GALLERY STATEMENT
Galerie Ulrike Hrobsky (formerly Galerie 13) was founded in 1993 and has been located
at its current location in the centre of Vienna near St. Stephen‘s Cathedral since February
2002: 1010 Vienna, Grünangergasse 6, and thus in the immediate vicinity of the major Viennese
museums.
From the very beginning, the gallery has been dedicated to contemporary art with a focus
on spatial content in drawing, painting, sculpture/object and photography - which led to the
existing selection of artists due to the emphasis on sculptural/object-related processing of
such diverse materials as stone, wood, paper and leather. This core of artists, which has
grown over the years, includes established positions on the art market as well as young, upand-coming
talents.
Thus, with the founding of the „EAP“ - - European <strong>Art</strong> Project, 2005 (www.european-art-project.com)
- - to promote young artists - with the gallery owners Jeannette Schmid (CH), Doris
Clerici (NL) and Ulrike Hrobsky/Jakob (A), the participating gallery owners were honoured
with the prize of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce for the best international cooperation
in 2014! This exhibition activity as well as the curation by Galerie Hrobsky at the Papiermachermuseum
(ALFA) Steyrermühl (from 2007 to 2018) provided artists working with and
on paper with an exhibition space of around 300 m² for large-scale paper sculptures. The
exhibitions were documented in a catalogue („dimension FRAGILE“, 2008 - comparison of
Chinese and European paper sculpture) and detailed folders.
Paper is and will therefore remain a focal point of the gallery in any form of processing.
In addition, some positions and projects that have escaped the art market are rediscovered,
promoted and added to the gallery programme. Up to seven exhibitions are shown annually
in the intimate gallery spaces in Vienna‘s city centre, and national and international fairs
are regularly organised. The gallery‘s own publication series now comprises more than 30
catalogues on artists and gallery exhibitions, with a consistent format and design that is easy
to read both in print and electronically.
We are opening our showroom ULRIKE HROBSKY, 1160 Vienna, Grundsteingasse 40,
together with the MASC Foundation (1160 Vienna) during the festivals „GRUNDSTEIN“ and
„MUSAO“, which were founded as an opportunity to develop experimental exhibition concepts
and thus simultaneously expand the exhibitions shown at the City-Galerie.
Presence at <strong>Art</strong> Fairs abroad in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, and Singapore.
ARTISTS
Alexandra Deutsch
Born in 1968 in Karlsruhe
1988 – 1995 studied Fine <strong>Art</strong>s
at Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz.
1992 guest study at École des Beaux <strong>Art</strong>s, Dijon, France.
The object forms in Alexandra Deutsch‘s work are diverse: flowing
lines and curved surfaces, superstructures and casings, ribs and lobes.
Some things protrude while others recede. There are bulges of smaller
elements seemingly moving away from larger ones, tubes and stingers, tentacles, thorn processes,
and bulges. Blue, red, orange, turquoise, green, yellow, and black shine as signal colors, as
found in the animal kingdom. Clearly, nature with its diverse phenomena is a source of inspiration
for the artist. Alexandra Deutsch explores the forms of the organic and the living in her artistic
practice and develops from them a distinct position. (Stefanie Blumenbecker)
She lives and works in Wiesbaden.
Peter Dörflinger
Born in 1957 in Villach
1974 – 1977 apprenticeship in boat building.
Numerous technical trainings and occupations paved the way for the
autodidact to venture into sculpture.
In the late 1970s, he worked for the first time as an assistant to Max
Gangl in the Lauster quarry in Krastal.
From 1979 to 1981, he began his first independent works with stone,
followed by the start of his freelance career as a sculptor with works in
stone and wood.
Since 1998, he has also been using paper as a material for his sculptures.
The central theme for Peter Dörflinger is the construction and creation of spaces. Whether these
spaces, as with stone, emerge through excavation and removal, or, as with wood and paper
works, through the addition of further parts. These sculptures proliferate into the surrounding
space and adapt to it. (Dagmar Chobot) He lives and works in Vienna and Lower Austria.
Rupert Eder
Born in 1968 in Bad Aibling, Bavaria.
1991 – 1995 studied Philosophy at the Jesuit University in Munich,
graduating with a Magister <strong>Art</strong>ium degree.
1999 assistant to Jon Groom.
Encounters with Brice Marden, Sean Scully influence his development
as a freelance artist.
In a time when art is inundated with narrative and illustrative images
and new media, Rupert Eder‘s work aligns with the tradition of abstract
painting of the modern era - an art form that focuses on the essential.
He leads the viewer directly into the world of phenomena, into the realm of pure appearances. His
paintings and drawings invite careful observation; a slow gaze reveals the aesthetic beauty and
immediacy of experience. Rupert Eder creates an emotional quality, bearing witness to a positive
force and an energy that spreads through space, becoming a physical experience for the viewer.
(Nanna Preußners) He lives and works in Dießen am Ammersee.
Bettina Paschke
Born in 1972 in Graz.
Studied architecture in Graz, Venice (Italy), and Oslo (Norway).
2008 – 2014 engaged in independent projects in the fields of art and
culture.
2014 – 2019 project assistance and teaching activities at TU Graz.
Since 2016 Architecture Collection Styria, Archive of TU Graz.
Freelance artistic work since 1998, exhibiting in Austria and Germany.
2005 – 2008 co-founded the POW platform to support local cultural initiatives
between architecture, design, and visual arts.
Since 2018 Member of the artist group „Interferenzen.“
Bettina Paschke‘s drawings are an extract of her surroundings. Absolute minimization, rhythmic
structures, ordered systems, which come alive as the line is allowed to stray from the norm. They
appear like organisms, floating through their self-created world. (Andrea Sandner)
She lives and works in Graz.
ARTISTS
Ulrich Plieschnig
Born in 1959 in Klagenfurt, raised in Gurk.
1979 – 1980 studied painting
at Accademia di Belle <strong>Art</strong>i, Perugia (Italy), under Bruno Orfei.
1980 – 1985 attended the Academy of Fine <strong>Art</strong>s, Vienna, studying painting
under Walter Eckert and Markus Prachensky.
1989 – 1991 stay in New York.
1992 – 1994 scholarship in Paris.
Member of Künstlerhaus Wien, Künstlerhaus Klagenfurt, Verein Kunstwerk Krastal/Kärnten.
From 1994 to 2003, engaged in extended periods of work and performances in Great Britain, Italy,
France, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Japan, Portugal, and South India.
Ulrich Plieschnig, after initially painting figuratively, developed a highly distinctive, reductive visual
language, whose formal and color structure is limited to the typical „Plieschnig colors“: indigo,
ochre, blue, gray, white, and black. These are poured as diluted oil paints onto canvas/paper. The
duality of horizontal and vertical orientation determines the composition. To maintain consistency
as a principle, Plieschnig also pours the background rather than applying it with a brush.
(Silvie Aigner) He lives and works in Vienna.
Maria Temnitschka
Born in 1961 in Lower Austria.
1980 – 1984 studied metal design at the University of Applied <strong>Art</strong>s.
1981 study visit at the University of Applied Sciences for <strong>Art</strong> and Design
in Cologne.
2002 – 2006 studied at the University of Applied <strong>Art</strong>s under Prof. Frohner
and Prof. Müller, chair of painting, graduating with distinction.
Since 2009 lecturer at the University of Applied <strong>Art</strong>s
(University Assistant).
„The task of an artist is to change the value of things.“ - Yoko Ono
In her drawings, the artist - as in her painting - sheds new light on architecture, discarded objects,
and items. The viewer becomes physically lost in them, possibly even mentally. One can almost
see the artist sitting on the chair she has drawn, mentally absent, somewhere else entirely. With
this, she gives the drawn objects a new dimension and meaning. (Hartwig Knack)
She lives and works in Vienna
Tilmann Zahn
Born in 1966 in Osnabrück, raised in Düsseldorf.
He engaged intensively with painting, later adding photography to his
repertoire. He was strongly influenced by the active art scene in Düsseldorf
during the 1970s and 1980s, particularly by Joseph Beuys and
Günther Ueker. He began experimenting with various materials at an
early age, eventually leading him to work with paper through assemblages.
Tilmann Zahn‘s paintings are visions of decline and new creation. They
address disappearance and decay as processes of transformation of the living, which know no
end and constantly produce new things. His works occupy a middle ground between painting and
object, oscillating between fragility and seemingly metallic, constructive architecture. He lives and
works in Basel.
