ANSTURM AUF DEN
THEODULGLETSCHER
Das Coronavirus hat die Sommer-Pläne der internationalen
Ski-Alpin-Elite durcheinandergewirbelt.
Zermatt Bergbahnen | Zermatt Magazin

Das bunte Weltcup-Feld ist in den vergangenen,
«normalen» Sommern etwa nach
Argentinien, Chile oder Neuseeland geflogen,
um sich auf die Rennen im Winter
vorzubereiten. Zermatt und Saas-Fee waren
jeweils die heimischen Test-Destinationen,
aber noch nie war der Andrang so
gross wie im Corona-Sommer 2020. Österreich,
Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien,
Schweden, Russland, Kroatien, Kanada,
die USA und natürlich die Schweiz trainierten
mit ihren Teams im Juli intensiv
auf den sehr gefragten Pisten. Bis auf die
Norweger waren alle Top-Nationen vertreten.
Mathias Imoberdorf, Sprecher der Zermatt
Bergbahnen AG: «Wir konnten in
diesem Sommer nicht alle Reservationen
annehmen und mussten leider vereinzelt
Absagen erteilen.»
Fahrer angewiesen, in sämtlichen Bahnund
Innenanlagen bis auf die Skilifte
Schutzmasken zu tragen. Auf den insgesamt
13 Rennkursen beim Theodulgletscher
durften sich pro Piste maximal 16
Athletinnen oder Athleten und Betreuer
aufhalten. Die Teams mussten dabei in
Fünfer-Gruppen aufgeteilt werden und
wo immer möglich waren zwei Meter
Abstand Pflicht.
Der Deal: Ihr in Zermatt,
wir dafür in Cortina
Der Trainings-Qualität tat dies aber keinen
Abbruch. Schweizer Athletinnen
und Athleten rund um Marco Odermatt,
Justin Murisier, Lara Gut-Behrami oder
Corinne Suter waren hochzufrieden mit
den Bedingungen und sehen sich bereit
für eine ausserordentliche Wintersaison.
Frauen-Cheftrainer Beat Tschuor meinte
vor dem Saisonstart: «Die Verhältnisse
waren top und wir haben das Maximum
herausgeholt. Die Intensität der Trainings
hat während der Pandemie nicht gelitten.»
Insgesamt trainieren pro Sommer rund
40 Schweizer Kaderathleten in Zermatt.
Wendy Holdener etwa absolviert vor einem
Saisonstart jeweils gut 60 Trainingstage
auf dem Gletscher. Sie meint: «Wegen
der Höhe sind die Trainings viel anstrengender
und man kann niemals gleich viele
Läufe pro Tag durchziehen wie in tieferen
Lagen.»
Swiss-Ski geniesst beim Sommertraining

Didier Plaschy,
Ex-Rennfahrer, Ski-Valais-Co-Direktor und
Ski-Experte beim Schweizer Fernsehen, kritisiert
hin oder her.
Giulio-Schwegler: «Die meisten Rennfahrer bleiben

THRONGING TO THE
THEODUL GLACIER
The corona virus has thrown any summer plans made by
the international alpine skiing elite out of the window.
It was not possible to travel to the southern hemisphere,
which is why the Theodul glacier near the Klein Matterhorn
has become even more popular than during previous
years. Let’s take a look back.
The vibrant World Cup field has flown to Argentina,
Chile or New Zealand over the past, “normal”
summers to prepare the races of the winter season.
Zermatt and Saas Fee were both of the domestic
test destinations, however, never before has the rush
been as great as during the Corona virus during the
summer of 2020. Austria, Germany, France, Italy,
Sweden, Russia, Croatia, Canada, the USA and of
course Switzerland trained intensively with their
teams on the very popular slopes during July. All of
the top-ranked nations were represented, with the
exception of the Norwegians.
Mathias Imoberdorf, the spokesperson for Zermatt
Bergbahnen AG says: "We were unable to accept all
of the reservations this summer and unfortunately
had to send out a number of cancellations.” There
was not a single day on which not every slope at
Klein Matterhorn was occupied from the beginning
of July through to the middle of September,
apart from when hampered by the weather.
Preparation during the summer was characterised
by major uncertainty, as nobody knew exactly what
the calendar would look like and whether any races
would take place at all. It is now clear that the races
will take place, and the start has been given with
strict protection regulations at the respective World
Cup venues.
In Zermatt, the skiers were requested to wear protective
masks in all railway and indoor facilities
with the exception of ski lifts. A maximum of 16
athletes and supervisors were allowed to remain on
a total of 13 racing courses on the Theodul Glacier.
The teams had to be divided into groups of five and
had to remain two metres apart whenever possible.
The deal: You are in Zermatt, we are in Cortina
This, however, did not affect the quality of the
training. The Swiss skiers including Marco Odermatt,
Justin Murisier, Lara Gut-Behrami and
Corinne Suter were extremely satisfied with the
conditions and are now ready for an extraordinary
winter season. Before the start of the season, women’s
head coach Beat Tschour said: “The conditions
were superb, and we made the most of them.
The training intensity levels did not suffer during
the pandemic.” A total of 40 Swiss athletes train in
Zermatt every summer.
Wendy Holdener, for example, would undergo a
solid 60 days of training on the glacier prior to the
start of the season. She says: “Training sessions are
much more strenuous because of the altitude and
you can never do the same number of runs per day
than at a lower altitude.”
The Swiss Ski Federation does enjoy home advantage
during summer training. The Swiss Federation
can reserve the number of training days and slopes.
Only then are other nations allowed to divide the
remaining snow areas between themselves. This advantage
is not only associated with pure patriotism,
but also with funding from the federal government
as part of the national sports facility initiative (NA-
SAK) offered to the mountain cableway operators.
Zermatt Bergbahnen | Zermatt Magazin
13
This means that the slopes in Zermatt remain exclusively
available to the Swiss team for a period of
six out of eight weeks.
The right to host other teams is often linked in exchange
for something in return. The Swiss Ski Federation
has negotiated a training agreement with
the Italian federation for the upcoming season on
the World Cup slopes in Cortina, a trick with regards
to the battles to win titles which is not entirely
insignificant. Walter Reusser, Alpine Director of
the Swiss Ski Federation says: “We see these agreements
as a sound cooperation and not as a deal.”
Is this the end of “school trips”?
The increased concentration levels of summer
preparation on the domestic glaciers has been
caused by the corona virus. But could this development
be sustainable? Will the Swiss Ski Federation
forego any questionable trips to the other side of
the globe in the future? Didier Plaschy, a former
skier, Ski Valais-Co. Director and skiing pundit
on Swiss television has been critical of the lengthy
weeks of preparation in terms of costs and for environmental
reasons. He says: “These trips feel like
school trips to me and I think they’re plain daft.
True to the motto: Other countries travel there,
then we have to go as well, otherwise it will be said
afterwards that we have not done everything we can
to achieve success.”
It will be exciting to see how the Swiss ski federation
will make plans next summer, regardless of
whether the corona virus is still around or not. One
thing is for certain: The significance of the glaciers
in Zermatt, as well as those at Saas Fee, will certainly
not diminish for the ski circus during the
summer. Prices will increase due to these being
something of a monopoly. The daily hire charge
for a downhill slope is currently 1,390 Swiss francs
for 16 people. Each additional person costs 85
francs up to a maximum of 25 people. The daily
hire charge is 1,040 Swiss francs for the super giant
slalom slopes, and it costs 950 Swiss francs for the
slalom and giant slalom courses.
The “Furri” meeting point restaurant
Further down in the area, Josef Schwegler and his
daughter Christine Giulio-Schwegler have been
welcoming the best skiers following glacier training
in their restaurant close to Furri above Zermatt
since 1982. Beat Feuz & Co. appreciate the simple,
straightforward manner of the hosts along with
their simple and delicious food. Giulio-Schwegler:
“Most skiers stay with us for a maximum of 40
minutes because they still need enough time in the
hotel afterwards to recharge their batteries between
morning ski training and evening fitness drills.”
The dynamic that arises when the YO teams all of a
sudden start eating next to the ski stars on their terrace
is exciting. “That is the greatest thing for any
young talent. Everyone is an equal to us, regardless
of whether it’s a World Cup or a Youth Cup.”
David Taugwalder
Zermatt Bergbahnen | Zermatt Magazin
15
Marco Odermatt, Justin Murisier, Lara Gut-

Juli 1871
die erste Frau auf dem 4478m hohen Gipfel.
Exakt 2198 Tage lagen dazwischen.
Erstbesteigung wieder ans «Horu» gewagt hatte.
Juno Tabei, vergingen ganze 22 Jahre.
Erster Damenversuch 1867
Nachdem
genoss deren volles Vertrauen.

Konkurrentin Margaret Claudia Brevoort (1825 –
1876), Meta genannt.
Was für Lucy Walker
Melchior Anderegg war, war für Meta Brevoort
Christian Almer.
machten. In Windeseile stellten sie eine Seilschaft
zusammen und zogen Richtung Hörnligrat. Bei
idealen Bedingungen gelang die Besteigung ohne
nennenswerte Zwischenfälle. Ob die erste Frau
schliesslich am 21. oder 22. Juli 1871 auf dem
Matterhorn-Gipfel stand, ist nicht restlos geklärt. In den
meisten Quellen wird der 22. Juli genannt. An diesem Tag
jedenfalls erreichte eine Depesche aus Zermatt verschiedene
Zeitungsredaktionen in aller Welt, um den alpinistischen
Grosserfolg zu verkünden. Lucy Walker selber hielt
Zwanzig Jahre unternahmen
sie grosse Bergfahrten. Zwischen 1859 und 1879
kamen 98 Gebirgs- und Gletschertouren zusammen. Mit einer
einzigen Ausnahme war immer Anderegg Lucy Walkers
Begleiter. Zwischen den beiden war eine tiefe Freundschaft
entstanden.
So
besuchte Anderegg Lucy Walker, die letztmals 1901 in die
Schweiz reiste, verschiedentlich in ihren Ferien in Mürren.

Lucy Walker’s triumph in the long-distance race against Meta Brevoort
“THE FIRST WOMAN
TO CLIMB THE
MATTERHORN”
The race to scale the Matterhorn was in the hands of the
British Alpine Club some 150 years ago. Six years after
the first ascent in 1865 by Edward Whymper from London,
on 22 July 1871, Lucy Walker from Liverpool was the first
woman to reach the 4478-metre-high summit.
There were exactly 2198 days between them.
During this time, only 17 other all-male rope teams
reached the summit of the Matterhorn, among
them was the mountain guide Peter Perren from
the village of Zermatt. He was the first one who
had ventured back to “Horu”, as the Matterhorn
it is known by locals, after the devastating accident
on the first expedition. Four of the seven first
mountaineers plunged to their deaths during the
descent which was the first dramatic mountaineering
tragedy in the Alps.
By way of comparison to Mount Everest, the
highest mountain in the world (8848 metres), it
is worth mentioning: between the first ascent by
Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on 29 May
1953 and the ascent by the first woman, Japanese
native Junko Tabei, a whole 22 years had passed.
This just serves to highlight the outstanding
achievement of Lucy Walker (1836 – 1916). While
the women on Mount Everest had long been equal
climbing partners in the 1870s, for her first ascent
Lucy Walker had to consider the morals of society
at the time. For a long while, a lady in trousers was
simply unimaginable and this meant the female pioneers
had to scale the mountain in a hoop skirt.
Breaking all the rules, they boldly shed their skirts
as soon as the climb began. Under the flannel
tucked in their backpacks they concealed a pair of
athletic bloomers.
First female attempt in 1867
In September 1867, at just 18 years old, Félicité
Carrel from Valtournenche in Italy was the first
woman ever to attempt the Matterhorn. She did
not know about the British bloomers yet. With the
support of a group of mountain guides, she dared
to attempt the ascent from the resort of Cervinia.
After Jean-Antoine Carrel narrowly lost the race
for the first ascent against Edward Whymper two
years earlier, the locals to the south of the Matterhorn,
or “Cervino” in their own tongue, fancied
the trophy of the first woman for themselves at the
very least. One hundred metres from the summit,
Félicité Carrel had to give up. Blustery winds ballooned
the brave young woman’s wide hoop skirt
and threatened to drag her to her peril. In her
honour, the point where she turned back was later
named “Col Félicité”.
Impressive track record
35-year-old Lucy Walker was accompanied by
Frank, her father and Frederick Gardiner when
she successfully reached the summit. She was
fearless, resilient, persevering and technically
adept – something she had proved on countless
arduous trips in the years before. She was the
first woman to reach the peaks of the Lyskamm
and Piz Bernina, and she even achieved the accolade
of the first ever ascent of the Balmhorn.
Summer 2019, unveiling of the new bronze plaque for Lucy Walker in the Zermatter Walk of Climb.
The Bernese Oberland mountaineering legend
Melchior Anderegg (1828 – 1914) was a constant
companion on her expeditions and he often travelled
with the Walker family for weeks on end,
commanding their complete trust. Coming from
a wealthy merchant family in Liverpool, alongside
father and daughter, Lucy’s brother Horace had
also been seized by the climbing obsession. With
their accomplishments, the Walkers were among
the defining figures in mountaineering in the second
half of the 19th century. As well as evading
the dress code of the times, Walker carved out her
own path in the face of many other reservations
and prejudices. Because the high-class British Alpine
Club was exclusively reserved for male members,
she became involved in the founding of the
“Ladies’ Alpine Club” for which she also served
as President.
Melchior Anderegg – the key to success
Alongside the two Walkers and Frederick Gardiner,
the triumphant rope team included five mountain
guides. Naturally the “expedition leader” was
Melchior Anderegg, the Walkers' confidant. The
“gentleman and pioneer” from Meiringen, as Natascha
Knecht describes him in his biography, was
one of the best of his time. As an Alpine ibex hunter,
he first discovered climbing in the Grimsel region
and swiftly developed the passion from there.
He soon conquered the most challenging routes
and achieved numerous first ascents which did not
go unnoticed by the adventure-hungry Brits. The
ambitious Englishmen saw Anderegg as their key to
success in conquering the Alpine peaks.
This ultimately led Lucy Walker to her victory atop
the Matterhorn against her major rival Marguerite
Claudia Brevoort (1825 – 1876), who was referred
to as Meta. From a leak in 46-year-old Meta’s
camp, Anderegg had learned that she intended to
attempt the Matterhorn and was already on her
way to Zermatt. The American woman was in excellent
form in 1871 and on the mountaineering
scene she had been given the confidence to climb
the Matterhorn. Living in England, she had spent
the whole summer in the Alps. To demonstrate her
achievements, Brevoort already had Mont Blanc
under her belt and was the first woman to summit
the Grandes Jorasses, the Dent Blanche, the Weisshorn
and the Bietschhorn. She also managed the
first winter ascent of the Wetterhorn and the Jungfrau.
Meta Brevoort’s Melchior Anderegg came in
the shape of Christian Almer. She had this mountain
guide to thank for most of her successes; he
was also one of the leading trailblazers in mountaineering
at the time.
The competitor trailed behind
The Walkers had just returned with Anderegg from
a failed ascent of the Weisshorn as word spread
of Brevoort's plans in Zermatt. They sprang into
action to put together a rope team and set off in
the direction of the Hörnligrat route. With ideal
conditions, the ascent was smooth and uneventful.
To this day it is not entirely clear whether the first
woman finally reached the Matterhorn summit on
21 or 22 July 1871. Most sources state 22 July as
the actual date. In any case, on that day a telegram
from Zermatt reached various editorial offices all
24 Anniversary | Zermatt Magazin
over the world to announce the great mountaineering milestone
in Alpine history. Lucy Walker herself regarded 21 July
as the summit day.
One thing was for sure, Meta Brevoort was too late. She
arrived in Zermatt the day after the Walker’s triumph... and
is said to have commented on her shock that the summit
trophy had been snatched from under her nose. The two
greatest female mountaineers of their time met in Zermatt
for the first and only time in person. The runner-up showed
her strength of character by congratulating her rival. Her
own response came a few days later, with the first crossing
of the “Mountain of Mountains” from Zermatt to Cervinia.
On the south side, she had already become more closely acquainted
with the Matterhorn for the first time in July 1869.
With her guides, she had climbed up over the Italian ridge
to the Balma della Cravatta, a hut at 4130 metres. Nothing
seemed to stand in the way of her success any longer. Due
to bad weather, however, the venture had to be cut short
and the rope team returned to Cervinia without achieving
their goal.
The story told on screen
Lucy Walker was celebrated in the international media for
her first ascent of the Matterhorn and there were even poems
dedicated to the “Climbing Girl”. The story was retold
on screen by the BBC in 1986, with English actor Jenny
Seagrove playing Lucy Walker. The role of Melchior Anderegg
was played by Swiss actor Oliver Tobias.
The relationship between the British lady and the mountain
guide from the Bernese Oberland remained steadfast.
For twenty years, they both undertook major climbing trips
and between 1859 and 1879 they put together 98 mountain
and glacier expeditions. With only one exception, Anderegg
was always Lucy Walker’s climbing companion. A profound
friendship had developed between the two and some sources
claim that Lucy Walker had fallen in love with the handsome
Anderegg. But she always respected that her mountain
guide was married – and remained single herself. The deeper
relationship remained a mystery. What is certain is that
the two continued to keep each other company when the
days of scaling the highest peaks were over. Anderegg visited
Lucy Walker, who travelled to Switzerland for the last time
in 1901, on several occasions during her holidays in Mürren.
The two of them could also be seen on trips together in
Zermatt. When asked what he was doing there, Anderegg
reportedly said to the English mountaineer William Martin
Conway: “I am gradually getting too old for such strenuous
mountain climbs. That's why my next mission is searching
for flowers with the ladies...”.

guide zermattois Peter Perren.
Melchior Anderegg (1828-1914) l’a toujours accompagnée.

Anderegg a toujours accompagné

liegt in deren Natur.

THE BATTLE
OF THE QUEENS
AT THE MATTERHORN
This summer it’s all about the title of “Reine du Cervin”,
for which around 100 hefty Eringer cows will battle it out
at the foot of the Matterhorn. The audience can look
forward to hearty duels, which will be held in the Matterhorn
Arena, on the far side of the village of Zermatt.
Eringer cows are a mountain breed that has always been reared in Valais, and the mostly
black, imposingly horned cows have a natural fighting instinct. They cross horns to determine
a pecking order in the herd among themselves, and it is in their nature to keep clashing,
sometimes violently. A great spectacle and a packed audience are guaranteed when
the proud “Queens” come to duel in celebration of the well-known regional cow battles in
the arenas of Upper and Lower Valais.
A festival rich in folklore
On Sunday, the 8th August 2021, in celebration of the summer cow battle, the rowdy horn
bearers will, for the second time since 2018, cause a stir and perform powerful battles in
front of the impressive backdrop of the Matterhorn, while the Eringer breeders cheer on
their combating protégées from behind the surrounding barricades.
Two years ago, the traditional tourist and folkloric event in Matterhorn village attracted
around 4,500 Swiss, as well as international visitors, and, should the weather be on our
side, the organisers also expect a similar attendance in 2021. During the “Stechfest”, visitors
and spectators can enjoy an attractive supporting programme with live music and an
extensive catering range offering specialities of Valais all around the natural arena.
Programme and guidelines
The animals will be divided into the three categories of cattle, first milking and cows in accordance
with their age. A contest counts as lost if an animal refuses to take part or turns
its back on its opponent. Animals that lose three contests in the arena will be eliminated
and led from the ring by their owners. The seven remaining animals at the end of each
round qualify for the final round. The cow that prevails in the final against all opponents
will be classified as the winner and elected “Reine du Cervin” (Queen of the Matterhorn).
The Eringer Cattle Breeding Association “Inner Nikolaital” bears patronage of the tournament.
The deciding contests in the various categories begin on Sunday morning at
09:30. Finally, from 3:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, the animals will make their way to the
final rounds in the arena. The proceeds from the Summer Cow Battle benefit the Alpine
Cooperatives of Zermatt for the sustainable maintenance of the infrastructure.

Qu’elles s’entrechoquent parfois violemment

Mittendrin
im Geschehen ist Benny – das Kutschross. Eine Geschichte
über Freundschaft, Abenteuerlust und Nostalgie.
Benny steht bedächtig auf dem Zermatter
Bahnhofplatz. Der polnische
Kaltblütler ist ein Kutschross und
befördert Gäste und Pakete durch
Zermatt. Das Pferdegespann mit Kutsche
wird von Tereza Irankova geführt.
Benny und Tereza verbindet eine lange
Freundschaft. «Das Ross hat einen sehr
ruhigen Charakter», sagt die gebürtige
Tschechin, die schon als junge Frau
oft und gerne mit Pferden gearbeitet
hat und in Engelberg eine Ausbildung
zur Kutscherin absolvierte. «Ich bin
sehr temperamentvoll und impulsiv»,
sagt Tereza Irankova über sich selbst.
«Demgegenüber ist Benny sehr ruhig
und ausgeglichen im Charakter. Darum
ergänzen wir uns so gut.»
Kutschenfahrt als Erlebnis
Ein Kutschentaxi ist nicht neu in Zermatt.
Gerade im 19. Jahrhundert und
in der Blüte des englischen Tourismus
in den Schweizer Alpen war die Kutsche
aus der Zermatter Kulisse nicht
wegzudenken. Bisher wurden Personentransporte
mit der Kutsche nur von
zwei Hotels für die hauseigenen Gäste
angeboten. Mit Benny fährt nun wieder
eine Personenkutsche durchs Dorf.
Das freut nicht nur die Gäste, sondern
auch die hiesige Bevölkerung. Hinter
der Idee des Pferdetaxis steht Cargo
Alpin in Zermatt und das Logistikunternehmen
Planzer. Damit bringen
sie Pferd und Sonntagskutsche zurück
ins Ortsbild von Zermatt. Seit einigen
Monaten fahren Benny und Tereza
im Auftrag von Alpin Cargo in der
verkehrsfreien Bahnhofstrasse Pakete
aus und transportieren Gäste ans Ziel.
Die Kutschenfahrt startet jeweils an
der Bahnhofstrasse und endet überall
dort, wo sich der Einspänner hindernisfrei
lenken lässt. Wer sich von Benny
durch Zermatt kutschieren lassen
möchte, kann auf dem Bahnhofplatz
Ausschau nach der Kutsche halten und
sie spontan buchen oder eine Anfrage
an benny@alpincargo.ch senden. Auch
für Anlässe wie Hochzeiten oder Jubiläumsfahrten
kann man Benny mieten.
Benny als Shooting-Star
Seit dem vergangenen September ist
Benny auch auf verschiedenen sozialen
Kanälen anzutreffen. So sind auf der
Internetplattform derbenny.ch verschiedene
Kurzfilme von und mit Benny zu
sehen. Der neue Shooting-Star von
Zermatt bringt rund 800 Kilogramm
mit nur einer PS auf den Boden. Die
Episoden im klassischen Serienstyle
zeigen die Tätigkeiten, Freundschaften
und Abenteuer von Benny, dem
Kutsch ross. Mittlerweile wurden schon
fünf Teile gedreht. Dabei geht es unter
anderem um Bennys Erlebnisse mit
zwei Fahrgästen, um die «Güütscha»
(die Kutsche) und um die Lizenz zum
Vorfahren. Benny wird nämlich offiziell
als Taxifahrer im Verkehr geführt. Trotz
Fahrverbot in Zermatt. Und trotz
Corona.

A HORSE TO LOVE
Driving horse carriages through Zermatt looks back on a long
tradition. In the middle of it all, is Benny – the carriage horse.
A story about friendship, adventure and nostalgia.
Benny is standing carefully in Zermatter’s Bahnhofplatz.
The Polish cold-blooder is a carriage-horse and transports
visitors and packages through the streets of Zermatt. The
horse and cart are led by Tereza Irankova. Benny and Tereza
are bound by a long friendship. “The horse has a very
relaxed nature”, says the Czech-born, who already worked
with horses – well and often – as a young woman and trained
as a carriage driver in Engelberg. “I am very temperamental
and impulsive”, says Tereza Irankova about herself. “In contrast,
Benny is calm and balanced in character, which is why
we complement each other so nicely.”
The Carriage Experience
A horse-carriage taxi is nothing new in Zermatt. During the
19th Century and the height of English tourism in the Swiss
Alps, carriages were an integral part of everyday life in Zermatt.
Up to now, carriages transporting people were only
offered by two hotels for their own guests. Because of Benny,
a people-bearing carriage can now make its way through the
village again – not only to the delight of the visitors, but also
local population. Credit of the idea of a horse taxi goes to
Cargo Alpin in Zermatt and the logistics company Planzer.
In this way, they have brought horse and Sunday carriage
back to the Zermatt scenery. Benny and Tereza have been
delivering packages and visitors to their destinations along
the pedestrian Bahnhofstrasse, under contract by Alpin Cargo.
The carriage route begins at Bahnhofstrasse and ends
wherever the one-horse carriage can be steered without hindrance.
Anyone who would like to be carted through Zermatt
by Benny, can look out for the carriage at the Bahnhofplatz
and book it spontaneously or send a request to:
benny@alpincargo.ch. One can also book Benny for festive
events, such as weddings or anniversaries.
Benny, a rising star
Since last September, you can also find Benny on various
social media channels. The website derbenny.ch shows
various short films made about and with Benny. The new
shooting star of Zermatt shows up with a grand total of 800
kilos ans only one horsepower. The films shown in a classical
series-style reveal many of the duties, friendships and adventures
Benny, the carriage horse, has had. Five episodes have
already been created that include Benny’s experiences with
two passengers, the ‘Güütscha’ (carriage) and the permit to
drive up somewhere. For, Benny is officially entered as a taxi
driver in traffic on the road. Despite a general driving ban in
Zermatt… and Corona.

die Füsse nehmen will.

The Matterhorn Trek
A FIVE-DAY HIKING
ADVENTURE ON
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL
MOUNTAIN IN THE
WORLD
The Matterhorn Trek offers seasoned hikers a unique mountain
experience at the foot of the Zermatt landmark, where there are
quaint mountain huts, historic sites and fascinating people to be
discovered.
You will need a little stamina if you want to complete
the entire five-day Matterhorn Trek all at once. After
all, altitudes of more than 4000 metres and a total
route length of 46,7 kilometres await hikers. It will
take experienced adventurers about 20 hours to accomplish
the entire trek.
Spectacular mountain scenery
Your efforts will not be in vain, on the Matterhorn
Trek there are countless, breath-taking things to
discover – miniature to colossal, and everything in
between. Miniature in the delicate form of rare alpine
flowers, and large in the looming shape of the
Matterhorn’s mighty north face. On the first day the
route heads directly from the village northwards –
Zermatt's “good side”. There are no cable cars going
up the mountains here, so you will only meet serious
climbers who want to explore the mountain landscape
by foot. Away from the throngs of tourists you
will spend the night at the unspoilt, romantic Trift
mountain lodge. The second day takes hikers to the
Schönbiel hut where you will have an unforgettable
view of one of the most famous and most notorious
north faces of the Alps. The elemental force of the
Matterhorn can be witnessed again and again as the
thunder of falling blocks of ice and rock resounds
through the valley.
The Hörnli and Gandegg mountain huts
On the third day, a visit to the world-famous Hörnli
hut awaits adventurers. From the Schönbiel hut, a
trek along the foot of the Matterhorn leads you to the
world-renowned mountaineering spot. Hut warden
Martin Lehner will certainly have a few anecdotes in
store for any hikers who come to visit. On the fourth
day, you will pass Hirli and follow the Glacier Trail
past the lake of the Theodul Glacier and Trockener
Steg all the way to the Gandegg hut. After four days
of intensive hiking explorers are now perfectly acclimatised
and can really enjoy the overnight stay in the
historic Gandegg hut, which was built in 1885. On
the last day of the trek only the “mere” descent to
Zermatt remains, providing unforgettable views of
the Matterhorn. If your knees are beginning to ache,
you can also make the descent to Zermatt in comfort
and style in one of the famous mountain cable cars.

Le trek du Cervin
PLUSIEURS JOURS
D’AVENTURE
On y jouit

Zermatt grosse Verdienste erworben.

Augenblick zerstörten, was sie in Jahren errichtet
hatten. Was blieb da ausser ein wenig Musse zum
Musizieren und zum Holzschnitzen übrig! Daher
ähnlich -– in ihrer rigiden Lebensform. Städel,
Speicher und altertümliche landwirtschaftliche
Gerätschaft stellen also hiesige Kulturdenkmäler
dar, die es wie die Renaissance-Paläste in unserm
südlichen Nachbarland zu schützen gilt.
Im Wissen, dass Bewahren Vertrautheit voraussetzt,
liegt Viks eigentliche Passion in der Hinwendung
zur heimischen Geschichte, die, obwohl die Flüchtigkeit
der Zeit manches fortzuschwemmen droht,
allmählich wiederum Beachtung findet. Er hat sich
eine umfangreiche Bücherei und eine Sammlung
alter Fotos und Postkarten von Zermatt zugelegt
und seine Kenntnisse in Gesprächen mit älteren
traditionsverbundenen Schäfern und Jägern vertieft.
Dank diesem Steckenpferd und seinem Flair
als Fotograf wurde er schon verschiedentlich zum
Illustrieren von Büchern über Zermatt wie z. B.
«Mythos Matterhorn» und «Hotels erzählen» beigezogen.
Wandern und Entdecken
Als Mitglied der Zermatter Kulturkommission initiierte
Vik mit Rene Biner, Klaus Julen, Othmar
Perren und anderen die Interessengemeinschaft
«Wandern und Entdecken», die kürzlich im Verein
«Altes Zermatt» mündete. Dieser stellte sich die
Aufgabe, auf bisher kaum beachtete Kulturschätze
hinzuweisen. Als Erstes gestaltete der Verein den
«Kulturweg» nach Zmutt, der im Südwesten von
Zermatt an lauschigen Plätzen und am ältesten
Stadel Europas vorbei zu diesem mittelalterlichen
Weiler führt. Unterwegs veranschaulicht er in vierzehn
beschilderten Stationen 800 Jahre Zermatter
Landwirtschaft.

THE AUTHENTIC
ZERMATTER,
VIKTOR PERREN
Vik, so his name to set him apart from his father, is a full-blown
jack of all trades! As strange as it sounds, the 46-year old
mountain railway worker is often known as the ‘last real
Zermatter’.
While this does not make a lot of sense in terms of
his origin, as his mother, whom he lost at two years
of age, originated from Biel/Bienne. Whereby, his
father and highly charismatic grandfather greatly
contributed to the development of the ski scene in
Zermatt. No, the wicked innuendo arises from his
unwavering dedication to past customs and practices
that he still acknowledges all around – be it in
old stables, machines or documents.
The highly diverse Vik
It would be far easier to begin with what Vik has not
done, rather than diving into the sheer multiverse
of professional and personal duties he undertook.
The trained chef can, at any time, also be called in
as a well-endowed ski slope, avalanche and rescue
expert, Chief Rescue Representative of Rothorn
and also as an avalanche dog leader.
Vik is a highly talented handyman and has a strong
feel for aesthetics. He renovates old stables threatening
to collapse and turns them into weekend
lodges, magically transforms age-old roots and
strange driftwood into veritable works of art and
adorns wooden planks with finishing rosettes. For
a while, he tried his luck as a breeder of the rare
Valaisan sheep, but then gave that up to cultivate a
rye field in Zmutt.
It may appear strange that during such a fleeting
time, Vik not only proves how the traditional
and modern are compatible, but that the old even
breathes new life into the new. For, as Zen reveals,
the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ is not merely about
outer form, but inner poise. The former passionate
huntsman does not shy from expressing his traditional
roots in public. He assists in gamekeeping,
is a member of the National Costumes Association
and as community sergeant, swings the village flags
at festive events.
Vik taught himself to play the Swiss accordion
(Schwyzerörgeli) and founded a country music band,
in which he plays the lead, just as a Hungarian Primate
(Magyar ‘Primas’). His traditional music awakens
desires in many, so that he is now often invited to
play with his ensemble – be it at Riffelberg or Sunnegga.
And yet, Vik still finds time to host saga evenings
every now and then, together with Klaus Julen.

Culture as a way of life
Vik is very aware of how hard it used to be for culture –
thus the form of expression that surpasses the merely useful
as a luxury– to thrive in mountain regions. The lifeforce of
our forefathers was so exhausted through their sheer fight
for survival and against the wearying forces of nature that
could wreak distruction in a single moment, on what took
years to build. So, the only thing remaining in the form of
leisure, was a little time for playing music and carving wood!
The culture of the mountains – as mirrored in its barren,
rocky landscape – is concealed in the most rigid form of
life. Stables, reservoirs and archaic agricultural equipment
stand out as local cultural relics that must be protected, just
as the Renaissance palaces of our neighbouring country to
the south.
Knowing that preservation is only possible through trust,
Vik’s main passion lies in studying the local history of the
area that, even when the fleeting times threatens to steal
much away, is gradually finding acknowledgment again.
He has built up an extensive library and collection of old
photographs and postcards of Zermatt and stocked up on
his skills through conversations with older tradition-bound
shepherds and hunters. Thanks to this hobbyhorse and
charm as a photographer, he was also called to illustrate various
books on Zermatt, such as ‘Mythos Matterhorn’ and
‘Hotels erzählen’.
Discovery and hiking
As a member of the Zermatter Cultural Commission, Vik
founded the community group ‘Hiking and Discovering’,
together with Rene Biner, Klaus Julen, Othmar Perren and
others, which was recently transformed into the association
‘Old Zermatt’. The association set itself the goal of calling
attention to cultural treasures that were hardly known up to
now. First, it formed the ‘Cultural Path’ to Zmutt that south
of Zermatt, leads past secluded spots and the oldest barn in
Europe, to this quaint medieval hamlet. En route, fourteen
signposted points highlight 800 years of Zermatt agriculture.
Following this initial success, ‘Old Zermatt’ hopes to
focus on the old village center and other small hamlets surrounding
Zermatt, such as Blatten and Findeln.
Thanks to these idealistic endeavors, the veil has begun to
lift and shed first glimpses of light on the ancient heritage of
our forefathers.

VIKTOR PERREN,
UN ZERMATTOIS
PURE SOUCHE
Non, si l’on affirme malicieusement

Status quo zufrieden geben will. Eine Zusammenarbeit mit
ausgewählten Partnern sei in Zukunft durchaus erwünscht.
So
Tonus.

“A BEER FROM
ZERMATT –
A SUCCESSFUL
ENDEAVOUR”
Local Products | Zermatt Magazin

Zermatt, a place renowned for skiing and hiking. Plus, the
Matterhorn and marmots, comfort and cuisine. But also:
beer. Founded in the mid-2010s, the Zermatt Matterhorn
Brewery has to prove its ability to compete with the sector’s
major players every single day. We arrange a visit.
The young team meets us in the brewery’s very own
bar ‘Zermatt beer experience’, just a three-minute walk
from the train station. This is a relatively new meeting
place, recently created after the Zermatt Matterhorn
Brewery purchased the tasting and event room on the
ground floor. This previously housed another company
and the brewery had to make do with the basement level,
where visibility is somewhat different.
This situation has now changed: the new tasting room
welcomes locals and tourists. It can be used for both
private events and brewery tours, with the chance to
try the company’s amber nectar. But the bar should not
be confused with a restaurant, as Swabian brewmaster
David Maier adds with a twinkle in his eye: “You can’t
sate you hunger here – but you can quench your thirst”.
A great description of that feeling you get when you
know you won’t go thirsty... The new location is the ideal
place for both raising a birthday toast with friends
and for company excursions.
Untreated beer, brewed from Zermatt
mountain water
In 2019, the brewery produced 1,100 hectolitres of
beer, primarily of two types: ‘Matterhorn Special’ and
‘Monte Rosa Lager’. The former is an earthy special
beer with notes of honey and roasted aromas; the latter
is a light lager with character, “rather hoppy, with floral
and herbal flavours”, states David Maier, describing
the product of his work as only a true brewmaster can.
Care has been taken with both beers to ensure that they
are untreated, i.e. naturally cloudy and unpasteurised.
These core lines are joined by a light special beer in
summer and a slightly stronger one in winter; the brewer
reveals that he will be making a dark bock beer with a
ruby-like colour for the winter season 2020/21.
Meanwhile, a third bottle is also unveiled, labelled
‘Zermatt Limo’. This brand-new product is also malt
based but contains no alcohol and very little sugar. “In
producing the non-alcoholic beer, we want to establish
a second pillar for our business. The beer sector is a
fiercely competitive market”, he states. Industry leaders
assert high levels of pressure and the only way to
stand out from Feldschlösschen, Heineken and co. is
through quality and products packed with character.
However, the team believes that this is precisely why
a Zermatt beer makes complete sense. “Our product
bears the name of a renowned destination, the label
pictures a world-famous mountain and the water used
to make the beer comes from the mountain landscape
and springs around Zermatt and is of excellent quality.”
These attributes combined with the master brewer’s expertise
and a careful selection of raw materials should
ensure the top quality of the beer.
Regional expansion
This focus on quality also explains why Zermatt beer
has so far primarily been served in the Matterhorn village
itself. If the product were to be offered nationwide,
others would have to be trusted with some of the quality
controls. “However, it is important for us to know that
our beer is properly transported, stored and served.”
This naturally does not mean that the brewery is happy
to settle for the current status quo. It very much wants
to work with select partners in the future. However,
the brewery attaches great importance to regionality
and, in line with its philosophy, initially wants to focus
on increasing its sales in the nearby Matter Valley: in
the first step down to Eyholz, where Zermatt beer can
already be found on shelves. Following the expansion
to include the tasting and event room, it is therefore
the matter of logistics that primarily subjects the entire
team – the brewery employs fewer than three full-time
equivalent staff – to new challenges. For example, as
a car-free village, transport out of Zermatt is an immediate
hurdle... but not an insurmountable one, of
course: Zermatt is simply predestined to have its own
beer. “The endeavour can and will succeed” is the firm
consensus.

insurmontable. Zermatt est véritablement prédestiné à avoir
sa propre bière. «Cela peut marcher, cela va marcher!» Tel
est l’esprit.

Mario Noti – Präsident Hotelier Verein Zermatt
«ES WIRD ZERMATT
NICHT GERECHT, WENN
MAN UNS NUR AUFS
‹HORU› REDUZIERT»
Personal. Zermatt geniesst hier einen
hervorragenden Ruf, obwohl gerade auch
im Tourismus überall ein Fachkräftemangel
herrscht. Was ist das Geheimnis?
Hierbei spielen sicher die Familienbetriebe in Zermatt,
die diese Kultur stark pflegen, eine wichtige
Rolle. Zermatt bietet Arbeitskräften mit seiner
einzigartigen Natur und den attraktiven Arbeitgeber
aber auch einiges. Trotzdem ist es ebenso für
uns zunehmend eine Herausforderung, Top-Leute
anzulocken. Ein entscheidendes Thema dabei: die
aktuelle Wohnsituation im Dorf. Es gibt zu wenig
bezahlbare Unterkünfte.
Sie haben die Familienbetriebe angesprochen.
Welche Rolle spielen diese in Zermatt?
Die Zermatter Familienbetriebe sind das Rückgrat,
die DNA der Destination und als solche
praktisch komplett in Zermatter Händen. Das ist
meiner Meinung nach ein elementarer Faktor für
unser Qualitätsbewusstsein und trägt entscheidend
zur hohen Gästezufriedenheit bei. Auf den Online-Portalen
sind wir die am höchsten bewertete
Destination im gesamten Alpenraum.
Der Hotelier Verein Zermatt hat neu einen
Geschäftsführer angestellt. Wieso diese
Neustrukturierung? Worin besteht dessen
Aufgabe?
Die Herausforderungen in unserer Branche wachsen.
Dem wollen wir nun mit einer Professionalisierung
Rechnung tragen.
Personal einstellen.
Was sind die grossen Herausforderungen,
mit denen Mitglieder des Hotelier Verein
in der Gegenwart konfrontiert sind?
Neben den bereits angesprochenen Themen wie
die wachsenden Ansprüche, die Schwierigkeiten
bei der Rekrutierung von Fachkräften sind die
wachsenden airbnb-Angebote ein grosses Thema.
Dadurch gehen zusätzliche Wohnungen für Mitarbeiter
verloren. Das muss man angehen. Nicht,
indem man in die Eigentumsrechte der Wohnungsbesitzer
eingreift. Die fehlenden Regeln für airbnb
sorgen aber für eine gewisse Willkür. Es müssen
alle Beherbergungsformen die gleichen Rahmenbedingungen
haben, was Bereiche wie den Brandschutz
oder den Gesamtarbeitsvertrag der Branche
anbelangt. Dann käme es zu einer natürlichen Bereinigung.

Ein weiteres, grosses Thema sind jeweils die
Online-Buchungsplattformen wie booking.com,
die mit hohen Gebühren viel Wertschöpfung
abziehen.
Magnet. Gross gemacht hat die Destination aber
das starke unternehmerische Engagement im Ort
und der Wille, sich stetig zu verbessern. Wir leben
hier den Tourismus.
Das ganze Wallis/Oberwallis versucht ebenfalls
von der Strahlkraft des Matterhorns zu
profitieren. So versuchen diverse Destinationen
unter dem Label Matterhorn Region Gäste aus
Fernmärkten anzulocken. Sieht man darin mehr
Vorteile als Nachteile?
Wir sehen dort nur Vorteile. Man darf da nicht
kleinkariert denken.

Businesses in the Zermatt Hoteliers Association
coordinate their common interests. On the other
hand, just how important is professional competition?
Healthy competition is certainly important and ensures
that the hotels are in peak condition, which
benefits the visitors.
Businesses, which drive each other to new peak
performances: Is that a particular strength of
Zermatt?
Yes, absolutely. Everyone in the village knows that
we live by tourism and that we must offer our visitors
a first-rate product. Innovation and willingness
to invest are huge. But it’s also necessary if we don’t
want to lose touch. The aim must be to act and not
react. Here in Zermatt, we find ourselves in this
happy, but hard-earned starting position.
To what extent have visitors’ expectations
changed in recent years?
Their demands have certainly not decreased. On
the contrary. That’s why it will be even more important
in the future to create offers tailored to our
visitors. The quality of service is and remains a deciding
factor. We’ve certainly made a great leap forward
over the last twenty years. A lot of things are
obvious. All the more reason for us to keep finding
new things and achieving the extraordinary.
Zermatt is also well known for hosting many
world-famous stars, politicians and other
celebrities. How important is it for hotels to encourage
their employees to be discreet so that
visitors feel their interests are protected?
This awareness is very important. Zermatt has a
sporty image rather than a high society one. Our
visitors aren’t looking for publicity, but for the
down-to-earthiness and discretion that Zermatt offers
them. Every employee and stakeholder knows
this and it has developed as a matter of course over
the years. So we don’t need to promote this particularly.
To ensure a high standard of service, hotels
need good staff. Zermatt enjoys an excellent
reputation in this respect, although there’s a
shortage of skilled workers everywhere,
especially in tourism. What’s the secret?
Family businesses in Zermatt certainly play an
important role in this and care strongly about
this culture. Zermatt has a lot to offer employees
with its unique nature and attractive employers.
Nevertheless, attracting the best people is also increasingly
a challenge for us. One of the key issues
here is the current housing situation in the village.
There’s not enough affordable accommodation.
You mentioned family businesses.
What role do these play in Zermatt?
Family businesses in Zermatt are the backbone, the
DNA of the resort, and as such it is almost completely
in their hands. In my opinion, this is a basic
factor in our quality awareness and contributes decisively
to high visitor satisfaction. We are the highest-rated
resort in the entire Alpine region on the
online portals.
The Zermatt Hoteliers Association has
appointed a new President. Why this
restructuring? What is his role?
There are growing challenges in our industry. We
want to sort these out professionally. Firstly, it creates
added value for our association members. The
President looks after the representation of interests
and lobbies for the Zermatt hotel industry. Regionally,
cantonally and also nationally. He develops the
communication strategy and draws up a concept
for building strategic partnerships with added value
for members. As a medium-term goal, we need to
consider in which additional areas we need further
skills and, if all goes to plan, recruit more staff.
What are the biggest challenges facing
members of the Hoteliers Association today?
In addition to the issues already mentioned, such as
growing demands and difficulty in recruiting skilled
workers, the increase in Airbnbs is a major issue.
This means that additional housing for employees
will be lost. This needs to be tackled. But not by
encroaching on the property rights of homeowners.
However the lack of rules for Airbnbs creates
a certain inconsistency. All forms of accommodation
must have the same framework conditions with
regard to areas such as fire safety and contracts of
employment. Then this matter would resolve itself
naturally.
Another major topic is the online booking
platforms, such as booking.com, which deduct
a lot of added value with their high fees.
Are they more of a curse than a blessing?
I don’t see that as so much of a problem. Platforms
such as booking.com also give us a reach that would
otherwise never be possible. It is up to each individual
business not to become too dependent on the

portals. To do this, you have to make sure that direct
sales are and remain relevant. But the resort doesn’t
remain inactive: The Zermatt digitisation strategy is
intended to create a marketplace where visitors can
book all the offers available for the resort.
A provocative question: What would Zermatt’s
international resort be like without its
Matterhorn?
It doesn’t do justice to Zermatt if we’re accused of
only being where we are today thanks to the Matterhorn.
Of course the “Horu” (local name of the Matterhorn)
is an important attraction. What’s made
the resort great, however, is the strong commitment
to the place by businesses and the will to constantly
improve. We live here by tourism.
The whole of the Valais/Upper Valais is also
trying to benefit from the charisma of the
Matterhorn. Various resorts under the label
of the Matterhorn region try to attract visitors
from distant markets. So do you see more
advantages than disadvantages?
We only see advantages. You mustn’t think us petty-minded.
The Matterhorn has a charisma for the
whole country. It’s one of Switzerland’s greatest
symbols. And in the end, Zermatt also profits from
such campaigns.
Where will Zermatt be after Covid-19?
I’m convinced that we’ll emerge stronger from this
situation. Many businesses have experienced a great
summer. The whole resort has continued to work
together. It can’t be taken for granted that key service
providers will pursue a common strategy to
move the whole place forward. If we can continue
to join forces, Zermatt will also be successful in the
future. Especially if we manage to avoid a coronavirus
hotspot in the coming winter. Then we can also
expect good business over the winter.

cet aspect, y contribuent largement.
On y trouve trop

saison estivale.

organisiert?
Wir sind eine Genossenschaft mit 257 Genossenschafterinnen
und Genossenschaftern, in der Regel
sind das patentierte Skilehrer, diplomierte Bergführer,
diplomierte Bikeguides, diplomierte Wanderguides
usw. Mit diesen arbeiten wir auf Vermittlungsbasis
zusammen.
In
einem normalen Winter haben wir zusätzlich 140
Hilfsskilehrer unter Vertrag. Dieses Jahr werden es
aufgrund von Corona sicher weniger sein.
Wie viele Angestellte arbeiten in der
Administration?
Was mich an Zermatt ebenfalls fasziniert,

viel politische Arbeit leisten. Wir haben
die Stadt sowie alle Kantone rund herum
vermarktet. Da fehlte mir manchmal
die Nähe zum Produkt und den
Leistungsträgern. Das ist in meiner
aktuellen Aufgabe bei den ZERMAT-
TERS völlig anders. Zudem war in
Luzern nicht allen die Bedeutung des
Tourismus für die Stadt und Region
bewusst. Das ist in Zermatt ganz anders.
Hier weiss man natürlich, dass
der Tourismus die Einnahmequelle
Nummer 1 ist. Diese Tatsache hat mich
letztlich neben der Faszination für das
ganze Thema auch dazu bewogen, den
Job als Geschäftsführer der ZERMAT-
TERS anzunehmen.
Welche der angebotenen Sportarten
ist im Moment am meisten im Trend?
Der ganze Bergsportbereich im Winter
wie im Sommer ist sehr populär. Beim
Bergsteigen sehe ich einige Trends, der
ganze Ausbildungsbereich wird wichtiger,
ebenso das Sportklettern, nicht
zuletzt deswegen, weil Sportklettern
bei den nächsten Olympischen Spielen
erstmals olympische Disziplin sein
wird. Ein weiterer Trend zeichnet sich
im Winter ab: alle Freizeitaktivitäten
ausserhalb der Pisten werden stärker
nachgefragt werden. Diese Entwicklung
wird diesen Winter durch Corona
nochmals beschleunigt. Die Leute
haben Sehnsucht nach freier, intakter
und unberührter Natur. Skifahren
bleibt im Winter aber natürlich Thema
Nummer eins. Im Sommer sehen wir
zudem Potenzial beim Bike- und Trailrunning.
Welchen Stellenwert hat das
Matterhorn bei der Vermarktung
von Outdoor-Erlebnissen?
Einen grossen für die ganze Destination.
Ein Symbol, das man auf der ganzen
Welt kennt, und ganz schnell mit
Zermatt in Verbindung bringt. Für uns
ist das Matterhorn der Türöffner in die
ganze Welt der Aktivitäten.
Als Geschäftsführer der
ZERMATTERS vermarkten Sie auch
das weltberühmte Matterhorn?
Ja, natürlich nutzen wir auch dessen
Strahlkraft. Und ich bin begeistert, ein
Teil dieser ganzen Geschichte rund
ums Matterhorn zu sein. Dass wir es
Leuten aus aller Welt ermöglichen
können, auf das Matterhorn hochzusteigen,
geführt von einheimischen, lokalen
Bergführern, die wir vermitteln.
Das macht natürlich viel Freude und
auch etwas stolz.
Haben Sie das Matterhorn
schon mal bestiegen?
Ja, einmal. Mit dem einheimischen
Bergführer Denis Gruber, jetziger Präsident
des Bergführervereins Zermatt,
hatte ich das Privileg, morgens als einer
der Ersten den Berg hochzusteigen.
Das war ein Erlebnis, welches ich nie
mehr vergessen werde. Aber natürlich
habe ich mich körperlich gut vorbereitet,
bin viele Treppen hoch- und hinuntergelaufen.
Hart war es trotzdem,
bei der Besteigung des Matterhorns
Your adventure is our mission!
Be a part of Zermatters.
So
Allerdings muss man Mountainbike
ein wenig segmentieren. Wir stellen aktuell einen
Riesenzuwachs bei den E-Bikes fest. Ich denke, dort liegt für
Zermatt eine sehr grosse Chance drin. Denn rein vom Biken
Ohne Corona hatte man
tagelang über etwas diskutiert. Die Bereitschaft, gewisse
Dinge zu verändern, ist wesentlich gestiegen.

THE ZERMATTER
As soon as you meet the 47 year old CEO of ZERMATTERS, the immediate
impression is of a man who is passionate about his job. Although he rarely sees
his wife and children during the week, because they live in Lucerne, the Wälti
family meet up at the weekend in Zermatt, where others go on holiday.
Beat Wälti, how are the ZERMATTERS organised?
We are a cooperative with 257 members, including, as a general
rule, qualified ski instructors, not to mention, qualified
mountain, biking and hiking guides and so on. We work together
on an agency basis. That means we look for a suitable
guide for our customers and allocate the job. The majority of
our members are with us during summer or winter, and, in a
normal winter, we will also have 140 assistant ski instructors
under contract. Of course, there have been fewer this year,
due to corona.
How many employees work in administration?
There are four in summer, six in winter.
In 2019 you relocated from Lucerne Tourism and Lake
Lucerne to Zermatt and the Matterhorn. Which region is
better to market?
Although Central Switzerland, with the city of Lucerne,
has plenty to offer, the high mountain ranges have always
fascinated me. At Zermatt, my current workplace, I’ve also
succumbed to the magic of the Matterhorn, which is iconic,
but when I take a look around the region surrounding Zermatt,
for example, the Schönbielhütte or the Gornergrat,
the overall package totally enchants me. There are so many
beautiful, magical spots, and what impresses me equally as
much, is the high level of quality with which tourism is managed
here.

winter: all leisure activities away from
the slopes are in greater demand. Because
of corona, this development will
gain speed again this winter, as people
have a craving for outdoor, unspoilt
and pristine nature. Naturally, skiing
will always be number one in winter,
but we also see potential for bike and
trail-running in summer.
How important is the Matterhorn
in the marketing of outdoor
experiences?
Immensely so for the destination as a
whole, it is a symbol that is known all
over the world and very much associated
with Zermatt. To us, the Matterhorn
is the key to a whole world of activities.
In what way does the marketing of
Lucerne differ from that of Zermatt?
In Lucerne, I had to carry out a lot of
political work. We marketed the city,
as well as all the surrounding cantons,
so I sometimes lacked proximity
to the product and service providers.
My current role at ZERMATTERS is
completely different, and, besides, not
everyone in Lucerne was aware of the
significance of tourism for the city and
the region. It’s very different in Zermatt,
because here you know that tourism
is the number 1 source of revenue.
Ultimately, it was this fact, together
with the fascination for the whole concept
that convinced me to take on the
role as CEO of ZERMATTERS.
Which of all the sports on offer is
currently most on trend?
The whole field of mountaineering is
extremely popular, in winter and summer
alike. I see certain trends in mountain
climbing; the whole training sector
is becoming more important, likewise
sport climbing, not least because it is
set to be an Olympic discipline for the
first time at the next Olympic Games.
There is a further trend emerging in
As CEO of ZERMATTERS, do you
also market the world-famous
Matterhorn?
Yes, of course, we also make use of its
appeal, and I am thrilled to be part
of the whole history surrounding the
Matterhorn. It makes me, not only very
happy, but also rather proud that we
can make it possible for people from
all over the world to climb the Matterhorn,
guided by locally-based, native
mountain guides whom we arrange.
Have you ever climbed
the Matterhorn?
Yes, once. I had the privilege of being
one of the first to climb the mountain
in the morning, with the local guide,
Denis Gruber, the current President of
the Zermatt Mountain Guide Association
(Bergführerverein Zermatt). That
was an experience I’ll never forget. Obviously,
I was well-prepared physically,
by running up and down a lot of stairs,
but it was still tough climbing the Matterhorn
as the air becomes rather thin
for everyone, at some point. My younger
daughter made the climb a year later,
so we were able to look back on the
whole experience together.
As a destination, Zermatt relies heavily
on mountain biking. Is that the
right direction to take?
I feel that mountain biking is a trend
that should be taken seriously, although
it should, to a certain extent, be segmented.
We are currently experiencing
a significant increase in electric bikes,
and I believe that presents a great opportunity
for Zermatt, and because, for
biking alone, and in comparison to other
destinations with steep trails, Zermatt
is a really challenging destination.
They say that the local ZERMATTERS
have a special character. How is your
relationship with the locals?
Good. I take people seriously and listen
to them, and expect the same from
them in return.
You have been at ZERMATTERS for
just over a year now. How would you
summarise your first year?
I knew from the outset that ZERMAT-
TERS was a young organisation, so
viewed it rather like a tourism start-up,
in which two traditional organisations
have been brought together, and I
knew there was still a lot more in store
for me. However, I would never have
anticipated that I could have written
a book about my activities after a year
and two months…
Prior to corona Zermatt experienced
a boom in Asian visitors. From where
are you missing these visitors?
The day tourists not so much, it is, for
example, the climbers from Japan and
Wein ist keine Frage der Entfernung

Korea, and for them the greatest thing is to stand atop the Matterhorn
at least once in their lives. Of course, we are also missing the
American visitor who is important to Zermatt all year round. The
Asian visitor, on the other hand, is very young and not necessarily
looking for the outdoor experience, as far as activities are concerned,
though ZERMATTERS has not yet had the right products on offer
for this visitor segment.”
Since March 2020, we have been suffering under corona.
How has it impacted on the (business) activities of ZERMATTERS?
It has been more demanding, but viewed positively, it has become
more varied. We have lost part of our budgeted revenue and, following
the closure of the mountain railways, 140 employed ski instructors
no longer had any assignments; likewise, the 250 cooperative
members offering winter activities fell into a vacuum and
solutions had to be found in every nook and cranny for all these
matters of concern. We had sponsors who dissolved their contracts
with ZERMATTERS and it was an intense period as CEO.
Corona did, however, have a positive aspect: it accelerated processes
when something was in need of reformation. Prior to corona,
we would spend all day long discussing matters, whereas now,
the readiness to modify certain things has increased significantly.

covid, ils seront certainement moins nombreux.
prestataires me manquait parfois.

sehr gut an.»
so Hasler.

THE FINAL PIECE
OF THE PUZZLE
The new 3S cableway between the Klein Matterhorn and
Testa Grigia will open in the summer of 2022. The vision of
a continuous cable car connection between Switzerland
and Italy will therefore become a reality. "AlpineX" should be
about more than merely crossing the Alps.
The “Matterhorn glacier ride II”. This is the name of the
new 3S cableway which will circulate between the Klein
Matterhorn and Testa Grigia from the summer of 2022. You
will need to exert some patience prior to the opening. The
major project however is already casting its shadow. Because:
The continuous cable car connection between Zermatt and
Cervinia, also known as the “AlpineX”, will become a reality
once the “Matterhorn glacier ride II” opens. “The highest
crossing of the Alps by cable car will be a service which is
geared primarily towards day-trippers and is intended to
boost business during the summer,” says Markus Hasler,
the CEO of Zermatt Bergbahnen. Just to remind you: The
“Matterhorn glacier ride II” upper station on the Klein
Matterhorn travels directly alongside the identical 3S cable
car, which opened in 2018 and which connects the 3,883
meter high summit with the Trockener Steg.
The “AlpineX” is primarily intended to appeal to visitors
from long-distance markets. And they shouldn't only have to
enjoy the spectacular ride over the high alpine world. They
can also benefit from stopovers. For example, on the Klein
Matterhorn, with its viewing platform and the Glacier palace.

Cable car manufacturer: Leitner ropeways
Or on the Testa Grigia, where the slopes are open
365 days a year. New productions are planned on
both peaks up until the opening. Hasler adds: “The
new 3S cableway is the final missing link in a supply
chain which makes the high-alpine, cross-border
adventure world around the Klein Matterhorn
both a unique and a high-quality product.”
It is difficult to believe that international customers
view the “AlpineX” merely as a quick journey
across the Alps and that Zermatt should be left
empty-handed. People are much more convinced
that added value is being created for the entire destination.
The experience is more important than speed
“It is unrealistic for the cable car connection to be
deployed as a rapid transit,” says Hasler. This is
because you would drive under the massif via the
Gotthard or Simplon tunnels if you wanted to get
beyond the Alps as quickly as possible. “In contrast
to these travel routes, the route via the Aosta Valley,
the Klein Matterhorn and the Mattertal is more
geared towards slow-moving tourists who wish to
see and enjoy the area.” The train journey is itself
an experience thanks to the offers on the peaks.
And Hasler continues: “The route via the Aosta
Valley takes a relatively long time for a European
traveller who ends up in Milan and wants to go to
Paris. An overnight stay in Cervinia or Zermatt is
therefore a really good idea.” Or even for several
nights, “because there is plenty to experience in the
area surrounding the Matterhorn.”
Quality not quantity
But is there a risk that the “Alpine Crossing” will
become a boomerang? Key phrase: Mass tourism?
The Bergbahnen CEO Hasler does not share these
concerns. And he gives his reasons why: “The AlpineX
will be a high-quality product within the
high-price range.” The strategic orientation is clearly
geared towards quality and not quantity tourism
whether it be in terms of price or the makeup of
the offers. This not only applies to the AlpineX, but
also to the entire Zermatt-Matterhorn destination”
says Hasler. There is no danger of it becoming
overwhelmed by mass tourism.
The fact is: Zermatt will soon have another attraction
with the “AlpineX”. A generational project
will become a reality. And Zermatt will be able to
showcase itself even more prominently in the international
shop window.

Gornergrat Bahn
DAS MATTERHORN IN ALLEN
DIMENSIONEN ERLEBEN
seinen derart besonderen Glanz verleiht.
drei Seiten her.
Gornergrat Kulm.

DISCOVER THE MATTERHORN
IN ALL ITS GLORY
A multimedia discovery world is being created on the Gornergrat,
showcasing the Matterhorn and 28 other surrounding 4k
mountains. Visiting the Gornergrat will become an even more
special experience in a multidimensional way.
By next summer, visitors will be able to dive deep into the
different dimensions in a naturalistic staging. At the discovery
world, they will be able to approach the mountain of
mountains that lends Zermatt and its surrounding region
a special quality, in three zoom levels. At level 1, a guest
can choose between two virtual gliding tours: a relaxed panoramic
flight (augmented reality) or the rich experience of a
more active flight, where they can take the (steering-) ropes
in their own hands (virtual reality). With a constant view of
the Matterhorn, the observer glides through dizzying heights
using 3D-glasses, whilst sitting on hand glider-like seats.
At the second level, the visitors are immersed in various
sceneries highlighting the four seasons. One can look over
icy snow-capped landscapes, gale-like snow storms passing
by, spring meadows awakening in full bloom before
the viewer’s eyes – accompanied by lighting projected from
three sides. Thanks to the true-to-detail reproduction of the
Matterhorn, visitors can perceive the virtual surroundings
in an all-too realistic manner. At the third, the view of the
observer is directed across the real Matterhorn and its Alpine
mountain peaks. The unique beauty can be admired
up-close through periscopes. Graphic anchor points provide
additional information on each given theme.
The multimedia production offers exciting information on
flora and fauna, significant and historical events, as well as
the history of the Gornergrat railway. The exhibit shows
great promise in becoming a fascinating supplementary experience
to one’s visit to the Gornergrat. As of next spring, it
will offer a brand-new perspective on the highly impressive
mountain world that can be experienced right up close. The
exhibition has been in progress since early 2020, namely at
the former cable car station ‘Hohtälli’, right beside Gornergrat
Kulm.

Kulm.
