fer even higher performance compared to their respective predecessors,
says sales director Frank Gregory. In parallel, Kraiburg Austria
is also investing into the expansion of capacity at its production site
in Austria, with a quarter of the sum to be invested going into the installation
of a new mixing line for the production of special, high-performance
compounds. Furthermore, buffing capacities will be increased
in the course of the next year. This equipment is used to serve
one of Kraiburg Austria’s new fields of business: elastic rubber floorings
for horse stables, which are sold under the “Belmondo” brand
name. This new field of business, hopes managing director Dr. Starnecker,
is forward-looking and trend-setting but currently is no more
than just a niche business for the Austrian company.
Although the business model has not yet been finally framed and
defined, Kraiburg Austria has shed some light on what it calls another
“essential field for investment.” This field is explained as being
“the development of a technological innovation that will make the retreading
process sustainably more efficient.” Everybody who now
believes that Kraiburg Austria was going to invest into the production
of equipment used in retreading facilities “will be disappointed,”
adds vice president Thorsten Schmidt. Instead,
this field for investment is rather
about procedures that would allow for a
tightening of processes and increased efficiencies
in the pre-cured retreading
business. According optimisations in the
production process with customers will
be “a very essential part of our future
strategic direction,” says Dr. Starnecker.
However, details of this new business
model cannot yet be disclosed even
though the major direction is already
clearly set. Something that can be
disclosed at this stage is that Kraiburg
Austria is cooperating with well-known
producers of retreading machinery and
equipment and with independent research
facilities.
So to summarise; firstly, the new
strategic corporate goals are directed at
products, with which Kraiburg Austria is
attempting to remain a successful
retreading material and tread supplier in
the European market, and to allow for a
“clear positioning” of the company, says sales director Frank Gregory.
By the way: Kraiburg Austria is no longer following extra-European
retreading business interests after a joint venture with Malaysia’s
Goodway (founded in the early 1990s) was cancelled after ten
years. “We have drawn a line under our retreading businesses outside
of Europe.” Instead of that, Kraiburg Austria now focuses on its
“European core market.”
And secondly, the new strategic corporate goals are directed at
possible innovations that will be offered to retreaders across Europe.
These innovations will make the ultimate difference in comparing
Kraiburg Austria with many other retreading material and tread suppliers
from outside of Europe, Dr Starnecker and his co-executives

duktionskapazitäten erweitern. Ein Viertel des Investitionsvolumens
fließe etwa in die Installation einer zusätzlichen Mischerlinie für
Hochleistungsmischungen; aber auch die Raustraßenkapazitäten
werden bis 2008 erweitert. Diese Anlage diene auch einem der neuesten
Geschäftszweige: Unter der Marke „Belmondo“ fertigt Kraiburg
Gummibodenbeläge für die Pferdehaltung, ein – so hofft Geschäftsführer
Dr. Starnecker – zukunftsweisendes Geschäft, das
allerdings im Moment noch nicht mehr als eine Nische für Kraiburg
darstelle.
Obwohl das Geschäftsmodell noch nicht abschließend formuliert
ist, kündet Kraiburg Austria dennoch von einem weiteren „entscheidenden
Investitionsbereich“, und zwar der „Entwicklung einer
technologischen Innovation, die das Runderneuerungsverfahren
nachhaltig wirtschaftlicher“ gestalten soll. Wer nun glaubt, Kraiburg
Austria werde beginnen, in die Fertigung von Runderneuerungsanlagen
zu investieren, werde enttäuscht, so Vice-President Thorsten
Schmidt. Es gehe dabei vielmehr um Verfahren, mit denen Prozesse
gestrafft und Effizienzen im Kalterneuerungsprozess gesteigert werden

ren beim Kunden seien „ein ganz wesentlicher Teil unserer strategischen
Ausrichtung“, so Geschäftsführer Starnecker weiter. Details
zu diesem neuen Geschäftsmodell könne man noch nicht preisgeben,
auch wenn die grundsätzliche Linie bereits festliege. Nur so
viel: Man werde mit Maschinenherstellern und Forschungseinrichtungen
kooperieren.
Die neuen strategischen Zielsetzungen umfassen also einerseits
die Produkte, mit denen Kraiburg Austria am europäischen Runderneuerungsmarkt
weiterhin erfolgreich sein will und mit denen das
Unternehmen eine „eindeutige Positionierung“ abgebe, so Vertriebsleiter
