Introduction / Einführung
The Sultanat of Oman is the land of fragrances. In the streets, in the
small alleys of the souks, and in the houses of the locals the visitor´s
nose scents vibrant flavors of magic and unknown power. The olfactory
nerves might recognize the delicate concoction of rose- and yasmin
oil, of musk and sandalwood but the actual combination of ingredients
remains an unsolved mystery to our noses.
Incense, heavy perfumes, and the omnipresent smoke of frankincense
form an integral part of the rich cultural heritage. The souk´s busy
merchants burn incense and frankincense to attract
customers. Women dressed in colorful kangas or black
abbays sniff through an unlimited array of perfumed
bodylotions and fragrant essences. The attarun, perfume
composers, create personalized fragrances for
them.
Smoke rituals are an integral part of everyday life and
accompany festivities and events in the life of an
Omani. Newborns are welcomed with a proper ceremony
of fragrant smokes.
Omani families traditionally welcome their guests with
incense or frankincense. After dinner the hands are
sprinkled with aromatic rosewater from a long-necked
silver flacon. The history of Omani fragrances began
long before our time. 2.800 years ago the legendary
Queen of Sheba sent frankincense from South Arabia
to Palestine. The precious gift was intended to impress King Solomon
and to enhance commercial contacts.
Since our first visit to the Sultanate the fragrances of Oman have
accompanied us and keep on fascinating us. In the meantime we have
also introduced a lot of friends from our homecountry to the sensuous
fragrances and incense mixtures. Their enthusiastic reactions and
their curiosity about oriental scents inspired us to produce this book.
The Dhofar
Land of Frankincense
Land des Weihrauchs
The Dhofar
Quote Marco Polo:
“Dhofar is a great and noble city... It is located next to the sea and has a very good port, so that there
is a great amount of shipping traffic between Dhofar and India-and the merchants thence take great
numbers of Arab horses to that market, making great profits thereby. ... Much white incense is produced
here.“
This is the famous globetrotter Marco Polo's account of the ancestral city of Salalah in the 13th century.
In those times it was also called Dhofar or Zafar. Today the entire southern province of the
Sultanat Oman carries this name.
Green plantations with tropical fruits and coconut-trees form the typical townscape of Salalah. The
capital of Dhofar is situated in the coastal plain at the bottom of Jebel Qara which ascends to 1500 m.
The massif protects the city against the dry desert climate of Rub al Khali. The famous frankincense
trees have perfect growing conditions in the wadis and valleys which are located towards the desert.
Zitat Marco Polo:
Sultanats Oman diesen Namen.
In
From July till September the annual summer monsoon
touches the mountainslopes and the coastal area with
its delicate drizzling fog. Nature awakens from its
sleeping beauty. Now a tender green carpet of grass
decorated with flowers covers the plateaus and flanks
of Jebel Qara. For three months the dry wadis fill up
with live-giving water. Now arabic tourists from all
over the gulf region start their annual pilgrimage to
Salalah. They enjoy the mild foggy weather while picnicking
on dew-covered fresh grass – happy to escape
the heat of their homecountries.
4.000 years ago Dhofari camel caravans carried
the frankincense to the ports of the Mediterranean.
At that time the freely growing frankincense trees
granted unimaginable wealth, power, and flourishing
international trade relations to the inhabitants
of Dhofar. The source of the frankincense was
a fiercely kept secret which the Dhofaris protected
against intruders with myths, legends and weapons.
In the heyday of frankincense trade the precious
resin was weighed with gold. Today Salalah is still
the main trading centre for Omani frankincense.
Bereits vor 4.000 Jahren transportierten dhofarische
Kamelkarawanen Weihrauch bis ans Mittelmeer.
Damals garantierten die wild wachsenden
Weihrauchbäume den Bewohnern des Dhofar
unvorstellbaren Reichtum, Macht und blühende
internationale Handelsbeziehungen. Woher der
Weihrauch kommt war damals ein gut gehütetes
Geheimnis, das die Dhofaris mit Mythen, Legenden
und Waffen gegen Eindringlinge absicherten.
Schließlich wurde das kostbare Harz in der
Blütezeit des Handels mit Gold aufgewogen. Noch
heute ist Salalah der Hauptumschlagsplatz für
omanischen Weihrauch.
The dried resin of the Boswella Sacra
tree has a whitish, yellowish,greenish
or brownish shimmer, depending upon
origin and quality. The most precious of
all is the milky-white frankincense of
the Nejd region close to the Samham
mountains in the East. The owners of
the wadis – dry riverbeds - where the
trees grow are Dhofari family clans.
Je nach Herkunft und Qualität schimmert
das getrocknete Harz des
Boswella Sacra Baumes weiss, gelb,
grün oder braun. Der milchig-weiße
Weihrauch aus der Region Nejd nahe
dem östlich gelegenen Samhamgebirge
gilt als das wertvollste und wohlriechendste
Baumharz der Welt. Die
Wadis – trockene Flußbetten - in denen
die Bäume wachsen sind im Besitz
dhofarischer Familienclans.
During the harvest from March until June the trees are
scored by a special knife – the manghaf. The tenacious
drops of the resin are known in Oman as „tears of
Allah“.
The precious resin does not begin flowing freely until
after the second scoring. Three weeks later the dried
tears can be collected. Every three years the frankincense
tree requires a recovery period of several years.
angeritzt.
Erholungsphase.
Many ancient religions worshipped frankincense
as being holy . Ancient priests in Egypt,
Mesopotamia, Persia, Greece, and the Roman
Empire sacrificed frankincense to their gods.
People believed that the smoke established
as a connection between this world and the
next and cold appease the gods. 5.000 years
ago the Egyptians alone consumed a 3.000
tons of the precious resin yearly. They needed
frankincense oils to embalm the Pharaos and
they appreciated its medicinal and healing
properties.
Furthermore the caravans provided the
Mediterranean with silk and exotic spices.
The Romans assumed that these luxurious
goods also originated from Arabia. Therefore
they referred to this region as „Arabia Felix“ -
„Prosperous Arabia“.
Viele antike Religionen verehrten den
Weihrauch als heilig. In Ägypten,
Mesopotamien, Persien, Griechenland und
dem römischen Imperium opferten die
Priester Weihrauch. Man glaubte, dass der
Duftstoff eine Verbindung zwischen Diesseits
und Jenseits schaffen könne und die Götter
besänftige. Im dritten Jahrtausend v. Chr.
konsumierten die Ägypter pro Jahr allein
3.000 Tonnen des kostbaren Baumharzes. Sie
stellten daraus Öle zur Einbalsamierung
ihrer Pharaonen her und schätzten die
Heilkraft des Weihrauchs in der Medizin.
Die Karawanen versorgten den
Mittelmeerraum außerdem mit Seide und
exotischen Gewürzen. Die Römer glaubten,
auch diese Luxusgüter stammten aus
Arabien. Deshalb nannten sie die Region
„Arabia Felix“ - „Glückliches Arabien“.
Bokhur
The fresh flavor of frankincense mingles with innumerable aromas of bokhur. That is the
Omani word for a special incense potpourri made from various ingredients.
Traditionally it is the duty of the women to produce the manifold bokhur mixtures. Each
bokhur manufacturer has its own special recipes which are top secret.
The dark, almost black, Ud eagle wood from Indonesia and the orange-brown Indian sandalwood
are the base notes for the incense mixtures. Each bokhur producer mixes the grated
chippings of the exotic woods with her own composition of perfumed oil.
Resins like frankincense and myrrh, musk, saffron, rose oils, orange oils and other flower
based oils are mixed with grinded seashells and sugar until it becomes a fragrant paste.
Pressed into flat tiles, sandalcake and udcake are another variety of bokhur. Each handmade
mixture is a unique product and carries the artistic fragrance of its creator.
So bezeichen

To elicit the essence of frankenincense and bokhur you
need an incense burner – mubkhar in arabic. They are
traditionally made of red or grey clay. Silversmiths also
produce precious variants made of delicately etched
metal covered with silver. On top of the mubkhar you put
a piece of red glowing charcoal which you cover with
your choice of incense.
gefertigt. Silberschmiede stellen kostbare Varianten aus
feinverziertem, versilbertem Metall her.
23
24
The most beautiful mubkhars are produced in Dhofar. Traditionally it
is the task of the women. Mirbat and Taqa are important centres for
mubkhar production. In the nearby coastal mountain region the producers
search for the clay which is used for the classical handcrafted
burners. Afterwards the mubkhars are burnt and painted with varnish
oil-paint. Recently the mubkhar artists have begun to spray
their burners with glitter and sequins.
Brenner in Handarbeit formen.
Handschrift seiner Herstellerin.
Omani frankincense emits
a delicate beguiling scent
when burnt. For thousands
of years its flavor has been
much sought after.
Omanis perfume their
hair, beards, houses and
clothes with the rising fragrant
clouds of smoke.
They hang the dishdasha
or abbaya – the long robes of the omanis - on a wooden frame pyramid
under which they put the mubkhar with the smouldering bokhur or frankincense.
During the night the robe adopts the scent of the incense.
However this perfuming is just one aspect of this ritual. Frankincense has
been known since antiquity as a natural disinfectant and insecticide.
Omanischer Weihrauch verströmt beim Räuchern einen betörend zarten
Duft.
More than 2.500 years ago Sumhuram was the most
important frankincense-port of the Dhofar region.
Frankincense was stored in the city´s huge warehouses
until it was ready for shipping. The ruins of the ancient
city rest on a 27 meter high hill. From there it was easy
to oversee and protect the entrance to Khor Ruri, whose
estuary formed an ideal natural port.
An old Hadrami inscription provides information about
the founders and settlers of ancient Sumhuram. The
translation of the Hadrami name Sumhuram is „the
impressive premises“ and this description still holds
true.
Vor 2.500 Jahren war Sumhuram der bedeutendste
Weihrauchhafen im Dhofar. In großen Speichern lagerte
The medieval port of Al Baleed was ideally located between two lagoons.
From 1995 until 2005 archeologists from the German University of Aachen
excavated the settlement which was once surrounded by a huge protective
wall. Out of the sand emerged the remaining 143 pillars of a huge mosque,
fundaments of a monumental palace, houses and a cemetery.
Pottery and coin findings indicate that Al Baleed was a busy port from
which essences and incense was shipped as far as to the ports of the Red
Sea, India, and China.
Since 2006 visitors can stroll through the unique ancient site. The neighbouring
museum exhibits the most precious artefacts of the excavations.
In 2000 the three most important places regarding frankincense culture
have been nominated as UNESCO cultural heritage sites: the famous frankincense
valley Wadi Dukka, Sumhuram and Al Baleed.
