Preface Hospitals in Austria The Austrian Federal Ministry of Health, Family and Youth (BMGFJ) has now issued the seventh revised edition of “Krankenanstalten in Österreich / Hospitals in Austria”, the directory of all inpatient hospitals in Austria officially registered under the Federal Hospitals Act (KAKuG). The hospitals directory is based on an online database, which is available on the ministry’s website http://www.bmgfj.gv.at (see Gesundheitssystem). It is an address and telephone directory with additional statistical information on hospital resources and services in all of the nine provinces of Austria. The online database allows targeted searches for obtaining information on individual hospitals. This bilingual brochure provides a complete overview of the Austrian hospital sector, and thus constitutes an important supplement to the online directory. It is in great demand both in Austria and abroad and is intended as a working aid for health professionals and to assist interested non-professionals to obtain an informative insight into hospitals in Austria. The brochure can also be downloaded from the website mentioned above. The online version provides the most recent information at any given time whereas the brochure reflects the status of information of March 2008. This means that the online information may vary slightly from the contents of the brochure. The statistical information concerning number of beds, special departments/wards and major medico-technical equipment is based on recent hospital statistics, reflecting the status as at 31 December 2006. Further information on the development of the hospital sector since 1991 is provided on the ministry's bilingual website „Krankenanstalten in Zahlen/Hospitals in figures” (http://www.kaz.bmgfj.gv.at). Information on the Austrian independent outpatient health care centres will be added soon, a separate brochure on this sector will be also available on the ministry’s website. The hospitals directory is a voluntary service provided as part of the public relations work of the Federal Ministry of Health and Women. The ministry cannot guarantee the accuracy of the content. Please send any comments or suggestions on the content of the hospitals directory to: Federal Ministry of Health, Family and Youth Radetzkystraße 2, A-1030 Wien (Vienna) Mrs. Ursula Pigisch Tel. +43-1/711 00-4168 E-Mail: ursula.pigisch@bmgfj.gv.at 16
