Leading Envelope Producer in Business for 75 Years Robbins LLC was founded in 1921 by Stanley Robbins and at that time was known as Robbins Tire and Rubber Company. As a regional manufacturer of inner tubes, the company grew to become a major international supplier of inner tubes, retreading materials and commercial flooring products. Poncet Davis Sr. purchased Robbins Tire and Rubber Company in the early 1940’s and it is currently wholly owned by his son, Poncet Davis Jr., his son. Today the company uses modern equipment such as the Krupp GK-250 intermeshing rotor mixer, which it added in 2004. In July of 2004 Robbins purchased the Hoover-Hanes plant in Tallapoosa, Georgia giving an additional custom mixing capacity of 195 million pounds annually as well as a dedicated colour mixing unit and a 72” inverted L calender. Robbins LLC is ISO 9001-2000 Certified. Robbins now distributes inner tubes and focuses its manufacturing experience on producing and distributing high quality curing tubes and envelopes to the retreading industry and specialised custom mixed rubber compounds to other rubber product manufacturing companies. According to the company, Robbins is the world’s largest manufacturer of envelopes for the pre-cured retreading process. In 1945 Mr. Davis Sr. purchased a second inner tube plant in Tuscumbia, Alabama from the government as World War II concluded. When the arrival of the tubeless tyre led many to abandon inner tubes, Robbins continued to enjoy strong demand until the equipment was sold to Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. in 1995. Robbins entered into the flooring products business in the early 1950’s and also gained international reputation as a quality supplier of commercial flooring products, however the floor covering plant was sold to UK-based Marley PLC 1997. In 1971 Robbins added pre-cured tread rubber, precured envelopes and curing tubes to its line of products. In 1994 Robbins purchased Ultima Rubber Company of Social Circle, Georgia and moved all tread rubber manufacturing to Social Circle and became a major factor in the mould cure, pre-cure and custom rubber mixing industries. Ultima Rubber was sold to The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1997. In June 2002 Robbins LLC announced a substantial plant expansion and modernisation programme, including a new mixing line and a new 167 square metre testing and quality control lab. The news came shortly after Robbins acquired all the assets of Presti Rubber Products Inc., which manufactured curing tubes and envelopes for retreading plus custom mixing of rubber compounds. The sale of Ultima to Goodyear did not include the Muscle Shoals plant that produced curing tubes and envelopes or the custom mix sales volume being produced in Social Circle. Presti Rubber Products was a producer and distributor of retreading envelopes for light truck through large OTR envelopes, using compression moulding technology for the light, medium and heavy duty truck tyres. The Presti equipment has since been relocated to the Muscle Shoals, Alabama facility and in the near future all envelopes produced for use in the retreading of truck tyres will be manufactured using the compression moulding technology. cja 28 Führender Hüllenfabrikant seit 75 Jahren im Markt Die Robbins LLC, eigenen Angaben zufolge weltweit größter Hersteller von Außenhüllen für die Kaltrunderneuerung, und Hersteller von Heizschläuchen wurde 1921 durch Stanley Robbins gegründet und wurde zunächst als Robbins Tire and Rubber Company betrieben. Im Laufe der Jahre wurde der Betrieb – zunächst noch Hersteller von Schläuchen – von einem regionalen Anbieter im US-Bundesstaat Alabama zu einem der wichtigsten internationalen Anbieter von Schläuchen, Runderneuerungsmaterialien und Fußbodenbelägen ausgebaut. Seit Poncet Davis sen. das Unternehmen in den 1940er Jahren übernahm, ist Robbins im Familienbesitz und wird heute von Poncet Davis jun. geleitet. Das Unternehmen nutzt in seiner Produktionsstätte modernstes Mischereiequipment. Robbins ist nach ISO 9001-2000 zertifiziert. 1945 – am Ende des zweiten Weltkriegs – erwarb Poncet Davis sen. einen Schlauchhersteller in Tuscumbia (Alabama/USA) und somit eine zweite Produktionsstätte. Während andere nach dem Marktdurchbruch des Schlauchlosreifens die Herstellung von Schläuchen aufgaben, konnte Robbins sich noch etliche Jahre über eine starke Nachfrage freuen. 1995 dann wurde aber das Equipment der Schlauchfertigung aus Tuscumbia an Cooper Tire & Rubber verkauft. Robbins begann bereits in den frühen 1950er Jahren mit der Herstellung von Bodenbelägen und erlangte damit ebenfalls internationale Anerkennung. Die entsprechende Fabrik wurde dann aber 1997 an Marley PLC aus Großbritannien verkauft. 1971 begann Robbins dann mit der Herstellung von vorvulkanisierten Laufstreifen – einer neuen, zukunftsweisenden Technologie – , Außenhüllen und Heizschläuchen für die Runderneuerung. 1994 übernahm Robbins dann das Unternehmen Ultima Rubber Company aus Social Circle (Georgia) und konzentrierte dort zunächst seine Produktionskapazitäten für die Herstellung von Kaltlaufstreifen; außerdem wurden dort später auch Mischungen für die Heißerneuerung sowie Mischungen für die gummiverarbeitende Industrie gefertigt. Ultima Rubber wurde dann aber 1997 an die Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. verkauft. Der Verkauf umfasste allerdings nicht die Ultima-Fabrik in Muscle Shoals (Alabama), wo weiterhin Heizschläuche und Hüllen für die Runderneurung gerfertigt wurden. Im Juni 2002 kündigte Robbins LLC dann den umfassenden Ausbau der noch bestehenden Fabrik an, etwa durch die Installation einer neuen Mischerlinie und der Einrichtung eines modernen Testlabors. Diese Ankündigung kam kurz nach dem Robbins das Unternehmen Presti Rubber Products Inc. übernommen hatte – ebenfalls ein Hersteller von Heizschläuchen und Außenhüllen wie auch von Runderneuerungsmaterialien. Die Fertigungsanlagen von Presti Rubber wurden daraufhin demontiert und in der ehemaligen Ultima- Fabrik in Muscle Shoals wieder errichtet, dem heutigen Hauptsitz des Unternehmens. Im Juli 2004 übernahm Robbins die Mischerei von Hoover-Hanes in Tallapoosa (Georgia/USA) und erlangte somit zusätzliche Mischerkapazitäten in Höhe von 88.000 Tonnen jährlich. cja/ab
Watts Polymers sold to Berwin Group Compound Production Remains in Lydney Earlier this summer, Watts Industrial Polymers Ltd was sold to Berwin Group Ltd. According to Berwin, the acquisition, combined with the existing Berwin Group business, further consolidates Berwin’s position as the UK’s largest rubber custom compounder and broadens its coverage in business segments and markets not previously covered by Berwin. It also means Watts of Lydney Group Ltd, which recently became a certified Toyota supplier, will concentrate on developing its two main business areas: Watts Industrial Tyres Plc a leading global provider of industrial tyres and services to the materials handling market, and Watts Truck Centre Ltd a regional truck and van dealership operating in Gloucester, Hereford, Worcester and Yate. According to press release giving details of the sale, manufacturing of the Watts compound range will remain at its Lydney site. Berwin is reported to be confident the acquisition will enable the Lydney site to continue its growth and further expand its global presence. The acquisition increases Berwin’s group turnover to 52 million euros, Watts Industrial Polymers adding 18 million. Now operating 12 manufacturing lines from two sites, its product range includes all major elastomer types from FKM to NR and Thermoplastic PVC, PVC/NBR compounds in lot sizes from one batch to full loads, in both black and colours. Berwin also announced the upgrade of a line at its Manchester site. Diese Akquisition werde laut Berwin den Stand der Gruppe als führender Hersteller von Gummimischungen weiter ausbauen; Berwin war bisher nicht in der Herstellung von Materialien für die Reifenrunderneuerung engagiert. Die Akquisition bedeute aber gleichzeitig auch den Ausbau der beiden anderen zentralen Geschäftsfelder von Watts, das erst kürzlich als Erstausrüster für Toyota zertifiziert wurde. Einerseits werde Watts Industrial Tyres Plc weiterentwickelt, also der Hersteller von Industriereifen. Andererseits soll auch der Nutzfahrzeughandel unter Watts Truck Centre Ltd. mit den Niederlassungen in Gloucester, Hereford, Worcester und Yate weiter ausgebaut werden. Einer offiziellen Pressemitteilung zufolge werde Watts auch künftig Materialien für die Reifenrunderneuerung am Standort in Lydney fertigen. Berwin werde versuchen, den Standort und die weltweite Präsenz des Unternehmens weiter auszubauen.
