Kurhaus Merano
Liebe Musikfreunde,
Dear music lovers,
this year we dare to set out for unknown worlds of
sound with new auditory impressions and a look
into an exciting musical future: in August and September
the südtirol festival merano . meran will
present, along with world stars who have written
musical history in the past decades, a younger
generation who are changing the experience of
the classical repertoire today with their innovative
interpretations. Many of these outstanding musicians
have never played in Merano before, such as
the Swedish clarinettist Martin Fröst, the violoncellist
Nicolas Altstaedt, the multi-award-winning
Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang, the Czech
singer Magdalena Kožená, the US violinist Joshua
Bell, the British conductor Robin Ticciati, the
Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, the
Japanese violinist Sayaka Shoji or the Norwegian
pianist Leiv Ove Andsnes - and this selection also
proves the exclusiveness of our festival, which is
one of the highlights of the European classical
music landscape.
We would like to thank all our sponsors for their support
- and wish our visitors great joy at our concerts.

Himmlische Musik
in Leipzig.
Heavenly music
The sloppy beginning of a downfall: the opera was “extremely
difficult to execute and everyone admires the
good performance of it after such a short period of
study”, was written in the Prague “Oberpostamtszeitung”
after the premiere of “Don Giovanni”. Mozart is
said to have hastily written down the short overture to
his dramma giocoso, which ends in the Inferno, a few
hours before the premiere. His clarinet concerto would
“give pleasure to every listener if he only has feeling for
this heavenly music”, the reviewer of the “Allgemeine
Musikalische Zeitung” in Leipzig rejoiced in 1802. The
piece was written in 1791 - shortly before his death -
for the clarinettist of the Imperial Court Orchestra Anton
Paul Stadler and is thus one of his last works ever.
Mediterranean images of nature characterise Mendelssohn’s
Fourth Symphony. “It will be the funniest piece I
have written,” the 22-year-old composer wrote in 1831
about the classical hit, which musically processes the
impressions of an “Italian journey”.

gewidmet. Mit dem heiteren Wohlklang seines großartigen
A-Dur-Konzerts will Mozart das störrische
Leggerezza abissale
e Charles Gounod vuole convincere i francesi amanti
dell’opera dei meriti della musica orchestrale. Scrive
Abysmal lightness
The French lute masters of the 16th century honoured
princes and artists with a “Tombeau”. What began as a
dance suite and homage to 18th-century French music
became a memorial to the victims of the First World War
in 1917. Each movement of the “Suite pour le piano” is
dedicated to a killed soldier from Ravel’s circle of friends.
Mozart wants to win back the stubborn Viennese audience
with the cheerful euphony of his magnificent A
major concerto, and Charles Gounod wants to convince
the opera-mad French of the merits of orchestral music.
He writes his second symphony in 1855 for the “Société
des jeunes artistes”. A courageous decision: “A French
composer who had the audacity to venture into the field
of instrumental music had no other means than to give a
concert himself and invite friends and critics to attend.
The actual audience was not to be thought of”, Camille
Saint-Saëns noted as late as 1880.

wieder entdeckt. Heute gehört es zum anspruchsvollsten,
was die Celloliteratur zu bieten hat.
letteratura violoncellistica.

Certainly no aristocratic divertimento: the French Revolution
shakes up aristocratic society - and Beethoven
translates the change into a sound that shocks his contemporaries.
In this way, the “Eroica” changes the history
of European music. “I am not satisfied with my previous
works; from now on I want to enter a new path”, he
announces in 1802 - and on the “new path” lies his powerful
Hero Symphony, “written down to celebrate the
memory of a great man”. The composer disappointedly
deletes the original dedicatee Napoleon from his score,
after the former general of the Revolution crowned
himself emperor. Wagner celebrates the birth of his son
Siegfried with homage music for his wife Cosima, and
the score of Haydn’s concerto, thought to have been
lost, is rediscovered in Prague’s National Museum in
1961. Today it is one of the most demanding works in
the cello literature.

dell‘Est. Le miniature scintillanti e pittoresche di Mussorgsky
forniscono scorci in un’idilliaca casa d’infanzia,
Shostakovich nelle sue memorie. Anche i suoi romanzi
satirici basati sulle poesie dell’autore pre-rivoluzionario
Sascha Tschorny, che versa un mordace disprezzo
sui filistei reazionari, contengono sfumature oscure e

in seinen Memoiren.
Sound Images of the Past
Brahms songs from the German Romanticism meet three
cycles by Eastern European composers. Mussorgsky’s
lurid and onomatopoeic miniatures provide insights
into an idyllic childhood home, and Bartók arranges folk
songs from Slovakia that he recorded during his field
research with a portable Edison phonograph. Jewish
music can “appear joyful and in reality be deeply tragic.
It is almost always laughter through tears”, Shostakovich
wrote in his memoirs. Even his satirical romances
based on poems by the pre-revolutionary author Sascha
Tschorny, who pours biting scorn on reactionary philistines,
contain dark and sarcastic undertones despite
their parodic tone. The song “Die Nachkommen” ends
with the verses “Ich leb heute und erbärmlich ist mein
“Today is like always, year after
year” or: not much can be expected from the present.

Eine Liebeserklärung
Ohne Schmerzen keine Liebe, klagt der französische Poet
und Romancier Louis Aragon in seinem Gedicht „Il n‘y a
pas d‘amour heureux“. Mit leidenschaftlicher Musik versucht
Bela Bartók Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts eine quälende
Liebeskrankheit zu kurieren „Ich falle von einem
Extrem ins andere.
A declaration of love
No pain, no love, laments the French poet and novelist
Louis Aragon in his poem “Il n’y a pas d’amour
heureux”. With passionate music, Bela Bartók tries to
cure a tormenting love sickness at the beginning of
the 20th century “I fall from one extreme to another.
A letter from you, even a line, a word from you makes
me rejoice, another almost makes me cry, it hurts me
so much”, he writes to the violinist Stefi Geyer, who
does not return his advances. He gave the woman the
score of the First Violin Concerto, composed in 1908,
which she did not perform until 1958. After a “spiritual
intoxication”, the sound worlds of the Fifth Symphony
unfold, with which Mahler opens the 20th century.
The “Adagietto” in the third movement becomes the
leitmotif in Visconti’s film “Death in Venice” based on
the novella by Thomas Mann, whose “hero of weakness”
Gustav von Aschenbach wears Mahler’s mask
in his first name and in his choice of age.

Romantik pur
Jahrhunderts buchstäblich „in aller Munde“.
beendigt hat, fängt ihn der andere wieder von vorn an;
pianoforte romantico. Brahms completa la sua prima
sinfonia nel 1874 - 21 anni dopo i primi schizzi. L’ombra
Pure Romanticism
© coeurope.org
Robin Ticciati
The “Freischütz” is the first German romantic opera and
its songs are literally “on everyone’s lips” in the 1920s.
“The ‘Kasparlied’ and the ‘Jägerchor’ are probably
shouted out now and then by an illuminated student for
variety in the humming, but the ‘Jungfernkranz’ is permanent;
when one has finished it, the other starts it all
over again; yes, I almost think the dogs in the street bark
it,” Heinrich Heine reports. In the 1840s, Schumann develops
a “middle ground between symphony, concerto
and great sonata” into the first Romantic piano concerto.
Brahms completes his first symphony in 1874 - 21
years after the first sketches. Beethoven’s long shadow
is audible here. Asked about the “strange” proximity of
the C major theme in the finale to the hymn to joy in
the fourth movement of the ninth symphony, Brahms is
said to have remarked: “Yes, and even stranger is that
every donkey hears it the same way”.

Seinen
Liedzyklus nach Eichendorff-Gedichten komponiert er
im Alter von 14 Jahren. In „Was du mir bist“ aus den
1929 gedruckten „Drei Liedern“ macht die Liebe neue
Hoffnung: „Kannst du noch fragen? Was du mir bist:
mein Glaube an das Glück.“
Notte e addio
Korngold emigra negli Stati Uniti e fa rapidamente
carriera nell’industria cinematografica.
all’età di 14 anni. In “Was du mir bist” (Cosa sei per me)
Night and farewell
“Pass away, world”: Schubert songs - and among them
early works such as the setting of Goethe’s “Erlkönig”,
which the 18-year-old composer “glowingly” threw down
on paper in 1815 - form the framework for a matinee
programme of art songs dominated by wistful farewells,
sombre dream scenes and visions of death. In Mahler’s
family, the imagination becomes reality “Often I think they
have only gone out, soon they will get home again”: From
1901 to 1904 he writes “Kindertotenlieder” after poems
by Friedrich Rückert. Only three years later his daughter
Anna died of diphtheria. After the “Anschluss” of Austria
to the German Reich, the child prodigy Erich Wolfgang Korngold
emigrates to the USA and quickly makes a career
in the film industry. He composed his song cycle based on
Eichendorff poems at the age of 14. In “Was du mir bist”
(What you are to me) from the “Drei Lieder” (Three Songs)
printed in 1929, love gives new hope: “Can you still ask?
What you are to me: my faith in happiness.”

Goethes Trauerspiel „Egmont“ nimmt Beethoven ebenso
Freedom and music
This is music of enigmatic beauty: in Tchaikovsky’s Violin
Concerto, “it is no longer the violin that is played, but
the violin that is ruffled, torn, blued”, rumbled the critic
Eduard Hanslick after the first performance in Vienna in
December 1881. Behind the work, written in the idyllic
surroundings of Lake Geneva - and far from the battlefield
of Moscow - lie a disastrous marriage that breaks
up after three months, the flight abroad and a mental
breakdown. Expressively, the piece unites a lack of stability
and melancholy with new hope and pulsating joie
de vivre, and pushes soloists to their limits with technical
refinements. Freedom and music: In the overture
to Goethe’s tragedy “Egmont”, Beethoven takes a stand
against the “tyrant” Napoleon, as he does in the 7th
Symphony, which was premiered in Leipzig in 1813 a few
weeks after the “Battle of the Nations” and ends in the
fourth movement with a militarily taut reference to the

in seiner Musik. Ein Jahr zuvor war er in die
Sowjetunion umgezogen und das von Verehrern des
französischen Violinisten Robert Soetens in Auftrag
Jahrhunderts
zurückgreift. Die ersten Skizzen zu seiner monumentalen
2. Sinfonie schreibt Sibelius 1901 in Rapallo
und Florenz. Im Andante-Satz glaubt der Dirigent der
ersten Schallplattenaufnahme Robert Kajanus den
„flammenden Protest gegen all das Unrecht“ zu hören
– eine Anspielung auf die finnische Unabhängigkeitsbewegung
im damaligen russischen Zarenreich,
obwohl Sibelius kein politisches Programm über seine
Musik gestellt hatte.
indipendenza finlandese nell’allora impero zarista russo,
Back to the future
Popularity instead of avantgarde: one must compose in
a “clear language” that “must not be the old one, but a
new one” - this is how Prokofiev describes the “new simplicity”
in his music in an article for “Pravda” in 1937. A
year earlier he had moved to the Soviet Union and the Violin
Concerto, commissioned by admirers of the French
violinist Robert Soetens and premiered in Madrid in
December 1935, is committed to this “clarity” - even if
the “new” style here draws on “old” classical models of
form and 19th century virtuosity. Sibelius wrote the first
sketches for his monumental 2nd Symphony in Rapallo
and Florence in 1901. In the Andante movement, the conductor
of the first recording, Robert Kajanus, believes
he hears the “flaming protest against all the injustice”
- an allusion to the Finnish independence movement
in the then Russian Tsarist Empire, although Sibelius
had not placed a political programme above his music.

an seinen Vater.
38. Sinfonie lässt er das heitere Menuett am
Schluss aus, weil sich die wehmütige Grundstimmung
– auch angesichts der Entfremdung vom Wiener Adelspublikum
– nicht verscheuchen lässt und mit der „gespenstischen“
und leidenschaftlichen Musik seines
Klavierkonzerts in c-Moll dringt er derart tief in schattenhafte
Nella 38^ Sinfonia, formalmente “all’antica”, omette
per pianoforte e orchestra in do minore, egli penetra così
profondamente nelle regioni d’ombra come in nessun altro
lavoro.
Mozart for connoisseurs
“I cannot write poetically, I am not a poet. I cannot express
my feelings and thoughts through interpretation
and pantomime. But I can through sounds, I am a musician”,
Mozart wrote to his father. The pieces written in
1785 and 1786, which are on the programme this evening,
underline this statement: in his 22nd Piano Concerto,
Mozart goes far beyond the amusement customary at
the time, not only in terms of playing time, and achieves
a depth of expression through the use of tone colours
and new instrumental combination possibilities that
is shocking. In the formally “old-fashioned” 38th Symphony,
he skips the cheerful minuet at the end because
the wistful underlying mood - also in view of the alienation
from the Viennese aristocratic audience - cannot
be shaken away, and with the “ghostly” and passionate
music of his Piano Concerto in C minor, he penetrates as
deeply into shadowy regions as in no other work.

Ein überirdisches Vergnügen
Verspielt, prickelnd, dekadent, mitreißend, übermütig
und berauschend – diese Musik macht süchtig.
Die Brandenburgischen Konzerte sind so gut, dass
sie „als Botschaft der Menschheit an außerirdische
Lebensformen“ mit den Voyager-Raumsonden durchs
Weltall fliegen. Bachs barocke Unterhaltungsmusik,
Brandenburg gewidmet. In seinem Zyklus verbindet
er unterschiedlichste Instrumentengruppen und führt
die polyphone Themenverarbeitung auf einen neuen
Höhepunkt. Allerdings verstaubt die handschriftliche
Partitur 130 Jahre lang in Berliner Bibliotheken, bevor
Ihren Wert
schätzt man – pro Konzert – auf wenige Groschen.
Un piacere soprannaturale
Giocosa, frizzante, decadente, emozionante, esuberante
note siano finalmente disponibili in stampa nel 1851.
Dopo la morte del margravio, i “Six Concerts avec plusieurs
instruments” furono inventariati insieme ad altri
171 autografi musicali del suo patrimonio. Il loro valore
è stimato in pochi centesimi per concerto.
A supernatural pleasure
Playful, sparkling, decadent, thrilling, exuberant and
intoxicating - this music is addictive. The Brandenburg
Concertos are so good that they fly through space with
the Voyager space probes “as a message from humanity
to extraterrestrial life forms”. Bach’s baroque light music,
which develops Vivaldi’s and Corelli’s Concerti with
virtuosity, was written at the Köthen court between 1718
and 1721 and is dedicated to Margrave Christian Ludwig
of Brandenburg. In his cycle, he combines the most
diverse instrumental groups and takes polyphonic thematic
treatment to a new height. However, the handwritten
score collects dust in Berlin libraries for 130 years
before the notes are finally available in print in 1851.
After the margrave’s death, the “Six Concerts avec plusieurs
instruments” were taken an inventory along with
171 other music autographs from his estate. Their value
is estimated at a few pennies per concerto.

I requisiti
Evidentemente,
a volte, si riesce davvero a rendere “tutto possibile”.
Everything is possible
“It must be possible to do everything”: Bach’s guiding motto
can be heard in the self-confident way in which he breaks
down barriers in his six sonatas and parti- tas for solo
violin. The blending of polyphonic and melodious dance
movement and the combination of sonatas and suites
allows him to build a monument of violin literature. Biber’s
Passacaglia from the „Rosary Sonatas“, which ‘walks’
through harmonic highs and lows, is followed by two pieces
from this group of works (“Sei solo a violino senza basso
accompagnato”), dated by Bach in his own fair copy to
“ao 1720”. His wife Maria Barbara died unexpectedly in the
summer of this year: shortly afterwards he composed a
long chaconne with which the Partita no. 2 ends. The technical
requirements of this individual piece exceeded anything
previously pub- lished for solo violin. “The man writes
a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful
feelings onto a system for a small instrument”,commented
Brahms on this puzzling yet stirring music that seems to
consolidate itself into a self-sufficient universe of tones.
Sometimes it is indeed “possible to do everything”.

Fu
compositori come in uno specchio veneziano.

Venice is a stage: “The first music I heard here was in

and a singing voice. They did it so well that they would
have been applauded in any other country in Europe,” the
English musicologist Charles Burney reported from the
lagoon city in 1770. It was in this hotspot of European
musical life that Antonio Vivaldi and Giovanni Battista
Reali presented their Opus No. 1 four years apart: Collections
of 12 trio sonatas each, concluded by a folia. While
Vivaldi became a classical star in the 20th century, Reali’s
life remained mysterious. In 1727, he is mentioned as
Kapellmeister to the Duke of Guastalla in Emilia-Romagna,
where his traces are lost. A young ensemble travels
to the Serenissima to the undulating baroque melodies
and folly of the carnival, merging the early music of the
two composers as if in a Venetian mirror.

Amerika!
America!
musica americana è inconcepibile senza l’influenza
America!
“We recognise that a piece is American as soon as we
hear it,” says British violinist Daniel Hope. “But what is
it that makes music sound American?” In his search for
the typical American sound, Hope explores a folk song
arrangement by Aaron Copland and confronts Broadway
songs by Kurt Weill, who emigrated to the US in 1935,
with his songs for Brecht’s “Threepenny Opera”. And
because US music is inconceivable without the African-American
influence, he supplements this selection
with a jazz standard by Duke Ellington and a work by
the composer Florence Price. The concert then leaves
the “new” world, crosses the Atlantic, and ends in the
“old world” with a contemporary look at Antonio Vivaldi’s
“Four Seasons” by Max Richter, who boldly deletes
three-quarters of all notes from the original score and
combines the Baroque highlight with post-minimalism
in such a virtuoso way that one hears this music “anew”.

The Vienna Berlin Music Club
In ihren brillanten Neufassungen
anderen. Das Septett reagiert auf den Auftrittsort und
wählt Werke, die maßgeschneidert sind. Kurz gesagt:
Unterhaltsamer kann ein Konzert wohl kaum sein.
The Vienna Berlin Music Club
In
musicale e tradizioni e stili altrimenti lontani vengono
accostati. Questo cocktail riserva sempre delle sorprese
e non ci sono due serate uguali. Il settetto sceglie opere
su misura in base al luogo della performance. In breve:
un concerto non potrebbe essere più divertente.
The Vienna Berlin Music Club
Who actually has the most fun here? The top musicians
from the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras,
who offer a colourful repertoire that is unfortunately
never on the concert schedule of their famous orchestras?
Or the audience, who is enthralled by their virtuosity
and passion? One thing is certain: the seven soloists
play what they have always wanted to play. What
they have in common is, of course, the joy of classical
music. But their choice of pieces goes far beyond that.
In their brilliant new versions, they also work on jazz
and Latin, Jewish folk music, Hollywood soundtracks
and pop. In the process, standards are given a new musical
dressing and traditions and styles that otherwise
do not belong together are brought closer together. This
cocktail is always good for surprises and two evenings
are never the same. The septet reacts to the performance
venue and chooses works that are tailor-made.
In short, a concert could hardly be more entertaining.

For You!
For You!
liberazione. “Creare completamente liberamente, come
nel jazz, è proibito nella musica classica. L’artista classico
“Ho imparato a creare
For You!
When Thomas Quasthoff talks about jazz, it sounds like
a liberation. “To create completely freely, as in jazz, is
forbidden in classical music. The classical artist does
sing his own interpretation, but never in a free form, but
at most in the way he thinks is meant artistically,” says
the “man with the most beautiful voice in the world”, who
has a somnambulatory sure sense for the appropriate
stylistics of what he sings. This applies to opera arias, art
and folk songs as well as jazz, pop and soul. He has long
proven that with an enormously versatile bass-baritone
he can also master genres rooted in the African-American
musical tradition. He turned his back on the stage
as a classical singer in 2012 - and has found a way back
there as a jazz and soul interpreter. His instrument today
is the microphone. “I have learned to create new timbres
with it, I can produce a soft ballad sound and with it a
new intimacy is possible for me”.

Junge Wilde
durchschlägt, an Tuberkulose.

all’inizio del 1845, era già arrivato nell’Olimpo dell’establishment
musicale.
finale: “Lode a te, Gesù Cristo”.
Young wilds
A message of love: In 1923, Shostakovich, who was making
a living as a “piano illustrator” in St. Petersburg cinemas,
fell ill with tuberculosis. During a stay at a health
resort at the Black Sea, he met the daughter of the literary
scholar Ivan Glivenko. “Dimitri, like the other boys,
could not resist Tanya’s charm,” says his friend Dimitri
Sollertinsky. Instead of a declaration of love, the 17-yearold
sends music. In the autumn of 1923, he wrote the
one-movement Piano Trio Opus 8, which he dedicated
to the young woman who would later become one of his
most important advisors. In 1795, the 25-year-old Beethoven
entered the stage of the music capital Vienna with
the publication of three piano trios. When Mendelssohn
wrote his C minor trio in early 1845, he had already arrived
on the Olympus of the music establishment. In this
light-hearted springtime, he takes “real pleasure” in music
and perhaps that is why he quotes the melody of a Luther
chorale in the finale: “Praise be to you, Jesu Christ”.

Kunstliedern, in denen wehmütige Abschiede, düstere
Traumszenen und Todesvisionen dominieren. In Mahlers

Was du

Notte e addio
prodigio Erich Wolfgang Korngold emigra negli Stati
Uniti e fa rapidamente carriera nell’industria cinematografica.
In “Was du mir bist”

1994 erschienenen zweiten Streichquartett setzt
die britische Komponistin mit jamaikanischen Wurzeln
Eleanor Alberga einen zeitgenössischen Farbtupfer,
bevor die Matinee mit dem ungezwungen eingängigen
As-Dur-Quartett endet, das Dvorák in New York beginnt
in seinem letzten Kammermusikwerk deutlich hören.

che Dvorák iniziò a New York e concluse in Boemia

“I tell you before God, as an honest man, your son is the
greatest composer I know in person and in name,” Haydn
had told him after a musical soirée in February 1785. This
is what Leopold Mozart reported. The programme of the
house concert also includes the B-flat Major Concerto,
which Wolfgang Amadeus dedicates to his fellow composer
“as the fruit of a long and arduous labour”. With
her second string quartet, published in 1994, the British
composer with Jamaican roots Eleanor Alberga adds a
contemporary splash of colour before the matinee ends
with the unceremoniously catchy A-flat major quartet,
which Dvorák began in New York and finished in Bohemia
in 1895. “The Lord God has granted us this moment and
that is why we all feel so unspeakably happy,” he confesses
after returning from America. This joy of being can be
clearly heard in his last chamber music work. It is good to
be home again.

in Wien Carl Otto Nikolai.

A Weimar combina elementi orchestrali e pianistici
in quadri sonori romantici.

Is someone looking for redemption? In 1861 Franz Liszt
resigned from his post as Kapellmeister in Weimar and
travelled to Rome. There the Pope forbids the divorce
of his partner Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein and thus
allows the wedding with the composer, scheduled for
22th October, to fall through. His son Daniel dies in 1859,
his daughter Blandine in 1862. During this time he transcribes
the “Pilgrims’ Chorus” from Wagner’s opera “Tannhäuser”
and seeks a “blessed” peace in Catholicism. In
Weimar he combines orchestral and pianistic elements to
create a new organ style. For the “Queen of Instruments”,
Liszt transcribes repertoire works by Verdi, Mozart, Bach
or Chopin and expands these models into romantic sound
paintings. The concert ends with the transcription of the
overture “Eine feste Burg ist unser Gott” - a moving musical
trbute to the composer and Kapellmeister of the Court
Opera in Vienna Carl Otto Nikolai, who died in 1849.

SEISMOGRAPH
Abstraktion. Die Farben sind in mehreren
Schichten aufgetragen, komplexe, spannungsreiche
Oberflächen entstehen. Darauf versucht die Musik
mit ihren Mitteln zu reagieren. Man mag in diesen
Bildern alles mögliche sehen: Landschaften, Wolken,
Schnee, Baumrinde, Piktogramme einer fremden
Sprache, Röntgenaufnahmen, Negative von Fotografien,
Gesteinsschichten, Laken, Risse in einer gekalkten
Wand...
Was ist
Musik? Ja, was ist Wirklichkeit?
beiden Musiker übertragen in flächige Klangspuren,
in klingendes Strömen.
"Seismographs are sensitive devices that register the
finest movements of the earth's interior. This is the
claim that this video projection makes in its title: to
bring hidden realities out of the depths, to make the
subterranean audible and visible".

in modale Klangwelten.

In Memoriam Dietrich Oberdörfer
“Dove c’è Dio, c’è l’Anima e dove c’è l’Anima, c’è Dio”, insegna
Meister Eckhart.
trascendenza diventano possibili. Era un grande maestro
d’organo, un compositore ricercato a livello internazionale
e un pedagogo entusiasta. Compagni musicali di ensemble
e progetti come “Katharsis” “OteM” o “unio mystica”
ricordano Dietrich Oberdörfer, morto nel 2021.
In Memoriam Dietrich Oberdörfer
“Where God is, there is the soul and where the soul is,
there is God”, teaches Meister Eckhart. In 2016, the “Laces
born, full-blooded musician from Merano” translated
the precise language of faith of the Dominican monk
and theologian into modal sound worlds. A year earlier,
in Reinhold Messner’s Tibetika collection at Castle Juval,
he had combined occidental spiritual music, psychedelic
guitar sounds and Far Eastern Shinto and Zen mysticism
into a sound that combined a monophonic heritage
with the contemporary. With simplicity and deceleration,
the radical condensation of sound material and stylistic
dissolution, his music creates a mystical-sacred meditation
space in which internalisation and transcendence
become possible. He was a grand master on the organ,
an internationally sought-after composer and an enthusiastic
pedagogue. Musical companions from ensembles
and projects such as “Katharsis” “OteM” or “unio mystica”
remember Dietrich Oberdörfer, who died in 2021.

Stimmen auf Weltreise
Diese Musik ist unsterblich. In „Immortal Bach“ arrangiert
Chrysostomos-Liturgie. Zwischen die geistlichen Chorwerke
schiebt Tobias Chizzali Instrumentalstücke von Vivaldi
und Jean-Baptiste Barrière, dessen virtuoses Spiel
im 18.
corali sacre, Tobias Chizzali intercala brani strumentali
Voices on a world tour
This music is immortal. In “Immortal Bach”, the Norwegian
composer Knut Nystedt arranges the first bars
from Bach’s chorale “Komm, süßer Tod” (Come, sweet
death), does not change a note and yet creates a new
sound with his brief interpretive instructions, which
here is in dialogue with the original score from 1736.
“Christ is the Morning Star”: Christus est Stella”, the
Englishman Will Todd sets to music a short medieval
prayer by the Anglo-Saxon Benedictine monk Beda Venerabilis,
the Norwegian Ola Gjeilo writes a “symphonic”
a cappella miniature with “Serenity”, the Latvian Eriks
Esenvalds lets himself be carried on flights of angels to
paradise and John Tavener processes a solemn hymn
from the Russian Orthodox liturgy of Chrysostom in
“Svyati”. Between the sacred choral works, Tobias Chizzali
intersperses instrumental pieces by Vivaldi and
Jean-Baptiste Barrière, whose virtuoso playing in the
18th century helped the violoncello, which had received
little attention until then, to achieve a breakthrough.

Die Zeit steht still
„Sinfonische Riesenschlangen“ sucht man hier vergebens.
in seinem Werk. Warum? Weshalb? Wohin? Mit
Musik sucht auch Tschaikowsky Antworten. „Folgt man
Tschaikowskys Verleger
lässt das umkämpfte Monopol aufheben – und
macht damit die Verbreitung orthodoxer Kirchenmusik
von „weltlichen“ Komponisten erst möglich.

Il tempo si ferma
Time stands still
Qui non si troveranno “serpenti sinfonici giganti”. Queste
San Pietroburgo è autorizzata a pubblicare musica sacra.
Sigvards Klava
One looks in vain for “giant symphonic snakes” here.
These songs can be 90 seconds short, or only end after
five minutes: Bruckner’s motets are miniature masterpieces
and highlights of his oeuvre. Tchaikovsky also
seeks answers with music. “If one follows the Greek
Catholic service closely and penetrates the meaning of
each ceremony, one is moved to the core,” he tells his
patron Nadeschda von Meck in 1877. A year later, he set
the “Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom” from the Byzantine
rite to music. In 1880, the 15 chants were premiered in
the university church in Kiev. At the same time, a curious
legal dispute takes place: In Russia, only the Imperial
Court Chapel in St. Petersburg is allowed to publish
sacred music. Tchaikovsky’s publisher had the disputed
monopoly lifted - and thus made the dissemination of
Orthodox church music by “secular” composers possible
in the first place.

Gegenwart ihren Platz einnimmt.

The flower of the Italian Madrigal
Renaissance Italy was a melting pot of different traditions
and cultures, with travelling musicians learning
from one another and disseminating this style around
Europe. The word “Madrigal” may come from the word
“matricale” (of the womb), referring to the fact that
they were written in the mother tongue. The program
begins with the early stages of the development of
this form with a frottola by Bartolomeo Tromboncino.
What follows is a journey through the evolution of
the madrigal form in Italy over 100 years, culminating
with Monteverdi, the composer who stitched the
seam between Renaissance and Baroque. Two works
by contemporary composers Judith Weir and Ronald
Corp are included to show a modern reworking of the
historical form, setting texts by Dante and a Sardinian
folk tale.

e all’inno del kyrie eleison.

vorwegnimmt. Was hilft gegen die Blutgierigen?
In praise of peace
In the words of Psalm 59, “Save us from bloodthirsty men”,
which comes at the beginning of this Mass for Peace from
the year 2000, together with a French Renaissance song,
the Islamic call to prayer and the supplication of Kyrie
eleison. The Welsh composer Sir Karl Jenkins combines
elements of the Christian liturgy with a textual collage in
which those who suffer war and blood sacrifices speak
out. God be with us, implored Rudyard Kipling in 1896 in
his “Hymn before Action” and John Dryden, who blew the
call to arms in 1687 and into whose “Song for St. Cecilia’s
day” Jenkins inserts – like a rusty barb – the line from
Horace, “What a blessing it is to die for one’s fatherland”.
Hiroshima eyewitness Toge Sankichi learnt better in 1945:
his poem “Angry Flames” describes the nuclear slaughter
that the Mahabharata, the Indian epic compiled some
2,000 years before, strikingly anticipates as bodies buckle
“like living torches”. What helps against the bloodthirsty
men? It is simple: peace is always the better option.

Eine persönliche Zeitenwende: Am 28. September
1790 stirbt Haydns Arbeitgeber Nikolaus Fürst Esterhazy.
Dessen Nachfolger löst das Hoforchester auf
und entbindet den Kapellmeister von allen Dienstpflichten.
Haydn übersiedelt nach Wien und wird vom
englischen Impresario Peter Salomon für eine Konzertreihe
in London engagiert.
Quartett in e-Moll, Puccinis Chrysanthemen-Elegie
a Vienna e viene ingaggiato dall’impresario inglese
Four-part unity
A personal turning point: On 28th September 1790,
Haydn’s employer Nikolaus Prince Esterhazy dies. His
successor dissolves the court orchestra and relieves
the Kapellmeister of all official duties. Haydn moves to
Vienna and is engaged by the English impresario Peter
Salomon for a concert series in London. He takes the
new D major quartet with the lyrical theme in the first
movement, which will later give this piece its name,
with him on his tour of the island. A young ensemble
undertakes a foray through the quartet literature. Stops
on this journey through the centuries include Schubert’s
“Death and the Maiden”, Mendelssohn’s Quartet
in E minor, Puccini’s Chrysanthemum Elegy and a “Slow
Movement” written by the 22-year-old Webern as a student
of Arnold Schönberg. At the chronological end of
the short trip is Fazil Say with his “Divorce” quartet,
which tells of estrangement, bitter quarrels and final
divorce in the universal language of music.
