The biographic details regarding Adolf Schudel, a photographer from Switzerland,
are sparse.
Schudel worked as a retoucher in photography studio in Reutlingen. He lived for
a time in Paris after this.
He never founded his own family. After his father died, he assumed responsibility
for his mother and his five siblings.
Schudel attempted to kill himself in 1897 in a hotel in Basel, which caused him
to admitted to the Schaffhausen Clinic and released two years later.
He was returned to the clinic by the police in 1907, after beating his mother.
While in the clinic, Schudel feared poisoned food (“nasty business”), constantly
felt exhausted and ill, heard voices and frequently attempted to escape.
Adolf Schudel began to draw from reference artworks in 1907. He spoke of
snakes and monsters that scared him. In addition, he feared that his dead father
had risen from the dead.
Drawing and writing calmed him more than hours in an extended bath.
As written on his case sheet at the Schaffhausen Clinic, Schudel died in 1918
from a “rupture of the heart”.
