Appendix: List <strong>of</strong> Yugoslavian/Slovenian* <strong>Vol</strong>unteers<br />
In the year 1971 within the project "<strong>The</strong> Yugoslavs in the Spanish Civil War" there were 1664<br />
Yugoslav volunteers’ listed. This list contains 1910 persons who have roots from ‘Yugoslavia’.<br />
This enlarged list takes in account the results <strong>of</strong> new international research (Biographical<br />
Projects concerning Yugoslav volunteers) which points to the following categories:<br />
- Eco<strong>no</strong>mic emigrants from ‘Yugoslav’ countries before World War I and between the two<br />
World Wars;<br />
- Political emigrants from Yugoslavia between the two World Wars and after World War II;<br />
- Slovenes <strong>of</strong> Friuli, Giulini, Istria, Trieste and Gorizia who were annexed by Fascist Italy after<br />
World War I (statistics took them as Italians);<br />
- Slovenes <strong>of</strong> Carinthia and Styria living after World War I under the Republic <strong>of</strong> Austria<br />
(statistics took them as Austrians);<br />
- Croats from the Croatian Littoral, Gorski Kotar and Istria (statistics took them as Italians);<br />
- Macedonians from Bulgaria (statistics took them as Bulgarians).<br />
‘Yugoslav’ volunteers who have roots from ‘Slovene’ countries (~550) are on this list marked<br />
with asterisk /*/.<br />
