On Lohri, protesting farmers in Delhi
to burn copies of new agri laws
New Delhi (ATB)- Farmers protesting
at Delhi borders said they would burn copies
of the Centre's new agriculture laws at all demonstration
sites on the festival of Lohri on
Wednesday, as a mark of protest against the
legislations. Lohri is mostly celebrated in north
India, marking the beginning of the spring season.
Bonfires are a special characteristic of
the festival.Farmers' leader Manjeet Singh Rai
said they would celebrate Lohri by burning the
copies of farm laws at all protest sites in the
evening. Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella
body of around 40 protesting farmer unions,
will hold a meeting later in the day to discuss
the next course of action. This comes a day
after the protesting farmer unions asserted that
they would not appear before the Supreme
Court-appointed panel, alleging it was "progovernment",
and said they would not settle
for anything less than the repeal of the three
contentious laws. The unions also
raised doubts over the neutrality of the members
of the committee even as they welcomed
the top court's order to stay the implementation
of the laws. The Supreme Court on Tuesday
stayed the implementation of the controversial
farm laws till further orders and set up the fourmember
committee to resolve the impasse between
the Centre and the farmer unions protesting
at Delhi's borders over the legislations.
Thousands of farmers, mostly from Haryana and
Punjab, have been protesting at several border
points of Delhi since November 28 last year,
demanding a repeal of the three laws and a legal
guarantee to the minimum support price
(MSP) system for their crops.

Editorial
Drama in the US is not over yet
US President Donald Trump might
make some more attempts to subvert democracy
till January 20, when President-elect Joe
Biden takes over
There is a WhatsApp message doing
the rounds: “Americans recently found out that
it’s much easier for them to change presidents
in other countries than in their own nation.” So,
how does the largest democracy, India, compare
with the oldest one, the US, on practising
democracy?
All through the presidential campaign,
outgoing US President Donald Trump had declared
that he would not move out of the White
House even if he were defeated. His rival, President-elect
Joe Biden, retorted that he (Trump)
would be escorted out by the military. But no
one expected an attack on the Capitol Hill, which
is regarded as the temple of democracy in the
US. Trump has spent the last two months refusing
to concede defeat and claiming mass
voter fraud. But the worst was his instigation of
the Capitol Hill riots. According to the US media,
Trump began his most infamous Wednesday
morning making a last-ditch effort to hold
on to power with a tweet, asking his Vice-President
Mike Pence to intervene and overturn Joe
Biden’s election. Pence publicly issued a letter
in the afternoon declaring that he would not illegally
intervene in the Congress, minutes before
convening the joint session of the US Congress
to certify the Electoral College. Trump addressed
his supporters about 1 PM and declared:
“We will never give up, we will never
concede,” and announced “We’re going to the
Capitol.” Trump drove his supporters into a
frenzy. However, he did not join them in the riots
that followed in the Capitol Hill and went
back to the White House and watched the destruction
on television. At the end of Wednesday,
after the US Congress confirmed Biden’s
victory, Trump declared: “Even though I disagree
with the outcome of the election, and the
facts bear me out, nevertheless, there will be
an orderly transition on January 20.”
There are many reasons for Trump’s
atrocious behaviour. First of all, he is a bad loser
and reluctant to admit defeat. Even in 2016,
Trump had declared that he would accept the
poll results only if he won or else he would resort
to legal action. Second, now that he has
lost the presidency, he would lose all federal
protection against prosecution. Third, he needs
his followers to be his support base in case he
makes a presidential bid in 2024. He is also
depending on the 73 million who voted for him
this time. It is speculated that Trump has made
up his mind to contest the next elections and
wants to play the role of a martyr. Fourth, he
also has to keep the section of Republicans who
support him in the party, happy. This contemptible
attack on the US democracy makes one
compare it to the largest democracy, India, that
has gone through many trials and tribulations
in the last 73 years. India has seen a smooth
transfer of power 17 times. The electorate, too,
has become mature over the decades since
Independence and has punished authoritarian
rulers. Even late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi
who imposed an Emergency in 1975 worked
within the system, which bears little direct parallels
to the current situation in the US.

blessed with a baby girl.
"We are thrilled to share with you that
we have been blessed with a baby girl this afternoon.
We thank you all for your love, prayers

start this new chapter of our lives. We hope
that you can respect our privacy at this time,"
he added. In August last year, the couple had
shared the news that they were expecting a

both of them had written: "And then, we
were three! Arriving Jan 2021."
Anushka and Kohli had tied the knot in
December 2017 in Tuscany, Italy.
Kohli returned home from Australia after
taking part in three ODIs, three T20Is and

"Meet the Mman Bbehind Vii Media", Bhalinder Singh Virmani
This is a story of a youth named
Bhalinder Singh Virmani who has come of age,
beginning his career as a news anchor. Like other
children, as a child, Bhalinder would dream about
an accomplished life, totally oblivious to the electronic
media industry, or what it holds for him in
future. Despite belonging to a family that mostly
has medical professionals, he chose journalism
for his career. He knewthat this journey will not
be easy, let alone earninga recognition in this
field. Mediais an industry with no scope of even
a minor error, especially when you are doinglive
shows or news telecasts. But this could not deter
him from forging ahead on this challenging
road.
Starting his career in the year 2000 with
Punjab Today, a Punjabi news channel in India,
you have seen this face representing various
other leading news channels of India, including
Zee Punjabi and PTC News. He is best recognized
for his appealing dressing sense, and relaxed,
easy-going, yet succinct and comprehensive
narrative style. Besidesprimetime news
programmesprograms, Bhalinder has conducted
exclusive interviews and debates on the topics
related to the Punjabi community, both nationally
and internationally, featuring the who's who
of the community. His exclusive documentary on
the history of Sikh Gurudwaras in Pakistan was
hugelyappreciated and still remembered.
During his stint at PTC News, he was
posted in the USA for 2 years as the Executive
Producer for North America Affairs. This afforded
him the opportunity to lead the special PTC coverage
of PM Modi's high-level visit to the countryin
2014. In fact, Bhalinder was the only Sikh Journalist
present at the White House onthis grand
occasion. Among his innumerable
reportingsreporting's, is thewell-coordinated coverage
for state and central election updates for
India,as well asfor USA and Canada. In fact,
recognisingrecognizing his factual knowledge
about Canada Elections 2019, Bhalinder was
invited by BBC to appear as a Special
ReporterSenior Journalist in a related
programmeprogram.
Twenty years into this industry, there
has been no stopping this young achiever. No
surprises then, Bhalinder Singh Virmani has now
launched his own channel named Vii Media
(Virmani Infotainment Media) which is a multifocus
and multi-lingual channel covering a range
of facets, right from current affairs, culture, sports
to religious and corporate progammesprograms.
On the New Year's Eve of 2021, the Channel
organized a mega eventtitled 'Vii Media Virtual
Summit', which was a big hit. The event featured
notable speakers, entrepreneurs and professionals
from across India, USA, Canada, UK and
Australia who talked about various topics of significance,
including ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic,
women empowerment, role of media in today's
times, importance of giving back to the society,
Youth stories many more. This Summit brought
a range of experts under one umbrellato share
experiences related to their professional lives,
as well as talk about the current and strategic
affairs, which can act as a source of learning or
inspiration for the viewers.
After the grand success of this Summit,
the Channel is now coming up with another mega
endeavor, Vii Media NRI's Conclave, scheduled
to be held on 24th Jan 2021. It will offer an interactive
platform to the NRIs to express their views
on various matters concerning India's growth and
create awareness about the same among the
masses. With this objective, the upcoming NRI
conclave will have deliberations on NRIs' views
on India, challenges they face abroad, key learnings,
cultural and religious bindings, immigration
process and policies, theirlegal implications, sharing
of best practices as an NRI, technological
interventions, especially in the agricultural sector,
and various other relevant topics.According
to Bhalinder Singh, Vii Media is not aiming to
enter into any competitive race amongmedia or
social media channels. Rather, it is a platform to
showcaseprogrammesprograms with relevant
content and freedom of expression to enrich
viewers, both with knowledge and entertainment.
With his vast experience and exposure to the
Media sector, Bhalinder Singh is ought to achieve
success in this wonderful initiative, which is already
being noted well, especially by the Punjabi
community.
