Vita Lebenslauf
Born in 1973 in Munich, Julian Appelius was raised in
France and in Germany. After an apprenticeship as a
cabinetmaker and further studies of sculpture at the
Academy of the Arts in Munich he studied Industrial
Design at the University of the Arts Berlin, passed his
diploma in 2003 and opened the Studio Julian Appelius
in Berlin. His work focuses on conceptual products that
play with our learned cognitive and behavioural habits.
The founding principles of his formal reduced design
challenge us to re-interpret the context while realizing
the full potential of material and technical design aspects.
Additional activities include graphic, interior and event
design.

Julian Appelius ist 1973 in München geboren und wächst in
Frankreich und in Deutschland auf. Nach dem Abitur, einer
Ausbildung zum Tischler und einem Studium der Bildhauerei
an der Akademie der Künste in München, studiert er
Industrial Design an der Universität der Künste in Berlin,
macht 2003 sein Diplom und eröffnet das Studio Julian
Appelius in Berlin. Der Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeiten liegt im
konzeptionellen Produkt. Das Spiel mit erlernten Seh- und
Handlungsgewohnheiten, die Neuinterpretation von Kontexten
und die Ausreizung von Materialien und technischen
Möglichkeiten bilden die Grundlage seiner formal reduzierten
Gestaltung. Er ist zudem tätig in den Bereichen Grafik,
Interior, Messe- und Eventdesign.

Trio offers a lot of storage space on a minimal surface.
With its three staggered levels the side table is
reminiscent of the classic milking stool. The small
difference is that with Trio the work is already done: you
can just depose everything and relax.
Viele Ablagemöglichkeiten auf minimaler Fläche bietet Trio.
Mit seinen drei versetzt angeordneten Ebenen ist der
Beistelltisch eine Reminiszenz an den klassischen Melkstuhl.

the seat taking jacket, scarf and hat securely and offers a
place to store and to sit.

Topple The Rocking Library

Forget the problem of unstable and tilted libraries - with Topple it´s not
a problem anymore! A library which tips in one direction when books
are placed on it. The 5° slant means that the books lean gently, giving
them stability. A play with balance and stability, suitable for light and
heavy literature.

Topple ist es kein Problem mehr! Ein Regal welches sich beim Beladen in

Pinocchio Stack´n Sit!

Who doesn’t remember the colourful stacking pyramids from his/her childhood? Initial experiences with colours, shapes, and
spatial skills. Pinocchio is a child’s chair that grows with the child, who can have fun building it again and again. An interplay
of colour, form, and stability. How high should the seat be for optimal comfort? Where should the supports be placed in
order to provide stability? Chaos or order? These are some of the many interesting questions that will inspire children to try
things out. Pinocchio offers children a seat starting at 26 cm, with two armrests for added stability. As the child grows, the
blocks in the armrest can be used to elevate the seat to height of 36 cm. From several chairs, kids can build tables, shelves,
and other objects: the results are limited only by the imagination.
Wer kennt nicht die bunte Steckpyramide aus seiner
Kindheit? Die ersten Erfahrungen mit Farben, Formen und Haptik. Pinocchio ist ein Kinderstuhl der mitwächst und der Spaß macht
immer wieder aufs Neue aufgebaut zu werden. Ein Spiel mit Farben, Formen und Stabilität. Welche Höhe sollte der Stuhl haben
für einen optimalen Komfort? Wo sollten die Querstreben platziert werden um eine gute Stabilität zu gewährleisten? Chaos
oder Ordnung? Dies sind nur ein paar der interessanten Fragen, die das Kind dazu inspirieren werden alle Varianten auszuprobieren.
Pinocchio bietet Kindern ab 3 Jahren einen Stuhl mit einer Sitzhöhe ab 26 cm und zwei Armlehnen für einen zusätzlichen
Seitenhalt. Mit zunehmendem Alter kann der Stuhl auf eine Sitzhöhe von bis zu 36 cm angehoben werden. Aus mehreren Stühlen
können auch Tische, Regale und andere Objekte gebaut werden: die Möglichkeiten werden nur durch die Fantasie eingeschränkt.

Turner The Transformer

Prototype presented at SaloneSatellite 2006
Turner is an upholstered cantilever chair allowing two
different seating-configurations. By simply turning the frame
the chair becomes a lounge chair. The seat height of 46 cm is
reduced to 38 cm and the seat-angle becomes more reclined,
offering more relaxed comfort.
Turner ist ein gepolsteter Freischwinger der zwei
Sitzpositionen ermöglicht. Durch das einfache Drehen des
Gestells wird aus dem Stuhl ein Sessel. Durch ein Absenken der
Sitzhöhe von 46 cm auf 38 cm und einen steileren Sitzwinkel
wird die Sitzgeometrie verändert und der Sitzkomfort gesteigert.

Rug´n Roll ist ein eleganter und komfortabler Teppich aus Alcantara ® . Der Aufbau von Rug´n
Roll garantiert höchsten Komfort, gute Isolierung gegen Kälte und eine hohe ästhetische
Qualität. Der Teppich ist ein Objekt, das täglich genutzt wird und in der Lage ist, einen Ort zu
schaffen, eine Oase unabhängig vom Umfeld: komfortabel, warm und geschützt.

Flaming Lily Christmas candle

During the Christmas season only the best of food will be served. To make room
for biscuits and other delicacies the traditional Christmas wreath with its 4
candles is replaced by FLAMING LILY. The 4-candleelements of FLAMING LILY
are counted up to Christmas – every week there is one more light – first one,
then two, then three, and finally four wicks are lit. Either on top of each other or
arranged as a chain of lights: FLAMING LILY is a true illuminating object and an
eyecatcher all year round.
In der Adventszeit kommt nur das Beste auf den Tisch. Um Platz für Plätzchen
und andere Leckereien zu machen, muss der übliche Adventskranz mit seinen vier
Kerzen weichen. Die vier Kerzenelemente von FLAMING LILY zählen bis zum Fest
runter und haben jede Woche ein Licht mehr – erst einen, dann zwei, dann drei,
dann vier Dochte. Ob aufeinander gestapelt oder als Lichterkette nebeneinander:
FLAMING LILY ist in jeder Aufstellung ein wahres Leuchtobjekt und ein Blickfang für
das ganze Jahr.

Left or Right BIG

Think big and take two. Left or Right BIG is a lamp that
seemed to have grown out of a pedestal which at the
same time serves as a book or magazine case. In its big
version it is a separate design object.
Like the table or wall version LEFT OR RIGHT can be
turned to the right or the left. Every version on its own is
an eye-catcher but both combined form a symetrical unit.
Think big. Left or Right ist gewachsen. Die Leuchte mit
dem Fuß, der zugleich als praktische Ablage für Bücher und
Zeitschriften dient, wird in der großen Version zum freistehenden
Designobjekt. Wie die Tisch- und Wandleuchte blickt
auch Left or Right BIG in einer Version nach links und in der
anderen nach rechts. Jede für sich ist ein Blickfang, beide
Varianten zusammen ergänzen sich zu einem symmetrischen
Gesamtbild.

Reading lamp or bedsite table - Left or Right is both. Mounted on the wall beside your bed Left or Right is the ideal companion for enjoyable
reading comfort. Left or Right is also designed as a rack for books or similar utensils. Therefore it is no surprise that the rack also functions as a
bookmark. In order to guarantee the best lightening effect Left or Right comes in a left or right version. Whether on the bedside table, your desk or
in the corridor the lamp fabricated from powder coated steel in white and black fits almost everywhere.
Leuchte oder Nachttisch? Left or Right ist gleich beides! Neben dem Bett an der Wand befestigt ist Left or Right der optimale Begleiter für gemütliches
Lesevergnügen. Licht zum Lesen und eine Ablage für Bücher und andere Utensilien. Da ist es keine Überraschung, dass die Ablage auch als Lesezeichen
dient. Für den optimalen Lichteinfall beim Lesen gibt es Left or Right als linke und rechte Variante. Ob auf dem vorhandenen Nachttisch, dem Schreibtisch
oder im Flur – die Leuchte aus pulverbeschichtetem Stahl, in weiß oder schwarz, passt fast überall.

Lightable It´s enlighted!

Via »total reflection« light (LEDs) is transmitted through the glass top, not visible for the human eye. Placing an object, capable to
transmit light, on the glas surface, by neglecting the meeting surfaces through complete flush contact, light emits from the glas
surface and enlights the object. Think of Lightable as a shopfront display system addressing a major market of highstreet retailers,
department stores, perfumerys, flag ship stores etc. Products such as glass table ware, perfume flacons, plastic items etc. could be lit
and create a more particular attention. In restaurants, pubs or bars guests would enjoy glowing drinks at the bar counter.
Mittels Totalreflexion wird das Licht (LEDs), für das Auge nicht sichtbar, durch eine Glasscheibe geleitet. Stellt man ein lichtleitfähiges
Objekt auf diese Glasscheibe, welches durch einen absolut bündigen Kontakt die Oberfläche am Berührungspunkt aufhebt, tritt das Licht in
diesem Bereich aus der Glasscheibe und erleuchtet das Objekt. Lightable wurde als Installation konzipiert, könnte aber in vielfältiger Weise
eingesetzt werden. Als Präsentationsfläche in Schaufenstern von Boutiquen, Parfümerien, Kaufhäusern, Produkte wie Glasgeschirr, Flakons
und Kunststoffartikel werden ins rechte Licht gerückt und sorgen für deutlich mehr Aufmerksamkeit. In Restaurants und Hotels könnten die
Gäste von leuchtenden Tellern essen, an der Bar aus leuchtenden Gläsern trinken.

Oops!

The dimensional separation of lightbulb and lampshade cause visual confusion
and provoke the user to act upon it. The bare lightbulb is concealed and lit by
the vertical shifting of the lampshade.
Glühlampe und Schirm, räumlich voneinader getrennt, irritieren das Auge und
fordern den Nutzer zur Handlung auf. Die entblößte Glühlampe wird über das
vertikale Verschieben des Schirms abgedeckt und illuminiert.

HalfBulb
Design by Julian Appelius 2003, prototype realised in collaboration with Osram
An homage to the naked bulb, hanging down lonely from the ceiling. Two mirrored halves
are coming together creating a pendant luminaire. Stripped down and fixed to the wall
they illuminate two opponent corners.
Als Hommage an die nackte Glühbirne, die fast in jedem Haushalt einsam von der Decke
pendelt, finden sich zwei gespiegelte Hälften als Pendelleuchte zu einer ganzen zusammen.
Auseinandergenommen und an einer Wandhalterung fixiert, beleuchtet die vermeintlich
Ganze zwei entgegengesetzte Ecken im Raum.

CRACK ® is a ceramic breadknife and cucumber grater for the preparation of England’s traditional tea sandwich. The contradiction between the association of
fragility relating to china and the attainable hardness and maximum stress of high tech ceramics, forms the basis of the design.
CRACK ® ist ein Keramik-Brotmesser und ein Gurkenhobel für die Zubereitung eines traditionellen englischen Cucumber-Sandwichs. Der Widerspruch zwischen der
Assoziation von Zerbrechlichkeit in Zusammenhang mit klassischem Porzellan und, auf der anderen Seite, der möglichen Härte und Belastbarkeit von Hightech-Keramik,
bildet die Grundlage für den Entwurf.

Serpendo The Finger Shower

Prototype
Serpendo is an innovative product containing multiple advantages comparing
to common hair-wash-showers. Sustainability, ergonomical aspects, low production
costs and the protection of the environment are the principal design
aspects for the development of this system.
Serpendo ist ein innovatives Produkt, das vielfältige Vorteile gegenüber handelsüblichen
Haarwaschbrausen bietet. Wassereinsparung von bis zu 50%, ein
modularer Aufbau ermöglicht ein einfaches Auswechseln der Verschleissteile,
kostengünstige Herstellung durch Verwendung von Halbzeugen, ergonomische
Gestaltung für eine gute Handhabung.
