RegenerationofAtatürkOrmanÇiftliği
A specificsiteinthemiddleofAnkara,AtatürkOrmanÇiftliği
(AOÇ),thatwasfoundedbyMustafaKemalAtatürkin1925both
asanexperimentalfarm andasanaforestedrecreationarea
extendsasagreencoridorfrom thecenterofthecitytowards
west.AOÇ thathasbeenunderthepresureofurbandevelopmentstilofersan
invaluable potentialasa naturalcoridor,
agriculturaland recreationalarea in the centeroftoday’s
Ankara.
The aim ofthe projectisto develop an ecologicalurban
regenerationstrategyfocusedontheAOÇ landsinrelationtoits
waterscapewhichisAnkaraStream.

Theactivitesrelatedmorewiththenaturearepositionedonthe
easterndeck,whereastheonesrelatedwithartsandcultureare
positioned on the western deck.On these decks,semi-open
structuresarepositionedthatcanhostflexibleactivities.
Programsthataredesiredtobeaccesedeasily,tobeincluded
andexitedareplacedclosetotheperiphery,andprogramsthat
canatractmorespecificvisitorstothisareaareplacedinthe
center.Teracesand open-airamphithetaresare proposed
alongthestream.Thelandscapecreatedbythetransformation
ofthisregioniscaredforandareaswherethescenerycanbe
watchedarecreated.Thereareisletsonthewetlandforthebirds
thathaveonlyvisualconnectionwiththevisitors.Observation
towersandviewingteracesareproposednearby.
Along the historic Havuzlu yol,thatstartswith Yumurtatepe
tumulusandendswithAtatürksfirstmansion,ahistoricalaxisis
formed.Thewinefactoryisproposedtooperateagainanda
buildingwhichwasleftfrom thezoo,istobetransformedintothe
museum ofcolective memory.Therefore thishistoricalaxis
providesaliteralpathwayforthetangibleandintangiblevalues
ofthesite.
Makinguseoftheexistingfactorybuildingsatthesouthwestof
the site,provide usthe opportunity to transform them into
museums,galeriesandworkshops.Ontheotherhand,underthe
notionofmakingminimalinterventionsontheground,theurban
deckisformedasacontinuouselevatedplatform thatwidensto
hostseveralhumanactivitiesincertainpoints.Firstly,itconstitues

Transformablekiosksaredesignedwhichareexperimentedtohaveseveralcombinationsandconfigurationsthatsuggestdiverse
spaceexperiences.Theycanprovideflexibleandtemporaryfunctionssuchas,informationspaces,second-handbookselers,refreshmentstands,orsouvenirshops.Orasignedfunctionssuchasobservationtowers,servicepoints,cafes,organicproductsales.Theydo
notinteruptthevisualconnectionwiththesurounding.Theyonlyprovideashelterandcanbetransformedaccordingtotheneed.
Alsotheirpermeablitycanbealteredwiththebrise-soleilaccordingtodailyconditions.Thegridalstructurecanbeelongatedinorder
todefineaspaceunderneath,yetintegratedwiththegreen.

AnkaraStream intoawaterfrontparkwithacenterforarchitecturalarchiveandproduction.

Theconceptofsustainabilityisemphasizedundertwonotions.
Ontheurbanlevel,theecologicalcoridoralongthestream continuingintheAtatürkOrmanÇiftliğibringsalofitsgreenanddiffusesitmoreintothecity,asaresponsetoenvironmentalsustainability.Secondly,thehub'sprogram
andspatialorganizationcreatesanatmosphereinwhichpeoplecangathertostudy,discus,andgenerateideasaboutisuesofthebuiltenvironment
aresponsetosocialsustainability.
Inthebuilding,theprogram isdistributedinto3layerswithvarious
acces.Itincludesspacesfortheproductionofideas,spacesfor
exhibition,andspacesfordocumentation.Besidesthecirculationcores,exterieurstaircasesarethemainelementsthatdiversifiestheexperiencesinceitwrapsupthewholebuildingasared
ribbon.Thebuildinghasconnectedfreespacesforprovidingencounterbetweenusers.

Theprojectislocatedinthe13tharondisementinParis.Thesiteis
curentlyatransformationalareaontopofoldrailwaylinesand
thedemandisforresidentialpurposes.Inaccordancewiththe
urbanplanningregulations,acolectivehousingprojectofapproximately40housingunitsisproduced.Whilebeingconfronted
withtheproblemsofinterventionina denseurbanfabric;this
projectisfocusedonthreeaxesofreflection:'Urbanity/Livingin
thecity','Thecolective/Shared'and ‘Housing/Interiority'.
Theefortisfocusedontherelationshipbetweenthestructure
andtheorganizationofspace,thematerialityoftheenvelope
withthe functionitprotects,and the programmed colective
experienceofinhabitants.
The site also includesa promenade onthe souththatpases
throughwhichbecomesapotentialtoolinordertocreatearelationshipbetweenthepubliclifeandthecolectivelifeoftheinhabitants.
Theprojectstartedasgroupsyeteverymemberdesignedtheir
ownbuilding.

TheprojectislocatedinUlusregionwhichisthehistoriccoreof
Ankara.This“layered”townhostsseveralurbanarchelogicalsites
dating backto Roman period,alongside manyarchitectural
worksfrom O tomantoRepublicanera.IntheearlyRepublican
times;thetradecenter,governmentcenterandresidentialarea
functionswereconcentratedinUlussinceitwasalongthespine
andmainaxisofthecity.Despiteitshistoricalvalueanditsplace
ininthecolectivememory,socioculturalchangesandeconomicalchalengesleadtonegativetransformationsinthearea.
Inthefirststep,ascenarioforthefutureoftheheritageinUlusis
proposed.Inordertomakethesiteanatractionpoint,acontinuousfoldingplatform
isdesignedthatpasesthrougheachand
every monument.So thatthe public can participate and
becomeconsicousabouttheculturalandmoralvaluesprocreatedinthearea.
Inthesecondstep,thefocuswasonaveryspecificlocationin
Ulus,whereruinsofO tomaneraresidentialsexist.Takingintoaccountthetotalityoftheregion,anew
program isenvisionedfor
the neighbourhood aftercontextualanalysis.Furthermore,the
buldingsarestructuralyanalysedandarchitecturalsurveysare
conducted.Atthe end the specific building issuggested to
become an open airmuseum where temporary exhibitions
aboutthehistoryofAnkaraandUluscantakeplace.

The building dating back to O toman era which was
devastedbyafireincidentisproposedtobeconsolidated
viainjectionmethodandtofunctionasanopenairmuseum
where temporaryexhibtionscan take place.The building
becomesanartworktobedisplayed.Theregulatorofthis
experience is a red ribbon that wraps up the
sculpture-buildingandservesasacirculatoryelement.

years,havebeenreshapedextensively.OneofthemostprominentplanswasJansenPlanof1928inwhichthearchitectadaptedamodelofgardencityapproach.
TheprojectsiteislocatedinBahçelievlerwhereJansen’sgreen
layoutwasappliedandlaterreshapedthroughtime.Thesiteis
anatractivelivingspotforstudentsasitishighlyaccesiblefrom
universities,besidedtheinhabitantlivinginthedistrictforalong
time.Therefore,thecoexistenceofdiferentuserprofilessustains
anintricatepaternofurbanlife.
Withinthiscontext,theaim oftheprojectistoreinterprettheidea
ofurbanlivingwithinthehistoricalgreenlayout.Thesocialand
culturalcomplexitiesofurbanlifeinthedistrictcreatesanoppurtunitytoscriptahybridscenarioinbothprogram
andtectonics.
Themainideawasdevelopedasagroupofsixandeachstudent
designedtheirownresidentialbuilding.
