Ich danke allen, dievor und hinter den Kulissen amgoEast-Festival mitarbeiten, undwünsche inspirierende Festivaltage.© Paul SchneiderHessian State Minister of HigherEducation, Research and the ArtsArt and culture are a form ofbasic necessities. In times wheredemocracy is under fire, we needcultural and scientific literacy morethan ever. Openness, diversity andcollective discussion and action areall fundamental aspects of culturewhen it comes to the protection ofdemocracy. This year's edition of goEast – Festivalof Central and Eastern EuropeanFilm is also characterised by thisstance. Human rights and film'spower to connect are the centraltheme at our Human Rights Sunday, where impressive works will bescreened. In MILLION MOMENTS, forinstance, director Amálie Kovářovádepicts the Czech democracy movementin a haunting manner. Thedocumentary film THE DMITRIEVAFFAIR, directed by Jessica Gorter, takes us along on the trail of YuriDmitriev, who in 1997 discoveredmass graves in Karelia dating fromthe days of the Stalinist Great Terror,in which up to a million individualswere murdered. Ever since, Dmitrievhas attempted to expose thesecrimes, and has been persecuted forhis efforts. The documentary filmIN THE REARVIEW is also moving.Director Maciek Hamela tells thestory of a minibus used to evacuatepeople from war zones followingRussia's attack on Ukraine (in breachof international law), with Hamelahimself at the wheel. But there's more here than watchingfilms. For all of the works shown here, the filmmakers will be present toenter into conversation with the audience. The accompanying programalso features panel discussions anda masterclass. It is these personalencounters between cultures inparticular that make goEast FilmFestival so special. In addition to thetreasured classic cinema experienceit offers, it also invites attendees toengage in dialogue and brings filmfans from a wide range of countriestogether through its extensivesupporting program. I would like tothank everyone working on goEastFilm Festival, both behind and infront of the curtain, and I wish youinspiring festival days.5 GREETINGS

Filme aufeinander. Renommierte
Filmschaffende und aufstrebende

Mittel- und Osteuropa kommen nach
Wiesbaden, um Jurymitglieder und
Zuschauer:innen gleichermaßen mit
ihren Arbeiten zu begeistern.
Das Filmprogramm des Festivals
zeichnet sich durch die Relevanz
der Filme und deren künstlerischen
Anspruch aus. Internationale Koproduktionen
sind ebenso zu sehen
wie nationale Produktionen aus den
Ländern Mittel- und Osteuropas und
Zentralasiens. Im Internationalen
Wettbewerb sehen wir zum Beispiel
den armenischen Dokumentarfilm

Aus Serbien kommt die Horror-Satire

von Mladen Đorđević, in der die über
Jahre ausgebeuteten Arbeiter:innen
eines Orts zu drastischen Mitteln
greifen um sich zu rächen. 14 weitere
Filme laufen im goEast-Wettbewerb
und konkurrieren um die begehrten

Die Vielfalt des mittel- und osteuropäischen
Films drückt sich
auch in den zahlreichen Kurzfilmprogrammen
aus, die dieses Jahr
beim Festival laufen. Zentralasiatische
Kurzfilme, der RheinMain
Kurzfilmwettbewerb, die beliebten
Anarchoshorts – sie alle feiern die
kurze Form, jeweils mit anderem
Schwerpunkt. Das Filmerbe wird
im Symposium dieses Jahr unter
dem Fokus der Geschlechtervielfalt
gezeigt, ein Beweis, wie aktuell
historische Filme doch sein können.
Dass die zahlreichen Gäste des
Festivals dieses auch als Forum des
Austausches und der Begegnung
nutzen, haben die vergangenen
Jahre immer wieder gezeigt. In
diesem Sinne wünsche ich allen
Teilnehmer:innen, Gästen und
