a double
coup, remaking the concept of the trade show and elevating Berlin to
the next level. With the first PrEmiUm in 2003, they did away with the
traditional trade show model, which had meant filling up floor space
with as many exhibitors as possible. PrEmiUm’s motto was always
quality over quantity, and the brand portfolio was curated anew from
season to season, with the tillmanns always striving for just the right
mix of young talents and established big-name brands. Though all the
various sectors of the fashion industry were combined at one trade show,
only the cream of the crop from each met the high PrEmiUm standards.
The name says it all: PrEmiUm has always stood for the most
exclusive segments of the fashion market. By presenting trends like
designer jeans from la, street couture from Scandinavia, or fair trade
fashion, PrEmiUm built a name and reputation.
Mit dem Kauf der Ausstellungshallen am Gleisdreieck, der STATION-
anita tillmann and norbert tillmann have always had a vision that
went above and beyond PrEmiUm. right from the beginning, their
trade shows were staged at some spectacular Berlin sites: in an U-Bahn
tunnel beneath Potsdamer Platz, and on the former site of the Wertheim
luxury department store. But it was time for Berlin and fashion to stop
flirting with each other and enter into a lasting relationship. in 2005,
the PrEmiUm proprietors traveled to new York to present their vision
for a Berlin fashion Week to the imG agency. Within 15 minutes, their
case was made; two years later, Berlin celebrated its very first fashion
Week.
to grow and develop, Berlin needs support right where there is the most
potential: in its youthful creativity. in order to give this creativity a solid
footing to stand on, anita tillmann and norbert tillmann not only
created the “PrEmiUm Young designers award” and the “PrEmiUm
Window dresser award”, they also funneled their fashion expertise into
bringing to life other platforms for fostering up-and-coming talents,
with competitions like “Start your fashion business” from the Berlin
Senate or “designer for tomorrow” by Peek & Cloppenburg.
With their 2007 purchase of the Station-Berlin exhibition halls at
Gleisdreieck, the two tillmanns acquired a unique tool for supporting
conscientious city development. it’s here that they hold not only PrEmiUm,
but also the Berliner fahrrad Schau, a trade show about cycling culture
that promotes sustainable mobility now and into the future.
The city’s greatest potential, however, lies in its children. anita tillmann
and norbert tillmann have been actively supporting a number of children’s
charity organizations in cooperation with online donation platform
betterplace.org, and the three projects closest to their hearts will be
presented at the 10th anniversary edition of PrEmiUm in January.
Connecting fashion to the city and to its people, the makers of PrEmiUm
demonstrate just how tightly fashion and social commitment are intertwined.
Their commitment to sustainable growth is what elevates the
two tillmanns from trade show organizers to molders and designers of
this city. That, more than anything, is what makes PrEmiUm live up to
its name.
“X” for a special wool hat. adidas-SlVr designer dirk Schönberger
revived his classic PrEmiUm piece from 2006, the “Bildet Banden”
t-shirt. Johnstons Cashmere created a PrEmiUm scarf from the finest
Q & a
Welt. Wo ist Ihr Herz zu Hause?
In Berlin. Hier gibt es alles, was ich an diesem Punkt in meinem Leben
brauche.
37 Q & a
Seiya nakamura is the international sales manager for Julius. according
to him, tokyo is “boring,” which is why the modern nomad has
taken his work as a consultant to niche and avant-garde brands
worldwide. He’ll be introducing a number of these to the German
market during Berlin’s mercedes-Benz fashion Week. recently,
nakamura has opened his own concept store in Bangkok, according
to him the only asian city that can be compared to Berlin.
mr. nakamura, you come from Japan and are constantly traveling the
world, but where does your heart belong?
in Berlin. The city has everything i need right now – the best of art
and music, with a lot of interesting, creative people around. i can
experience both freedom and all the qualities of a cosmopolitan city,
with a good balance between chaos and harmony.
Which asian city would you compare to Berlin, and why?
i would say Bangkok. i feel a sense of freedom and energy from both
cities.
What do you mean by “freedom”?
freedom is freedom. Simple as that. People can be anything. You don’t
have to be somebody. You can just enjoy being in the moment with
people who feel the same way. it’s quite different to tokyo. for me, that
city is narrow-minded and controlled by the wrong kind of people.
and why is that?
Because of the culture of Japan. People never go out. They live through
the internet and they can’t really feel for real, though they believe what
they’re feeling is real. a lot of Japanese people are obsessed and
controlled by the media. That’s why i prefer to move around and be
mobile, with my cell phone and my laptop as tools to keep me connected.
Why have more and more asian brands been coming to Berlin?
in the past, we would just stay in Japan to make money, but people
who have seen the outside world can be more creative and exciting.
They want to try and feel the clothes, see how the industry works, and
end up expanding to Europe and america, not only Berlin.
You’re something of a networker, connecting select Japanese brands
and helping them find a place to show their collections. Why Berlin?
Berlin is inspiring and artsy. People spend their money on living and
fun. although it’s changing and becoming richer, with more and more
money spent on clothes. Berlin is becoming one of those fashion cities.
i hope it won’t lose its spirit and freedom during this process.
You mean Berlin has to find its economic balance?
i think it already has a very good balance, in a way. However, i would
like to support the fashion designers who are representatives of Berlin
culture, such as Kuboraum. Though they are originally italian, they
have a very strong Berlin spirit and you can feel the Berlin culture in
their work. i think that it is the designers that make the image of the city.

heraus, unter ihnen True Religion, Citizens of Humanity, Adriano
by Cordula Schmitz
Whether as cowboy uniform, status symbol for rebels, or identifier of
groups like the hippie movement, the ability of jeans to reinvent themselves
knows no bounds. Around the turn of the 21st century, premium jeans
came onto the scene and quickly captured legions of fans, women especially.
These jeans, made from soft and stretchy fabric, not only flattered the
figure, they went just as well with a cashmere pullover as with a sweater.
The epicenter of this movement was Los Angeles, where five market leaders
soon emerged, including True Religion, Citizens of Humanity, Adriano
Goldschmied and 7 For All Mankind. Their success was fuelled by the
celebrities who were snapped around town sporting the jeans. In the
American TV series “Entourage,” nearly the entire cast wore Adriano
Goldschmied, while Jessica Simpson gave True Religion a boost. Since
then, the premium denim segment can now count some 500 brands.
Peter Koral is one of premium denim’s pioneers. His brand, 7 For All
Mankind, set about capturing the hearts of female consumers in particular,
who are always on the hunt for jeans with the perfect derrière.
In 2003, Koral brought 7 For All Mankind to Berlin to take part in
PREMIUM for the first time. His example was quickly followed by
numerous other denim brands, continuing to turn the city into a fine little
pop-up denim mecca season after season.
Everything that the denim elite has to offer will once more be in Berlin at
this January’s trade show, proving once more that the premium denim
trend lives on strong.
Q & a
wirklich ankommt: hochwertiges Material, raffinierte Verarbeitung
Unser spezielles „lived in
48 Monaten erzielen.
Als mein Vater 7 For
The premium denim market seems to be saturated. Why launch a new
premium denim brand?
I’ve always had an affection for denim and a dream to create my own
brand. The current trends in the denim industry have seemed to stray
away from the pure beauty of true denim, so I felt the timing was right
to take advantage of my family’s experience and bring back the essence of
what makes a great pair of jeans – quality material, refined finishing and
flawless fit.
What do you think makes Koral stand out from the other premium
denim brands? What makes it special?
A story lives inside every pair of jeans. With our team’s distinct understanding
and experience in how denim ages, we have emulated the way
denim breaks in. Our signature “lived in length” concept features a
range of washes progressing from 0-month to 48-month, hand-processed
to reflect the natural wear and personality of its owner over time.
It was almost ten years ago that your father, Peter Koral, initiated and
also defined the luxury denim trend with 7 For All Mankind. How has
the denim market changed since then?
The market is so much more competitive than it was back then. Today,
we really need to focus on the ways we connect with our consumer and
capture their loyalty. Also, when my father created 7 For All Mankind,
there was no social media, video content and viral marketing involved.
Today’s digital era has made a huge impact on how you communicate
your brand vision and how you connect with your customer.
What are the next steps for you, in terms of brand strategy and brand
development?
I see Koral as a great opportunity to take denim to the next generation
by redefining the category and elevating its relevance in fashion. I don’t
believe there are any other denim brands putting the discerning attention
to detail in product, packaging and branding like we have. Denim
will always be at the heart of Koral, but we will soon be expanding into
other categories, establishing ourselves as a luxury lifestyle brand.
What does the typical or ideal Koral woman look like?
The Koral woman carries a subtle, but powerful confidence. I imagine
her with an appreciation for fine things, an appetite for culture and a
playful spirit. She is a woman who other women respect and men adore. Portrait David Koral, Peter Koral © Michael Tighe
Was gefällt Ihnen
an der Stadt? Worauf freuen Sie sich am meisten? Haben Sie einen
Lieblingsort?
Ich will mir jedenfalls Zeit
In January, you will be presenting Koral for the first time in Berlin.
What are you most looking forward to in Berlin?
I was a history major in college, so I’m looking forward to learning
about the city and definitely experiencing its food and nightlife. I’ll
definitely set aside some time to check out the stores and find inspi ration
from the young designers of Berlin.
What do you expect to achieve business-wise from your presence in
Berlin?
We’re excited for a strong response from the German market and look
to solidify Koral as the next big thing in denim.
Why do you think premium denims continue to sell even when the
market is swamped by cheaper denim brands? And why does it still make
sense to invest in luxury denim, both as a customer and as a designer?
Novelty comes and goes, but everyone connects with their favorite pair
of blue jeans. We’ll fulfill the market’s demand for novelty, but we’ll do
it by our exacting standards and by actually using real denim. Our
customer does not lust after labels – they can recognize quality on their
own and they respect the value of understated details.
könnte meinen, Sie seien Berliner: Waren Sie schon mal in Berlin?
Ja!
Mich inspiriert immer wieder meine Vergangenheit, meine Kindheit
„This is not a polo
jahrelang. Eine Kollektion zusammenzustellen, dauert ein paar Monate,
und Verzögerungen sind inakzeptabel.
Your collections: I recognize qualities that make me think you could
be a Berliner. Easy look, preppy and intellectual, sporty and masculine,
androgynous with a feminine ease. Have you visited Berlin before?
I have! I love Berlin. And I take that description as a compliment. The
city reminds me of where I live in Los Angeles in that there is an ease to
the way of life, to the people.
Your men’s collection is a true asset to the fashion industry. There are few
brands that really get how to encapsulate the urban man. Why do you
think that is?
Wow, thanks. I think most designers think too much like designers when
developing menswear – they’re maybe trying to apply good ideas but to
the wrong types of clothes. Developing a menswear brand takes so much
time and patience, and the design choices aren’t just about a particular
style or collection but how it relates to everything else you’ve done, how
it’s part of your codes, your vocabulary – guys as customers need to
understand those codes, see them over and over again, and be pleasantly
surprised by new ideas threaded through them. That’s hard to pull off
and takes a lot of time.
Do you have a particular idol you look up to, or someone or something
that inspires you?
I’m constantly inspired by my past, my childhood, and the images
ingrained in my mind and memory from that time. There are no
particular idols, although my grandpa was pretty rad.
How did your collections and brand names come about?
The name “Band of Outsiders” comes from a Jean-Luc Godard movie,
“Bande à part.” I just sort of stole it, legally of course. “Boy.” is our first
women’s collection, and I named it as such because I wanted to approach
women’s wear totally differently, with a strict set of rules and focus, which
in this case was about menswear, tailoring, a certain type of sexiness, a
certain type of girl. A few years in, I felt compelled to start “girl.” a sort of
foil to “Boy.” Clothes that were romantic and (gasp) pretty but also cool
and easy. “This is not a polo shirt.” started as a line of only polo shirts and
has evolved into a full line of sporting and leisure-inspired clothes. The
name is inspired by Magritte’s “The Treachery of Images” – as that was
just a painting of a pipe, our polo shirts are just a street version of what is
functional in a totally different context.
You come from a film background in L.A. What is the biggest difference
between film and fashion?
Films take forever to make – years and years with many delays. A collection
takes a few months to put together, and delays aren’t acceptable.
Kein Stil ohne Provokation.
Teds, Mods, Hippies, Rocker, Punks, Raver, Hipster entwickeln Dresscodes,
in Mode gekommen.
The
Without provocation, there can be no style. fashion is whatever is
beyond the masses. This rule has been lived out by the young ever since
they began seeing themselves as vanguards of the avant-garde. teds,
mods, hippies, rockers, punks, ravers, and hipsters alike all develop
their own dress codes, each one a direct product of the group’s social
environment. The intense meshing of music and clothing, where every
note and every stitch of fabric matter, is what creates the impulse that
gives fashion its thrill. The world responds first with a shake of the
head, then wants—needs—the look at any cost. Without the youthful
avant-garde, leather jackets, skinny jeans, dr. martens boots, polo
shirts and sneakers would never have come into fashion.
SEEK is closely tied to this avant-garde. oliver Saunders, SEEK’s
creative director, has known since school age that style is created not on
the runways, but in clubs and on the streets. His parents were mods in
london’s Swinging Sixties. together with maren Wiebus, sales director
at SEEK, he assembled a brand portfolio the same way a music festival’s
program is curated, with scene classics like dr. martens alongside
young rebels like Soulland.
oliver Saunders’ parents could easily have known don letts. The dJ and
filmmaker solidified the presence of both punk and reggae in london, and
was depicted on an album cover of The Clash. in 2012, letts created six
“Subculture” short films for fred Perry, tracing the enthralling history of
music and fashion in a way only a true scene insider could. don letts and
SEEK: both know the scene from the inside out.
PRêT-à-vIvRE!
on the rise: designer Home Collections
Würden Sie Donatella Versace die Haustür öffnen? Ruhig mal machen,
Medusen dominierten Home Collection. Ihm folgten Fendi Casa, ein bis
heute unerschütterlich „greiger“ Armani, der stets vom Happy-
Hamptons-Life inspirierte Ralph Lauren und Margherita Missoni, die
by mareile Braun
if the doorbell rang and it was donatella Versace standing on your doorstep,
would you let her in? Go ahead — or at least open the door a crack.
The italian fashion maven, famed for her wilfully expressive design
tastes, debuted one of the most interesting home collections of the season
at the last milan furniture fair. Think colors: yellow, blue, green! Think
diva décor: ornaments, gold, brocade! Think decorative wall plates!
( really.) The collection in its entirety is perhaps not entirely compatible
with design tastes around these parts. Yet adding a touch of extravagance
to the living room can be a breath of fresh air, like pairing a flashy
designer it-bag with the subdued and understated northern European
wardrobe.
German home décor trends, not to mention those of fashion, continue to
allow more and more room for individuality. mixing together old and
new, no-names and brands, and simple and rich is the key to the eclectic,
characterful style depicted on popular interior design blogs like “The
Selby” and “freunde von freunden”. it’s no longer just clothing that
makes the (wo)man, to borrow from an old idiom — how a person lives
is also an increasingly important aesthetic marker of identity. international
fashion houses have long capitalized on this: more than 20
years ago, Gianni Versace was propagating his luxurious lifestyle in the
form of a medusa-dominated home collection. His collection was
followed by fendi Casa, the to-this-day-unshakeable armani, ralph
lauren’s perpetually “Happy Hamptons” lifestyle look, and margherita
missoni, who cheerfully reapplies herself every season to once again
reinterpret the zigzag. The latest names to make their debuts on the
floors of international furniture fairs include antonio marras,
Blumarine, Bottega Veneta, and roberto Cavalli, whose tribal chic-
influenced collection, inclusive of heavy chandeliers, was quick to land
distributors across asia, india, and russia — in its full entirety, mind
you. Cavalli’s take: well-heeled customers in these new markets want
even their homes to be top-to-bottom brand name worlds.
seinen Tribal Chic samt schweren Lüstern gleich dutzendfach an asiatische,
indische und russische Vertriebspartner absetzte. Als komplette
Kollektion, wohlbemerkt.
propagiere“, sagt Michalsky: „real clothes for real people.“ Er meint
“Utterly unthinkable!” posits michael michalsky in response. as of last
october, the Berlin-based creative is Germany’s only designer with a
sofa collection to his name. His pieces are the exact opposite of a Cavalli
creation: practical (removable covers can withstand a veritable horde of
children), muted (michael and Giorgio would be on the same side: all
Shades of Grey, with a side of beige), and affordable (the priciest options
go for € 5000). if these were items of clothing, the fashion industry
would describe them as “wearable.”
“my first line of furniture should follow the same mantra as my fashion
collections,” says michalsky. “real clothes for real people.” He means
wardrobe favorites that stand the test of time, those pieces that become
faithful companions throughout the years, with a half-life far exceeding
the duration of a fashion season. for him, a beautiful sofa is like the
little black dress of a woman’s wardrobe: “Everybody needs one and it
will never go out of style, but quality and design are what makes it something
special.” Soon to join the sofa in the michalsky living line is a set
of cutlery, followed by wallpaper and carpets. But michalsky wouldn’t be
michalsky if he wasn’t already dreaming of other big ideas: “to one day
see all my interior design ideas brought together in a hotel… now that
would really be something!”
Hosen schneller runter, als du „James Brown is dead“ sagen kannst.
Mit „Mike for President“ oder „We don't have to take our clothes
Man
entgegen: „PREMIUM, we can't wait to touch you!“
Get ready for a little lesson in funky music history. Give it up for the Cuban
Brothers, your instructors on all matters soul, funk, and hip hop – not to
mention they can drop their pants faster than you can say “James Brown
is dead.” This complete package of groove, hits, and so much more –
coming soon to PrEmiUm’s 10th anniversary dinner party.
They call Snoop dogg a brother, have been on stage with James Brown,
and have shared the microphone with Kurtis Blow. The Cuban Brothers
are not just the most amusing debacle of the hip hop world, they’re also –
behind the makeup and wigs – reverential connoisseurs of hip hop and
urban music and worshippers of the heroes of those genres. for those
who size up the Cuban Brothers as a mere slapstick act would be missing
the point. The three londoners with the flamboyant stage names of
miguel mantovani, archerio, and Kengo-San are an amalgamation of
influences from the last 50 years of entertainment history. anyone who
believes that silly costumes and good music can’t go together has never
seen the Cuban Brothers in action. Their debut album “Yo Bonita!” made
cowbell-tinged waves through the world of sexy groove music, and had
the Cuban Brothers pulling one hot refrain after another out of the pockets
of their shiny track pants. Songs like “mike for President” and “We don’t
have to take our clothes off” could make even the Beastie Boys and monty
Python look tame by comparison. But a Cd can only capture one mere
dimension of the 3d experience that is the Cuban Brothers. amusing
though they may be on recordings, it’s on stage that they explode into
character. They need to be seen and not just heard to be believed, which
is why Elton John, damien Hirst, and robbie Williams are amongst the
many who have booked the Cuban Brothers to perform live at special
occasions.
Guests at PrEmiUm’s 10th anniversary dinner party can count themselves
among those lucky audiences. Who knows, perhaps they can even
look forward to one of miguel mantovani’s “fever Yoga” lessons divulging
the secrets to spiritual fulfilment – make sure to bring an oil barrel and a
live chicken, just in case. for his part, mantovani is already counting the
days until the trio’s grand debut on the Berlin stage: “ PrEmiUm, we
can’t wait to touch you!”
in Bangladesch.
Giving back is what IWISHUSUN is all about. According to the World
Health Organization (WHO), 39 million people on this planet are living
in blindness, and in 80 % of those cases, it could have been prevented.
We’re working to change this – one person at a time.
My brother Patrick Andrist and I work in the fashion and publishing
industries, which means that we are surrounded by beautiful images on a
daily basis. We felt moved to help those whose ability to see and partake in
the beauty around them had been taken away by cataracts, a condition
which can be treated by simple surgery. Though we come from different
career backgrounds, we both share the vision of using our abilities to make
a meaningful impact. Fuelled by this goal, we started IWISHUSUN
together.
With every product sold, IWISHUSUN finances an eye operation for a
needy individual in Bangladesh. By creating a direct connection between
producer and consumer, we cut out the costly middleman, allowing us to
donate a substantial sum from each sale towards an eye operation, which
costs only 40 USD in Bangladesh. This procedure is performed by top
doctors from Orbis International, a charitable organization dedicated
toward reducing blindness and active throughout the poorest parts of the
world. Our cooperation with Orbis on one particular project in Bangladesh
fulfils our high standards for transparency. We can ensure that contributions
go directly to where they’re most needed, as well as know who has seen
their life improve from a cataract operation.
Quality is always at the forefront, ensuring that the customers supporting
IWISHUSUN’s operations receive a high-caliber product for a fair price
and give to a good cause at the same time. Donations can also be made
directly to Orbis – no purchase necessary. We’re happy about any form of
support for the cause!
Mode bedeutet Wandel.
Presseabteilung,“ so Anita Tillmann.
klassischer Maßschneiderei – Rock 'n' Roll goes Savile Row.
betont.
54
fashion is a field of constant change, and new generations of talent are
always moving in to take the reins. Since 2005, PrEmiUm has been supporting
these up-and-comers with the PrEmiUm Young designers award.
from the outset, anita tillmann and norbert tillmann have been devoted
to supporting new talent. “in terms of progressiveness, PrEmiUm has
always been ahead. We’ve always wanted to inspire the industry, which
can be slow to react to change, with the way we curate. The PrEmiUm
Young designers award is a tool to shine the spotlight on fresh talents
and give them ongoing guidance,” says anita tillmann. “Winners will
receive sustained support from us in following seasons, whether with a
trade show booth, through our extensive network, or from the PrEmiUm
press section.”
for the Spring/Summer 2013 season, the womenswear winner is russian
designer Julia Seregina, whose creations fuse complex handwork and knitting
techniques to become fascinating, wearable works of art. The menswear
winner is Breaks london, co-founded by Japanese designers ryo
Yamazaki and Kohji Yanagi, brought together by a shared love of fashion
and premium materials, from rich leathers to luxurious wool to quality
cottons. Their collections marry modern elements with classic tailoring –
rock ‘n’ roll goes Savile row. The winner in the accessories category is
Kuboraum, an eyewear label designed in Berlin and crafted in italy. Each
frame is devised as a sort of mask, accentuating personality and character
in the wearer’s face.
Behind this in-demand los angeles label is margaret maldonado, owner
of one of the most successful stylists’ agencies in Hollywood. The l’agence
concept: affordable luxury and premium materials, which are transformed
into timeless casual wear with modern silhouettes. Each piece is
designed to be worn for many seasons, and every new collection builds
upon its predecessors. in so doing, maldonado prefers to draw inspiration
from classic styles rather than reflect the trends of the moment. together
with the Sama eyewear label, l'agence created a line of sunglasses whose
“Gossip” model has been worn by none other than angelina Jolie, only
one of the label’s many celebrity fans. no wonder, considering maldonado's
deep connections to Hollywood’s star scene.
aren’t they too cute for words? michael michalsky has created his very
first product for kids: the “Urban nomads” sneaker, now available for
mini fashion-icons-to-be. after the resounding success of the grown-up
version led to waiting lists, the brand was fielding more and more
requests for kids’ sizes. Well, the people have asked, and now they shall
receive, with three children's models to choose from. The task was not
easy for the designers, however. “developing children’s shoes is complicated.
i came up with an entirely new shoe design, from insole right up
to assembly, and we had to find a new manufacturer able to do this. in
the end, i'm very happy with the results,” says michael michalsky. The
fall/Winter 2013/14 collection of michalsky sneakers for kids will
debuting at PrEmiUm in January.
Leandro Cano ist der Gewinner des Nachwuchsawards „Designer for
Tomorrow“ von Peek & Cloppenburg 2012. Mit Spannung wird seine
Solo-Show im Zelt der Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin im Januar
erwartet.
leandro Cano is the 2012 winner of the “designer for tomorrow” by
Peek & Cloppenburg award for young fashion talent, and his solo show
in the mercedes-Benz fashion Week Berlin tent is hotly anticipated.
“Beauty is more than just a word to me. it inspires a very special, priceless
feeling, and that’s exactly what my collection sets out to achieve,”
says the talented Spaniard. in July 2012, Cano dazzled with his
collection of sculptural silhouettes, elaborate prints, and avant-garde
leather pieces. for the fashionation sections at Peek & Cloppenburg’s
department stores in Berlin, Stuttgart and Vienna, Cano has created a
minimalist, oversized leather bag that will be available starting in
January 2013. The story behind the bag’s design will stay a secret until
its January debut.
Since 2001, rachid Bourak and aysen Bitzer-Bourak have been propelling
their 0039 italy label to success. The concept was to strip the
classic women’s blouse of all traces of stuffiness, replacing it with a carefree,
mediterranean feel. in 2010, a men’s line was added, which will be
joined for the a/W 2013 season by the laB(oratory) collection, a
product line making a statement with exclusive materials like lace,
leather, and velvet as well as exceptional workmanship. “fall landscape”
is a homage to the opulence of autumnal landscapes: a mix of muted
nature tones, modern materials, animal prints, and – gracing a 0039
italy collection for the first time – leather. on march 1, 2013, the world’s
first 0039 italy shop will open its doors, rubbing elbows with exclusive
boutiques at Schlüterstrasse 51.
