DECOMMISSIONING AND WASTE MANAGEMENT 50
| Fig. 2
3D seismic image of the «Nördlich Lägern» site area of NAGRA for the establishment of a radioactive waste disposal site for all radioactive waste categories in
north-eastern Switzerland (Nagra, NAB 18-35, figure 6-13). Tentative interpretation of a top Opalinus Clay volumetric dip horizon slice. The image shows a
attribute horizon slice with tectonical faults interpreted on the basis of seismic amplitudes (red lines) and additional lineaments tentatively interpreted on the
basis of the attribute slice (blue lines with D1 to D3 discussed in the text). BIH: Baden – Irchel – Herdern Lineament; Eg: Eglisau Fault; Sb: Strassberg Fault; SIA:
Siglistorf Anticline; WGE: Weiach – Glattfelden – Eglisau Lineament.
Completed by the authors: Location of Haberstal surface facilities, approximative position of NAGRA deep geological disposal area and potential tectonically
undisturbed an diposal by areas.
Below the planned repository is the thick and so far
mostly unexplored Permo-Carboniferous trough
with its coal beds and other suspected and possibly
future exploitable resources (gas, deep water,
etc.). 26 To the north and south, the siting area is
limited by two large tectonic fault zones (marginal
trough faults of the Permo-Carboniferous trough).
In the center of the area, another fault zone follows,
which divides the siting area into two approximately
equally large, but angled areas of about 7 km 2
each (Figure 2). 27 The complex geometry of these
subareas is poorly usable for a deep repository and
further limits the available space underground. In
addition, there are uncertainties regarding the density
of minor tectonic faults in the selected subareas.
Finally, the repository «cassette» is threatened from
the surface by an increasingly dense gaggle of geothermal
probes up to 400 m deep. 28 All in all: not
good conditions for a successful conclusion of the
Swiss siting procedure.
