FLASHBACK
Was heute kurios erscheint,
wohnten. Der Bayerische Hof war damals schon die Nummer Eins.“
ALWAYS AT YOUR SERVICE
A well-known director receives a phone call and everyone
in the lobby hears about it. What seems strange today was
commonplace at the Bayerischer Hof in the middle of the last century. Bellboys were
responsible for paging guests. And Helmut Reiß was one of them. At the age of 13, he
was hired as a bellboy at the hotel - acquaintances of his family had made the contact.
“I started at the Bayerischer Hof in 1950,” he says. “It was the time when Munich was
beginning to flourish again. Back then, there were three hotels in the city, where celebrities
also stayed. The Bayerischer Hof was already number one back then.”
“I wore a beautiful blue uniform with gold buttons that always had to be polished,”
he recalls. “We stood at reception like soldiers. Our hair had to be combed, our fingernails
clean, our white shirts spotless and our shoes polished. There was a roll call
every morning.” If something had to be done, the porter simply called out “Bellboy!”
- and someone was on the spot. “I got theatre tickets and bouquets of flowers, fetched
the staff for lunch, took luggage and mail upstairs to the rooms, ran errands, called
out guests and passed on telegrams, each letter individually, of course.” Helmut Reiß
worked as a bellboy at the Bayerischer Hof for three years before emigrating to California
with his family. But decades later, he still looks back fondly on his years at the
Bayerischer Hof and says: “I often dream about that time.”
