nicht das einfachste Opfer sind.
Welche Branchen sind besonders gefährdet oder anfällig?
Kriminelle machen da kaum noch einen Unterschied. Wer
von IT abhängig ist und in der Lage, ein Lösegeld zu bezahlen,
ist ein attraktives Ziel. Und das sind wir schlussendlich
alle. Anders sieht es aus, wenn wir die Geheimdienste dazu
nehmen. Dann sind kritische Infrastrukturen, vom Ener giever
sorger über die Transportunternehmen und Entsorger bis
hin zu Banken noch einmal extra gefährdet, da sie besonders
relevante Ziele sind.
Welche zukünftigen Entwicklungen erwarten Sie im Bereich
der IT- und Informationssicherheit?
Ich befürchte, dass es erst einmal noch schlimmer wird und
hoffe nur, dass es nicht den ganz großen Knall braucht, bevor
es alle verstanden haben. Wichtig wird technologisch außerdem,
ob die Themen »Künstliche Intelligenz« und »Quantencomputer«
besser von den Verteidigern als von den Angreifern
für ihre Zwecke benutzt werden.
Welchen Traum möchten Sie sich erfüllen?
Ehrlich gesagt lebe ich privat und beruflich in meinem
Traum. Ich will nur nicht aufwachen. Aber wenn ich doch
etwas nennen soll: Eine Antarktis-Expedition auf einem CO 2
-
neutralen Schiff. Die Welt entdecken können, ohne an ihrer
Zerstörung mitzuarbeiten. Das würde ich gerne noch erleben.
Was bringt Sie zum Lachen?
Puh, da gibt es viel. Aber bei nichts lache ich so zuverlässig wie
bei Monty Python. Selbst in der hundertsten Wiederholung.
Was ist für Sie Luxus?
Kein Konto zahlt so hohe Zinsen, wie das Konto der eigenen
Erinnerungen. Luxus ist alles, was man hier einzahlen kann. Und
nirgends kann man so viel einzahlen wie auf Reisen. Das habe
ich gerade während Corona bemerkt, wo Reisen ja ein größtenteils
unerreichbarer Luxus war und teilweise auch noch ist.

»feine adressen – finest« spoke with Prof. Timo Kob, Professor of
Business Protection and Cybersecurity at the FH Campus Vienna
and member of the board of HiSolutions AG, about the importance
of securing one’s own IT and why it pays a lot to be a little
better than others.
What business risks arise from a neglected IT landscape? What
are the consequences of an attack?
For a long time, the best protection for IT was quite simply the
lack of motive for an attacker. With the invention of ransomware,
the extortion of companies after their data has been encrypted is a
motive and threat that exists for really every company. And it’s no
longer just about a bump in the profit and loss account, it’s sometimes
about the very existence – of companies that only a day before
considered themselves to be in perfect health. The fact that there is
also the threat of theft of company secrets should also be mentioned,
but in day-to-day life the blackmail cases are most common.
What basic precautions should every company take?
You always hear so much about previously unknown vulnerabilities
that secret services are detecting or that geniuses have
figured out and against which you have no chance. True, they do
exist. But everyday life is the exploitation of long known and
long fixable problems by simple criminals. Make sure you always
have the latest software, do with technology what you need and
not everything that is possible. Allow yourself and everyone else
only what you really need to be able to do (a board member, for
example, does not need to have administrative rights on his PC).
Back up your data as often as you can and back it up outside your
network. Practise how to manage a crisis if that wasn’t enough.
And already you are safer than most. That’s enough in most cases,
because you won’t be the easiest victim.
What future developments do you expect in the field of IT and
information security?
I fear that it will get worse for the time being, and I can only hope
that it won’t take the big bang for everyone to understand. What
will also be important technologically is whether the topics of »artificial
intelligence« and »quantum computers« are better used by the
defenders or by the attackers for their purposes.
