Two years ago in September 2005 the Malaysian company foun<strong>de</strong>d yet another subsidiary, the distribution organisation Goodway Europe (Swe<strong>de</strong>n) AB. Goodway’s European subsidiary is based in Molnlycke, close to the Swedish city of Gothenburg, and is run by Paolo Borgianni as managing director. The native of Italy is married to a Swedish wife who in turn acts as a representative in Swe<strong>de</strong>n for a number of Italian companies from the retreading industry. Consequently, Swe<strong>de</strong>n seemed to be the most suitable location to start Goodway’s European business, particularly as corporate taxes are below the European average. Since the European distribution arm was foun<strong>de</strong>d two years ago, Goodway Europe has hired sales representatives in Swe<strong>de</strong>n, Germany and Italy. In an interview with Tyres & Accessories, Paolo Borgianni explains that his young company today focuses on the distribution of its own “Goodway Supercool” brand pre-cured treads, which is placed in the “quality segment” of the European retreading market. It goes without saying that these products are sold together with cushion gums and si<strong>de</strong>wall veneers. The company is also consi<strong>de</strong>ring commencing the distribution of rubber compounds for mould-cured retreading in Europe. These compounds are sold elsewhere un<strong>de</strong>r the brand name “Supertrac- Orbistrip,” or in short “Orbi”. “We shall promote it very soon,” replies Mr Borgianni when asked about the time schedule of bringing these products onto the European market. The managing director is convinced that the pre-cured tread business in Europe offers reasonably good business opportunities for companies from outsi<strong>de</strong> Europe, even though the overall market share of retreads in Europe is <strong>de</strong>creasing while the truck tyre market in total is showing slightly stronger growth than the retread market. “The market in Europe is consolidating,” says Mr Borgianni, and increasingly more outsi<strong>de</strong> brands are coming into the market and shrinking the market share held by all the well-established European brands. Because companies like Goodway Europe can offer quality at competitive prices, it can gain market share there where well-established retreading brands are competing against cheap imported new tyres from the Far East and losing. “With our premium products we give the European retrea<strong>de</strong>r the chance to fight against the cheap and unsafe new tyres invading the market.” Sales representatives from Goodway Europe in particular use two main arguments while selling precured treads produced in Malaysia: “Our prices are very competitive and value-for-money. But Goodway has a high quality product that matches the top few European manufacturers.” For some years the European retread market has been a mature market with well-established structures and market players. In such an economic market environment it was difficult for Goodway to introduce itself as a system supplier or even to establish itself as a supplier of such. Many observers also believe that the time for system suppliers is over and that these long-term relations with system suppliers are being replaced by an increasingly cutthroat competition that’s leading to more and more volatile relations, particularly now that the technology for pre-cured retreading has been implemented in many markets and machinery is available everywhere. Die Tochtergesellschaft <strong>de</strong>s an <strong>de</strong>r Börse in Kuala Lumpur gelisteten Unternehmens ist in Molnlycke in <strong>de</strong>r Nähe von Göteborg in Schwe<strong>de</strong>n ansässig und wird von Paolo Borgianni als Geschäftsführer geleitet. Der gebürtige Italiener ist mit einer Schwedin verheiratet, die wie<strong>de</strong>rum italienische Unternehmen aus <strong>de</strong>r Run<strong>de</strong>rneuerungsbranche in Schwe<strong>de</strong>n vertritt, folglich schien Schwe<strong>de</strong>n als Unternehmensstandort für Goodway Europe durchaus zweckmäßig, zumal dort Unternehmenssteuern vergleichsweise niedrig sind. Seit <strong>de</strong>r Gründung <strong>de</strong>r europäischen Vertriebstochter vor zwei Jahren operiert Goodway Europe mit Außendienstmitarbeitern in Schwe<strong>de</strong>n, Deutschland und in Italien. Das junge Unternehmen, so Paolo Borgianni im Gespräch mit <strong>de</strong>r NEUE REIFENZEITUNG, konzentriere sich dabei auf die Vermarktung von Kaltlaufstreifen <strong>de</strong>r eigenen Marke „Goodway Supercool“, die im „Qualitätssegment“ <strong>de</strong>s Marktes platziert wer<strong>de</strong>n. Dass dazu natürlich auch Bin<strong>de</strong>gummi und Seitenwän<strong>de</strong> gehören, versteht sich. Man <strong>de</strong>nke gegenwärtig auch darüber nach, auf <strong>de</strong>m europäischen Markt Materialien für die Heißrun<strong>de</strong>rneuerung (bekannt unter <strong>de</strong>m Markennamen „Supertrac-Orbistrip“ o<strong>de</strong>r in Kurzform „Orbi“) einzuführen, dies wer<strong>de</strong> man bereits „in naher Zukunft“ tun. Das Laufstreifengeschäft in Europa biete Unternehmen von außerhalb Europas – trotz sinken<strong>de</strong>r Marktanteile <strong>de</strong>r Run<strong>de</strong>rneuerung bei insgesamt leicht wachsen<strong>de</strong>r Nachfrage auf <strong>de</strong>m Nutzfahrzeugreifenmarkt – verhältnismäßig gute Wachstumschancen, zeigt sich <strong>de</strong>r Geschäftsführer von Goodway Europe (Swe<strong>de</strong>n) AB überzeugt. „Der Run<strong>de</strong>rneuerungsmarkt in Europa konsolidiert sich“, so Paolo Borgianni, es kämen immer mehr Marken von außerhalb hinzu und setzten <strong>de</strong>n etablierten Marken zu. Da Unternehmen wie Goodway Europe Qualität zu wettbewerbsfähigen Preisen lieferten, so Borgianni weiter, gewinne man insbeson<strong>de</strong>re dort, wo bisherige Kun<strong>de</strong>n etablierter Run<strong>de</strong>rneuerer und Run<strong>de</strong>rneuerungsmarken günstige Neureifen aus <strong>de</strong>m Fernen Osten als Alternative in Betracht zu ziehen. „Mit unseren Qualitätsprodukten hat <strong>de</strong>r europäische Run<strong>de</strong>rneuerer die Chance, gegen billige und unsichere Neureifen anzukämpfen, die Europa überschwemmen.“ Das Team von Goodway Europe hat dabei im Wesentlichen zwei Verkaufsargumente für die in Malaysia hergestellten Laufstreifen: „Unsere Preise sind äußerst wettbewerbsfähig. Aber Goodway bietet auch ein qualitativ hochwertiges Produkt, das es mit <strong>de</strong>n wenigen europäischen Topherstellern aufnehmen kann.“ Der europäische Run<strong>de</strong>rneuerungsmarkt ist seit Jahren ein reifer Markt mit etablierten Strukturen und Marktteilnehmern. In einem solchen Marktumfeld ist es schwierig, sich als Systemanbieter einzuführen, geschweige <strong>de</strong>nn sich zu etablieren. Viele Beobachter sind außer<strong>de</strong>m <strong>de</strong>r Meinung, dass die Zeit <strong>de</strong>r Systemgeber vorüber ist und ein zunehmend härter geführter Verdrängungswettbewerb an die Stelle langfristiger Beziehungen zu einem Systemgeber tritt, zumal die Technologie für die Kalterneuerung etabliert und aller-
