Alan Ayckbourn lives up to his reputation as Britain’s foremost writer of farce in this
play, in which Greg Poynter – a young man who has fallen in love with Ginny – decides
to visit her parents in the country to propose marriage. Little does he know that the
unexplained boxes of chocolates, bunches of flowers and unsolicited phone calls which
have been arriving at her flat are being sent by her former lover Philip, the man he
thinks is her father. Drawing on the full array of elements of farce such as double
entendre, mistaken identity and situational misunderstanding, the piece remains as
sparklingly funny as it was when first written over forty years ago, cruising effortlessly
to a happy ending.
New Triad has been touring Europe since 1978, and in this time has presented a
wide range of English classics to audiences for whom English is a second language.
Previous productions at the E.T.A. Hoffmann Theatre in Bamberg include Macbeth
(Shakespeare), Time and Time Again (Alan Ayckbourn), The Importance of Being Earnest
(Bernard Shaw) and the Caretaker (Harold Pinter).
