Abstracts Primus Conventus Austriacus Archaeometriae - MMIX
very high artistic quality and important epigraphical content. The most prominent
archaeometrical content of a marble slab shows the following inscription: [Pro sal(ute)
Imp(eratoris)] Caes(aris) M(arci) Aur(elii) Antonini / [Augusti ---]us tabulam marmor(is)
can(didi) ded(it).
In the frame of this study the provenance of marble objects from the important Roman
metropolis of Carnuntum, situated East of Vienna, were investigated. Because of the
importance of the site and objects it was just possible to take a small number of samples (29)
for detailed investigations like analysis of petrographical thin sections and geochemical
analysis. To get the most possible information from the entity of the Carnuntum marble
objects macroscopic grouping of the samples was used to chose the samples for laboratory
investigations. By macroscopic criteria nine groups were defined under which nearly 80% of
the Carnuntum marble objects could be subsumed.
Marble objects made from local Hiesberg marble could already be clearly identified by their
macroscopic appearance. The results of the macroscopic, microscopic and geochemical
investigation show that most of the coarse and medium grained marbles originate from
Gummern (Carinthia, Austria) and from Pohorje (Slovenia), while the fine grained are mostly
imported Mediterranean marbles.
