The International Newletter of Communist Studies Online XIII (2007), no 20 63 Appendix: List of Yugoslavian/Slovenian* Volunteers In the year 1971 within the project "The Yugoslavs in the Spanish Civil War" there were 1664 Yugoslav volunteers’ listed. This list contains 1910 persons who have roots from ‘Yugoslavia’. This enlarged list takes in account the results of new international research (Biographical Projects concerning Yugoslav volunteers) which points to the following categories: - Economic emigrants from ‘Yugoslav’ countries before World War I and between the two World Wars; - Political emigrants from Yugoslavia between the two World Wars and after World War II; - Slovenes of Friuli, Giulini, Istria, Trieste and Gorizia who were annexed by Fascist Italy after World War I (statistics took them as Italians); - Slovenes of Carinthia and Styria living after World War I under the Republic of Austria (statistics took them as Austrians); - Croats from the Croatian Littoral, Gorski Kotar and Istria (statistics took them as Italians); - Macedonians from Bulgaria (statistics took them as Bulgarians). ‘Yugoslav’ volunteers who have roots from ‘Slovene’ countries (~550) are on this list marked with asterisk /*/.
