Experience the past
(Hi)story at every turn
Go back in time: from barrows and Iron Age, Varus
Battle and Peace of Westphalia. Long before the
Romans tried to cultivate the Germans, the German
natives contributed about 5,000 years ago
something almost unbelievable: to bury their
relatives, they built numerous megalithic tombs,
which the vernacular calls barrows. Thus, the
Germans made a “filthy rich” region out of the
Osnabrück region. The walk along the “Hünenweg”
or a ride on the “road of megalithic culture”
lead past these monumental, archaeological
monuments.
About two thousand years later, probably the
des cendants of the builders of the megalithic
tomb have built the so-called Schnippenburg in
Ostercappeln. With the start of archaeological
excavations in 2000, the ring wall which was
erected in 300 BC in the Iron Age proved as a real
“treasure trove”.
The Schnippenburg was not only a trading centre
on a long-distance trade route between Celtic
populated areas and North West Germany, but
also production and refining capacity for iron
goods. Even more: the inhabited complex apparently
served as a place of cultic rites and ceremonies.
Nevertheless, the Schnippenburg raises
many riddles:
For example it is still unclear why the complex
was destroyed and burned down around 100 BC.
No peaceful end was the clash of Roman and Germanic
tribes in the year 9 AD. The Varus Battle is
a legendary event in world history and marked a
turning point of the Roman domination in
Europe. The crushing defeat of the Roman legions
under Varus made people make myths about the
supposed battle sites and the Germanic conquerors
Arminius for centuries.
As it can now be considered as certain that the
Varus Battle took place in Osnabrück region, this
event in Bramsche-Kalkriese is scientifically
sound, realistic and at the same time exciting
and eventful presented. The Museum of the Varus
Battle is a minimalist-scale architectural work.
In the inside seeking traces begins with the early
evidence from literary sources and leads to round
3000 of the 6000 findings, which document the
battle action.
For expeditions into the turbulent era of the high
Middle Ages not even a museum is necessary.
In the historic landscape of the Osnabrück region
you can find more than 100 monuments of
Romanesque origin, ranging from the so-called
“Fluchtburg” and the cloister complex to the
fabled churches.
These buildings built between the early 9th
and 13th Century include the Iburg castle, the
Osnabrück Cathedral of St. Peter and the numer-
ous stone works in Osnabrück and Ankum.
As “City of Peace Treaty of Westphalia” Osnabrück
went down in history. Here – and in Münster –
was held the first pan-European peace congress,
which ended after five years of diplomatic tug
of war in October 1648 the Thirty Years’ War.
Beside to the City Hall with its Hall of Peace many
locations and testimonies of this moving era have
been preserved in the city.
Osnabrück is committed to the tradition of the
Peace of Westphalia. In 1998, the Felix Nussbaum
Museum was opened in which the world’s most
extensive collection of art works of the Jewish
painter who was born in Osnabrück and found
murdered in Auschwitz can be found.
Another of Osnabrück’s sons jolted the world with
an anti-war novel: “All Quiet on the Western Front”
made the writer and pacifist Erich Maria Remarque
world famous. The largest collection of literary
and biographical documents of the author
holds the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Centre.
The award of the peace prize named after the
author Remarque, the Osnabrück Peace Talks
with many renowned international participants
as well as the German Foundation for Peace
Research, which is located in Osnabrück, are
further examples of the diverse commitments
of Osnabrück in the field of peace culture
Discover delicious things
A good and healthy
taste of home
For the true connoisseur: The way to a man’s
heart is through his stomach – a culinary journey
through the healthy region with tradition.
Cherries, white fish and trout, Kolk tea, gourmet
salt, peace ham or “Heavenly” chocolates –
a whole series of popular food and beverages
have a long tradition in the Osnabrück region.
The culinary calendar provides many climaxes,
too. In spring you get, for example, asparagus
dishes in all kinds of variations. In the cold season
hearty green cabbage specialities are the highlights
of the regional and seasonal cuisine.
A good meal is enjoyed in common here.
Large tables offer plenty of space for long meals
in a relaxed, convivial atmosphere. This is an
expression of joy.
But socialising even begins before the meal.
When shopping at one of the many street markets.
The best known and most impressive finds
place next to the Cathedral in the historic Old
Town in Osnabrück. Greek olives, exotic fruits and
fresh fish and meat products – regional manufacturers
and distributors sell their colorful treasures
to the people. Of course, everything may be
tasted. That’s how to get in touch quickly to
philosophise about products, exchange recipes
or simply hold a small “chat”.
A special event is also the purchasing directly
from producers, for example, in one of the countless
small farm shops in the surrounding area.
Many companies are certified organic farmers.
Picturesque mills grind the grain for some
multinucleated specialties like the “Osnabrück
country bread” or crispy spring rolls. The Osnabrück
region is a region, in which healthy food
and the sustainable cultivation of food are of
high importance.
The people here are well known for their solidity,
their love of nature and for its earthiness. These
qualities find also culinary expression. Honest indulgence
and the return to tradition are the latest
trend. Crafts, guest houses and hotels with history
deliver insight into the past and uniqueness of
a region and its inhabitants. Walls, that have survived
for centuries, or even hosts, keeping the old
traditions alive, contribute to the exceptional
travel experiences.
A journey through the varied cuisine of the
Osnabrück region shows that the chefs mainly
set on regional and seasonal products. And you
can taste it. Whether the dishes are prepared
classically or modern: A culinary tour through Osnabrück
region offers something delicious for
all tastes.
