lem de Kooning, Jim Dine, Jane Freilicher, Alex

Katz, R. B. Kitaj and Larry Rivers. With a recording

of Ashbery reading his poem. Prints and record

housed in a stainless steel Hollywood movie canister

with a convex mirror on the lid. San Francisco:

Arion Press, 1984. € 12500,–

Designed as a tribute to Ashbery, his poem is accompanied

by signed prints from his artist-friends, united

within a circular format. The prints are in various

media, including lithography, etching, and woodcut.

The text is printed in handset type radiating from a circular

hub like spokes in a wheel. Along with the record

of Ashbery reading the poem, there is a new foreword

to the poem written by the poet. The foreword is signed

by Ashbery and each original print bears the particular

artist’s signature. Fine copy. Limited to 150 copies

Now very scarce.

No. 173.

Prangenberg, Norbert. Peer Gynt. Illustrated with

35 etchings and monotype. Folio, bound in cloth

covered boards in the orginal cloth covered slipcase.

San Francisco: Limestone Press, 1990. € 8500,–

The German artist, Norbert Prangenberg, who was primarily

known as a sculptor, was also a prolific graphic

artist, and the 35 etchings and monotype he contributed

to this edition of Peer Gynt helped to create a magnificent

book. The book was printed by Jill Livermore,

Richard Urban, Mike Shea, and Karen Tossavainen on

Rives 270 gm paper, and bound by Klaus Rötzscher and

Hank Hine. There are nineteen examples, numbered

and signed by the artist. As new.

Warhol, Andy – A Collection of Warhol’s Early

Work in Books and Magazines. Comprised of 50

books and 10 magazines. Various formats, sizes

and bindings, each as originally issued. Each item

preserved in new cloth folding box. Various Places:

1951–2004. € 42500,–

A nearly complete collection of Warhol’s work as an

illustrator, and as a designer of dust jackets for trade

publications, as well as covers for magazines. This

aspect of Warhol’s creative output is little known, little

collected, and the material has been largely ignored.

A recent exhibition entitled “Reading Warhol” at the

Brandhorst Museum in Munich brought much of the

forgotten material to the attention of Warhol scholars

and collectors. However, that exhibition covered only

books and ephemera, and did not deal with his magazine

covers.

The majority of our collection documents Warhol’s

early work, beginning shortly after he arrived in New

York from Pittsburgh in 1949. The importance of these

illustrated book and magazine covers is easily understood

when one sees how his later style evolved from

the imagery seen in these early works. The collection

includes 10 magazines for which Warhol designed the

covers, including the celebrated cover for Esquire, all

5 issues of Time magazine, and his covers for Vogue,

Playboy and Opera News.

Lacking only one printed book listed in “Reading

Warhol”, and not including the seven books published

by Warhol himself in the limited handmade editions.

The dust wrappers for the books published in the fifties

and sixties are extremely rare and are now virtually

impossible to find on the market.

Museum Brandhorst, September 18, 2013 – January 12,

2014 (Ostfildern: Hatje Cantz, 2013).

Baselitz, Georg. Winter. By Joseph Brodsky. Illustrated

with 14 coloured aquatint etchings by Georg

Baselitz. With an additional suite of the prints, each

signed and numbered by the artist, 712 × 508 mm.

Folio, book size: 530 × 370 mm, bound in white

paper over boards, a Baselitz woodblock print in

red on front cover, green lettering. Entirely uncut.

San Francisco: Limestone Press, 1992. € 27500,–

Continuing his collaboration with a major author, Baselitz

specially created these 14 full-page coloured aquatints

to compliment Joseph Brodsky’s poem, “Eclogue

IV: Winter”, written by Brodsky in 1977.

The copper plates were prepared by the artist in Derneberg,

Germany and then printed at the Limestone Press

in San Francisco. The large format and layout of the

book grants each full-page etching the physical space

necessary for these commanding images.

Signed on the colophon by Baselitz and Brodsky. This

is one of the 15 lettered copies accompanied by an extra

suite of the 15 prints on large paper, each one signed

and numbered by the artist. There were also 60 regular

copies issued without a suite on large paper. As new.

Lüpertz, Markus. Steelpoints and Poems. Illustrated

with 10 drypoint etchings by Markus Lüpertz,

of which one is inlaid on the cover. Folio, bound in

original half brown morocco in linen slipcase. San

Francisco: Limestone Press, 1989. € 4000,–

Like many modern artists, Lüpertz has always been

interested in expressing himself through poetry as well

as through visual media. In this work, executed at the

time he was working on creating a series of windows

for the cathedral in Nevers, he successfully combines

both. One of 60 copies, signed by Lüpertz. A fine copy.

Förg, Gunther. The Rune. By Ezra Pound. [22] pp.

Illustrated with 5 lithographs. Folio, bound in self

wrappers, preserved in the original cloth folding

box. San Francisco & New York: Hine Editions &

Edition Julie Sylvester, 1991. € 4000,–

Gunther Förg has created a series of five lithographs

to accompany Pound’s poem ‘The Rune’ from the San

Trovaso Notebook. Printed from five lithographic

stones drawn by the artist at the Limestone Press in

November 1990. Housed in the original cloth folding

box, the book is signed by Förg. One of an edition of

40 copies.
