CRUS ARTISANS DU MÉDOC:
33 PROPERTIES SELECTED FOR THE CLASSIFICATION
Qualisud, an independent inspection and certification body, revealed the 2023 classification on May 12.
For these authentic, family-run properties, it offers an endorsement of quality and craftsmanship.
The Crus Artisans will be welcoming 6 new, dynamic personalities this year (5 in the
Médoc appellation and 1 in the Haut-Médoc appellation) who will help extend the
reach of the new classification and its shared values – irreproachable quality of the wines
and accessibility. The 2018 classification featured 36 chateaux – the slight drop this year
is due to producers retiring.
What is a Cru Artisan?
Based on a decree dated 21 October 2022, the classification takes places every 5 years.
Specifications include a visit to the property and a blind tasting of several vintages by
a panel of professionals – shippers, brokers, winemakers and viticulture experts. To be
eligible for Cru Artisan status, the property must be independent, small or medium in
size (approximately 10 hectares) with production of up to 100,000 bottles a year, and not
belong to any co-operative wineries. The artisan winegrower, who can work alone or with
employees, must handle the entire supply chain with passion and
determination, from work in the vineyards to marketing the wines.
